For All the Car Lovers...

For the first time recently, I'm finding more and more mama's that have a love for cars. More specifically, 'old school' muscle. Do you have a dream car? Do you know how to do some of your own work on a vehicle?

I have a 1979 Firebird with a Big Block Olds 455. I rebuilt the motor this past spring. I cannot wait until I get the body and suspension done!!! I want to fire 'her' up and hear 'her' roar!!! I got the car from a good friend of mine. He kept getting tickets because it didn't move often enough in the front of his house. It was legally registered and plated, but they were being jerks about it. So, he called me up one afternoon and told me to come get the 'damn car'. He knows that I'll let him drive it [if he wants to] when it's done.

My ultimate dream car however is a 1963 Corvette with the 340HP, 327cid small block, 4 speed manual trans, and 4.56 gears. Second to that would be the 1958 Corvette w/the 283cid and 4 speed manual trans. Hell, who am I kidding? I have a love for many cars. The AMC Eagle Wagon 4x4. 60's Beetles. International Scout II. 60's-early 70's Broncos. Early-mid 60's Lincoln Continentals with the 'suicide doors'..... I could go on forever talking about cars and trucks I love. ☺

How about you?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Theresa- I don't have the "Mazda Wannabe" as you call it. It was a special order deal and it won't be here until [earliest] end of December! And I can only get it IF we get profit sharing... BUT they've been laying off, so not even sure I CAN!!! GRRR!
8kidsdad - I know you had to have seen me lingering once in a while... And "mechanicmama" is exactly what I am! : )
For the rest- What's with all the 69's. *giggles* And Mustangs! I like em, but too common for me.
One I forgot to mention is the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T. GIG-GI-DY! Ohhh... And the 1972 Gran Torino......... *drools*

I drove a Firebird when I was in high school. I loved it and wish I still had it.

My dream car is a brand spankin' new white Camaro - they are so beautiful. But so not practical for me. So I am stuck with my little SUV.

I love when an old car pulls up next to you at the light and you hear that deep rumbling of the engine going ludludludludlud. Makes me turn my head the way no Mercedes or Lexus ever will.
I have always wanted a 69 Chevy Camaro. Emerald green with white rally stripes, and white wall tires. What stopped me was not being able to afford a hobby car that isn't my transportation and the gas mileage. So, the new reproductions are really cool to me. I love the way they look like muscle cars, but are actually fairly family friendly.

I love alot of the old body styles, but am partial to Ford. I love me a Mustang. And actually loved when they remade them with a bit of the look of the vintage ones. All the old suspension and steering columns and stuff tho...no way! I gotta have me some creature comforts!

I have this "thing" for the tail lights on a car...they sort of do it for me..weird, I know.

Turbo as well...I gotta have that. We had an 85 Merc Capri (wish I could post pics..I think I have a few on my FB...would have to look?)....with a twin turbo small block. It won a Dyno Shootout at the Car Craft event here in MN at the Fairgrounds...on a hot as h*ll day in the upper 90* temps (never good for the cars). It dyno'ed at 1280 hp. Hubbys motto "Over engineer, under utilize"

Ok, not too exciting, but someone shot this that day...you can hear the turbo wind up, then pssshew.....http://www.youtube.com/user/capricar1

Quickest track time was in the upper 7's (7.86 I think) at 173 in the quarter mile. Its been a few years since we sold it. It just got too spendy for a "race what you had" car that became barely streetable (we raced a street class and it still had full bumpers, wipers, tabs and plates and even t-tops and all of the real glass and heavy stuff). It was fun while we did it tho. I got good at packing the parachute up and my other pit jobs. Now I would rather go snowmobiling in the mountains. Its alot cooler (temp wise!) LOL

Some day hubby will do me a newer body style Mustang, with a big turbo and all the technology he knows how to build and tune (thats his specialty), but with AC and my mp3 player!

I haven't bonded with any specific car yet. Mostly because we don't have the room to do the work needed. If I actually figure out what I want to do then I will go into pouty child mode and make everyone around me miserable. I am not known for my patience.

Some day.....

Is it just me or have cars lost something in the past 20 years. I used to name my cars, I have no desire to name the Honda. :(

I'm not into cars but I LOVE LOVE LOVE my pick up truck. My first one, Shamu, was totalled in a bad weather car wreck a few years ago, but I walked away from the accident w/o a scratch, so I got another truck, Moby Dick. We have currently outgrown Moby, so I am in the market for another truck. I would drive Moby into the ground if I could but its only a cab & 1/2 and we need a full cab now. Hopefully I can find a V8 w/bench seats (you know, so the husband and I have more room to make out).

