"Ready, Set, Grow!: A What's Happening to My Body? Book for Younger Girls"
Lynda Madaras; Paperback; $9.60
Refer to American Girl series. They have a wonderful book called "My body". My daughter receive it as a gift from my best friend. She really enjoys it.
I Loved "what's happening to my body book for girls." It had all sorts of info to talk about with my parents, plus some I was shy asking my parents about.
Hi N.,
I bought my now 14 year old daughter a book when she was around 10 or 11 and is from the AmericanGirl Library collection. It's called "The Care & Keeping of You-The Body Book for Girls". I think I got it at Barnes & Noble. It has everything in it a girl needs to know about her body and the physical changes that girls go through. It also talks about proper hygiene and care that girls need to know. It's a wonderful book and it helped my daughter alot-she still looks at it every now and then. ~C.
Look for these books on changing bodies & growing up by Robie H. Harris:
"It's So Amazing!"
"It's Perfectly Normal"
yes there is a book you can read with your daughters about their periods and it is christian based the name of the book is the body book it's a god thing by nancy rue it is the lily series i got it at books a million it talks about eating right and about feelings to explain why they feel like crying and get emotional and about how important to take baths ect. there is also another book called the care and keeping of you the body book for girls by americangirl library i also got that one but i like the other book better more christian based. hope this helps you out your friend A. mom of a 13 year old.
My mom gave my sister and me "What's happening to my body" but what I found for my daughters was much easier and less embarrassing for the to read. I gave them the series "God's design for sex series" There are alot of books out there. Go to the CBS website and you can do a topic search, type in puberty because if you type in body changes it may pull up books about spiritual changing. Also if you google christian books it will take you to CBS's website. All the books will pull up for you and you can read the reviews on what other mothers think. Good luck and I commend you on caring about your daughter to think of this to do for her.
It that what "Are you there God, It's me Margaret" by Judy Blume about. I will have to look and refresh my memory. It was not a scientific explanation, but it may help in some ways.
There are books by several different publishers. For instance, if you choose to educate your daughters from a Christian perspective there is a wonderful one about "My Body" that explains all different categories of physical changes, emphasis on self-esteem issues (not bending to peer pressure about physical attributes, etc.) Sorry I can't remember specific titles, but there is info out there. You could look at used book stores or online used sources to get a better price than new.
The Period Book: Everything You Don't Want to Ask (But Need to Know) by Karen & Jennifer Gravelle.
It has been a few years but I bought books for my girls and boys called "What Is Happening to My Body Book for Girls" the other is the same .......... for boys. It explained all kinds of things very clearly in language they could understand. hth
take a look at this site: http://kidshealth.org/teen/
When I was a kid I got the American Girl book All About Me. That was about 18 years ago and it is still around. I just purchased a copy for my daughter who is 8 from Target for about $10. I am going to read it before I give it to her. There are also websites that offer great advise on the subject. Just search menstraul cycle. Since your daughter are still hopefully a little ways away start talking now, it will make it easier. The first conversation I had with my daaughter was all about the proper names for all body parts (breast, valva, etc.) It made her uncomfortable but it opened up the conversation. The second one I had when she walked in the bathroom after I had started my monthly and I just told her that when she was about 12 she would get a period too. I have just had short conversations over time.
American Girl published a great book that my daughter read and it was not intimidating. She was willing to read it with me, sort of, until she hit about 11 or 12. Then she was really private about this stuff.
That's when I found out about Talk Shop, a program directed at middle school aged kids, that gives them a space to learn about this stuff with a professional and in a private group with their peers.
The book I used is called "The Period Book" I can't remember the author, but I do know it was written by a 15 year old girl and her mother. The questions are ones that a teenager can relate to and phrased where they can understand. My daughter is now 19, so I have passed the book on to my sister to share with my nieces.
My mom bought me a book called "Whats happening to me?". I think it was beneficial, because not only did it teach me about the changes I could expect for myself, but it taught me about the changes I would be noticing amongst my peers :).
Good luck!! Why cant they just stay babies for ever :)?
Hi there, I'm a single mom of a very beautiful 11 yr old daughter and she and I sat down when she was 10yrs old and read the book, Girls Guide to Teen by American Medical Association and also, Bath and Body Work has a American Girl book, about young girls and their body, don't quite remember the name of it but it's in the store. Hope this helps

