Beaumont Troy ??

Hello,
I am on the verge of (finally) deciding my OBGYN..
I heard about this doctor and would LOVE going to her. But the problem is she is affiliated to Beaumont Troy, and not Crittenton, which is the hospital of my choice.
I heard that Beaumont Troy is such a large institution that it 'rushes' deliveries (by inducing labor etc) if they are not within a certain time-frame and are an assembly line for babies. I really want to know if this is true? I would really very much appreciate your opinions and experiences about Beaumont Troy!
Should I keep doctor first or hospital first ?? Which way should I go here?
I am so new new at all this.. so all your experiences are welcome! Please let me know.
Thanks,
K.

Hi K.,
Wonderful questions, and yes you should be thinking about both Dr & place of birth. I teach HypnoBirthing childbirth education and a part of my class takes time to see the importance of this. Yes, Troy is a big institution, and yes you can get lost in it, and yes it can have provide a more 'Active management of labor style' if you let that be. The main thing for you is to get the best Dr. who will uphold your wishes. I have heard of not so great births at Troy B. However, having said that, I have had Moms who have taken my class have great births there......the difference?? I believe is that the Moms who got their desired births their used their VOICE. They educated themselves before giving birth, knew what they wanted and knew how to work with the hosp. staff etc. You can absolutely have the birth you desire with education and preparation before. Hiring a doula can also support the birth process for you. But not everyone who takes my class has a doula. Moms and birthing companions (usually Dad) empower themselves and boost their confidence about birthing. If you haven't chosen a childbirth education course yet (and I mean one other than the 1 hour course at the hosp.) visit my website www.YourPeacefulBirthing.com and see if it appeals to you. Also, I am listed on the Local Business Mama pedia page, Peaceful Birthing.

Also, you may want to interview Dr. Jonathan Cayle, he delivers out of Troy B. and he is a good cross of a strong medical background and letting Moms bodies do what they are supposed to do, provided their is no high risk or special medical circumstance of course. Also, Dr. Daniel Greene out of Crittenton is also a very supportive provider and he loves HypnoBirthing.

Good Luck!! Congrats on your pregnancy,
J.

I delivered both of my boys at beaumont hospital in royal oak. I have never been to the troy location. I had no problems getting appointments and my pregnancy was not rushed. I don't know how you can rush a pregnancy unless you are referring to being forced into a c-section before your due date or induced labor? However, the only frustration that I had was my Dr. not wanting to complete my FMLA paperwork so I could start my leave. It was my second pregnancy and 4 weeks before my due date. It was the month of July. I as huge with swollen ankels and feet plus I was working 9 hour days and was miserable. 2 weeks before my due date my blood pressure was elevated so he completed the FMLA forms.
I guess it was great that I did choose the hospital and not the Dr.'s office because I was admitted at that point because of my blood pressure.

I can't speak for either, as I have only delivered at Royal Oak Beaumont. However, I have never heard of Troy Beaumont "rushing" deliveries. I also have to point out that both Beaumont hospitals offer a wonderful (and free!) service for first-time mothers called The Parenting Program. This provides family and breastfeeding support after delivery, as well as the option of a playgroup for your and your baby to join, in which all of the babies are about the same age with moms (and dads, for evening groups) who live in the same general area. This was truly invaluable to me. I don't know if Crittenton offers such a service. Something else to consider.

I delivered my 2nd child at Troy Beaumont (about 7 months ago) and had a wonderful experience. I was not rushed what so ever. If when labor was not progressing they did not "rush" me or induce labor at all. The nurses there were fabulous and wonderful. Troy Beaumont is not as large as Royal Oak Beaumont (where I delivered my first....Royal Oak is the teaching hospital and much larger and much more crazy). My delivery at Troy was very calm, and low key. I would definitely choose doctor over hospital, because the doctor is going to be the one delivering the child and respecting your wishes.