You can't pay me enough to drive anything else. My husband is begging me to get a minivan but heck no...I'd rather have the balls and brawn of my truck than the comfort and style of a mini-v and the payments of an SUV.

I love the older sports cars too! Since I was 13 I would always say my first car would be a stingray (didn't quite happen that way). I love the 64 1/2 mustangs too. For the most part I've had sporty hatchbacky cars and I would always say that I'd never own a mini-van. Well, guess what, I own a mini-van, LOL.

I had two cars I really loved. I had a 1959 Nash Metropalitan convertible. It was my first car. It was hot pink and white. I got it because the lady that owned it couldn't get it started and parked it on a hill. She would let it coast down hill and pop the clutch to start it. She put it up for sale the day it wouldn't start. I borrowed $125 from my parents to buy it and $25 for a rebuilt starter and installed the starter. That was my introduction to mechanics. I got to where I could do a tune up with a wrench and a dime. A dime to set the gap on the points and screw them down.

The other car I loved was a 1959 Fiat Autobianchini, two tone gray. It had a two cylinder aircooled 498 cc engine, super charged and developed 12.5 hp at 3600 RPMs, and a convertible. The starter lever was on the consol between the two front seats. It had a 5 gallon gas tank and suicide doors. I ran it out of gas a couple of times. Instead of walking to the gas station, I'd push the car. Once I was out of money and out of gas and while pushing the car to the gas station I found three pop bottles. I turned them in for the deposit and bought enough gas to drive home. (Gas was $0.25 a gallon and the pop bottles had a 5 cent deposit.)

My dream car? An old time Rolls Royce Convertible. One of the ones with the large classic Rolls Royce grill.

Thanks for the question. I never expected to see a question like this on mam_pedia.
Good luck to you and yours.

I have a 1979 Super Beetle Convertible (manual of course!). It was my first car and I still have it. I wanted one since I was 3:)

Looking to sell it soon, though. Need the money.

I LOVE and appreciate old cars very much. We go to classic car shows when we have the time.

1966 Cherry Red Mustang... my high school boyfriend restored one while we were dating and I got hooked! Not a huge fan of the early 2000's models, but the 60's models are beautiful!

His father has a 1955 Jaguar in the garage that he restored with his father. Beautiful! We're still close and it was the car I drove in for my high school Homecoming parade and wedding!

1967 Ford Mustang...I love Mustangs! That is also my Dad's favorite car, so I grew up loving them! And I can do some work on my car...tho I like to leave that to my husband! My dad wanted a boy, so I was brought up doing all the things that Dad's teach their sons! My dad and hubby are very happy that I didn't turn out like my mom...very girlie, doesn't do anything but housework inside the house!

I love cars! My new dream car tho is an Audi R8! God I love that car!

You are awesome, I wish I had an ounce of that! I do love old school muscle cars but I don't know near enough about them to spout out names and such. I did change two flat tires 9 months pregnant though while 5 men stood around twiddling their thumbs watching. Suckers.

I'm an insurance agent so I love cars too. Before I was married I bought a new/different car/truck/etc about every year. I loved them all! But ideally I would LOVE a '67 Corvette (my birthyear). I also love ALL Ruby Red Anniversary Edition Corvettes and would love to have any one of them someday. I also love El Caminos. =)

OK, so I have to chime in on the 69's... lol

We have a 69 Camaro RS. OMG, do I love that car. ;) I don't work on it, but my husband sure does... he builds racing engines. :) But I sure do love to cruise in it!

We also have a 1929 Ford Model A. Not as exciting as the Camaro, but cool in it's own way.

Did I mention I LOVE the Camaro? Fun question. :)

I'm not a "car" person per se but am glad to see I've got a lot of company in the "gotta have a manual transmission" club ;-)
(FTR I drive a '97 Honda Civic EX 5-speed sedan, first car DH & I bought after we got married, and it's been acceptably fun to drive for a little economy car and has done an admirable job transporting us and our now-9YO twin DD's. DH laments that the latest iteration of the Civic appears to have lost that "fun to drive" element so we've gotta keep this one running as long as we can LOL)