I've seen some American Girl books geared toward girls this age that I like. One was a sort of daybook/diary that I thought looked very good. I saw it in the book section at HEB (of all places) so I'm sure a good bookstore would have it, or similar books.
I had a book as a girl that my mom gave me. I 'think' it was called "What's Happening to my Body". It was very straightforward and helpful. A bit embarassing at the time (I was 8 or 9 and a VERY early bloomer) but helpful. I'm going to look for the book in another year or two, as I suspect my daughter will also be an early bloomer.
Best wishes, and nice to see folks out there taking the initiative to educate their kids about their bodies!
My mother bought me the book called "What's Happening to Me". I bought the same book for my daughter. It is good for both girls and boys. You can choose which parts you want your daughter to know.
The American Girl Library of books have a book titled:
"The Care & Keeping of you"
It is wonderful!
Good Luck!
Just be there for you daughter!
Hi N.,
Go to your local library and get "Are you there God, It's me Margaret", by Judy Blume. It's ancient, but good.
The American Girl series has a book that is excellent.
N. "Period. A girl's guide" is a book I know that explains to girls and it gets into it without getting into sex education. It also comes with a parent guide to help you talk to your kids about it. I know you can buy the book online at a website called www.dotgirlproducts.com
The same website also sell a first period kit that includes a guide and question and answer pamphlet along with a warming pad and samples of protection products. It is all put into this cute little bag. I have a nine year old daughter and she has asked so many questions already so I went looking for something for her to read.
The American Girl Book about bodies is just terrific. I also have 8 & 10 year old daughters - and a 6 year old son too.
I think it's an excellent book. Yes, there are some giggles. And that's okay!
Good luck!
this book is put out by "American Girl" you can get it on their website for 9.95
The Care & Keeping of You - The Body Book for Girls
This “head-to-toe” guide answers all a girl's questions about her changing body, from hair care to healthy eating, bad breath to bras, periods to pimples, and everything in between. Paperback. 104 pages.
the American Girl series has many great books for girls and tween. www.americangirl.com
My best advice is to be honest now as i believe it will help your girls be more free to come to you and know you will be honest and upfront with them, which will keep them from getting misinformed from ill-informed friends.
good luck and best wishes to your girls.
Lots of times there is a little pamplet that comes in a box of tampons that has a lot of great info. You might also check the tampax website to see if they offer information to girls about all the changes that they may experience. I hope that helps. Good luck

The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls (American Girl Library)by Valorie Schaefer.
The Care & Keeping of You-The Body Book for Girls is part of the "American Girl" collection. I bought this book for my 7 year old girls. Even my seven year old son read it. It isn't alarming, focuses on all aspects of self care.
There is a book titled Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, MPH. While it is about natural birth control, pregnancy achievement, etc. it is about the womans body and period. It may be a little advanced for an 8 & 10 yr. old but it is awesome. It may even help you with some stuff. Try googling "Human Sexuality" and see what books come up. I took a class in college and the book was GREAT!! But I can't remember the title. Amazon.com always sells books at a good price. Best of luck to you and your girls-S.
My daughter is 18 now but American Girl makes a wonderful book about puberty in general and is very well done. I think the name is "All about me". I gave this to my daughter at age 8, it was perfect and non alarming. Good luck.
It's called "The Care & Keeping of You-The Body Book for Girls"
My grandma got me this book when I was a preteen. It is good, especially if you want to avoid sex issues til later.
The book that I bought for my daughter when she was that age is called Growing up it's a girl thing by Mavis Jukes. It is a wonderful book for girls ages 8 and up. It was very helpful in our talks about puberty and the body changes. It includes everything. Hope it is helpful to you.
Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom by Dr. Christiana Northrup is excellant!

The book I bought for my daughters is "PERIOD." BY JoAnn Loulan and Bonnie Worthen.