I would definitely choose doctor over hospital. Your doctor is the one that will be honoring your wishes for the type of delivery you would like. I delivered both of my babies at Troy Beaumont and had great experiences both times. I thought everyone was great and I never felt rushed. The nurses in delivery were wonderful, and I always knew that my doctor would make the right call because she was so great and I really trusted her. I have also had several friend deliver there as well, and they all had great experiences. I honestly believe that having a good doctor that you trust is the most important.

I delivered in Troy Beaumont and would STRONGLY recommend them! The staff was very experienced, diligent and caring (which went very well for me, as even though I was a scheduled c-section, it was my first baby and he ended up in special care due to the diligence of one of the delivering nurses noticing he had a heart murmur). Also, as a first time mom learning how to breast feed - they were very helpful and attentive to assisting this process to be a success - which also had some challenges being my son was in the special care unit for the first 24/36 hours.

I have nothing but good to say for the hospital and staff.

My doctor works out of both Providence and Beaumont so I was able to deliver at Providence. Both my aunt and Sisterinlaw had bad experiences at Beaumont so I knew I didn't want to deliver there. (I loved Providnce for both my deliveries and one was a difficult one). I had to take my second son to Beaumont when he was five days old for jaundice. They screwed up his arrival time and put him at greater risk for complications. Then I had two residents that were really rude to me while we were there. They both left me in tears and confused. The head resident had to come and talk to me because the one doctor was so rude, I requsted to not interact with her further. I shared a room with a couple that also had tons of problems with their residents. So the point of my long story is that you may lve your attending but that doctor will probably only interact with you for a short time, and the majority of the time you will have to deal with residents. Beaumont has a " doctor god" culture that is not patient friendly. They also have major communication issues there. I would not rccommend it. Best of luck to you and your future family. A

K.:

I had my child at Beaumont Troy and it was a wonderfull experience. What you have heard is what happens at Beaumont Royal Oak. Troy is much smaller and more intimate. The labor and delivery nurses are awesome. I have several friends who all have delivered all their babies at Troy and all have had awesome experiences. You should go and visit. You will see the imitmacy of it and how small it is compared to Royal Oak.
Good luck!

Hi K.,

I delivered my first baby at Beaumont Troy last May and was very pleased with the care I received. Troy is not a teaching hospital (like Royal Oak) so there are not a hundred people crowding your room any given moment, and no students administer treatment. They have 2 delivery rooms dedicated to women desiring natural births without medication. These rooms have tubs and other equipment to help avoid medication. I had compassionate and patient nurse midwives take care of me. I never felt rushed at any time. I believe Troy's c-section rate is quite a bit lower than other area hospitals. I would not hesitate to deliver my next bundle of joy at that location.

Wow! I'll give you an honest answer, go to Beaumont Troy!

I delivered both of my children their and the nurses, doctors, staff, etc. were excellent both times. My daughter is three weeks old today and I had to have an emergency c-section. When I arrived to B-T my water broke but I had a lot of blood; the check in lady was trying to get me up stairs as fast as she could. The triage nurse was very calm the whole time I was with her; she would tell me what was going on at all times and was on the phone with my doctor constantly. It turned out I had an abruption to my placenta and the safest and best way was to have a c-section. Within two hours of arrival, my daughter was born, happy and healthy. The staff moved so fast, so professional, I couldn't have asked for anything better. I never felt like I was being pushed out of the hospital at all; they were more concerned about my pain level and if my husband got something to eat. The food was decent, but i couldn't have asked for better care.

I've heard that Beaumont Royal Oak is more of the "rush" hospital.

Good Luck! Also, if you need a good doctor, let me know! The staff at Beaumont Troy know him very well and respect him. Super good bedside manor.

Hi K. - The most important thing is that you like and trust your doctor. "Hospitals" (whether they are small or large) do not make management decisions about your labor and delivery, individuals do, i.e. your personal physician will decide if and when you need to be induced or even have a cesarean section. You can discuss her philosophy on these issues with her even before you get pregnant. Remember you are also going to be relying on her for your gynecological care, so this decision extends beyond what will happen in a future delivery. Good luck.
