“Healthy-Hearted” Mom
By Kristie of West Roxbury
A year ago, just before my 31st birthday, my doctor told me my blood pressure was very high, as were my cholesterol levels. Both run in my family, and I was worried I would be on medication for the rest of my life. I asked what else I could do, and the doctor said diet and exercise. She wanted me to lose 10% of my weight.

On my 31st birthday, I made the decision to see a Registered Dietitian and get my health back. I have 2 little girls, and want to be a good influence on them. The Dietician changed my life. I learned how to eat right, control my portions and incorporate exercise. After 10 months my blood pressure has significantly decreased, I have lost 15% of my weight, and dropped down 4 pant sizes. I have never felt better!!

“Y” Not Be a Loser?
By Angie of Sacramento
At age 29, weighing 420 lbs., I decided to take control of my life and looked into getting the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. I was tired after spending most of my life overweight, and having tried and failed every diet known. The decision to have surgery was not an easy one. The process was tedious. It took four years before I was approved by my healthcare company. During that time, I endured a strict weight loss regiment, embarrassing medical procedures and psychiatric evaluations.

Here I am almost four years later… and 210 lbs lighter. The weight loss after the surgery was easy; I just did exactly what the doctor’s told me to do. I did not waiver. I was determined to be a success. I now see life in a different light, and am very proud of where I am today.

All the Numbers Are Going Down
By Erika of Centennial
I have always struggled with weight issues ever since I can remember. I am now in my late 30’s with 2 small children. I am also on heart and cholesterol medication, medications 30-something year-olds should NOT be on.

In December I knew I needed to do something. My weight had continued to go up and I was becoming more unhealthy by the day. I looked into the P.I.N.K. (Power, Intensity, Nutrition, Kardio) Method after seeing it on “The Doctors.” I had my kit by December 20, and decided to start on December 25 – yes, on Christmas and knowing New Year’s was right around the corner. I made a promise to myself: I WILL do this.

In the 8 + weeks I have been on this lifestyle change, I am down 20 lbs. and almost 2 pant sizes. The best part is that when I went to my specialist for a cholesterol check, my number was at 120, I was above 200 in the summer of 2011. She was able to cut my meds in half, and if the number is the same this summer, I will be able to get off my cholesterol meds completely!!! I have found some great friends in the P.I.N.K. support groups on Facebook who have been so supportive during my journey.

They Were Not My Lucky Numbers
By Tywane of Avondale Estates
A year and a half ago I stepped on a scale at a truck stop. You know, the ones that say get your weight and your lucky numbers? When 325 scrolled across the screen, I knew that must be my lucky number. Well, it was not…it was my weight, and that number did not seem lucky to me. On the rest of the drive home, I tried to convince myself that when the mirror says ‘objects appear larger,” it was talking about my weight. I knew I had to do something.

When I got home, I began to watch my food intake and portion size, began walking, started taking Zumba classes, and now I even run 2-3 times a week. I have lost 111 pounds to date! I have gone from wearing a 24-26 to a size 12-14. I can now cross my legs and sit in chairs that have arms. My children can wrap their arms around my waist, and my husband can lift me up. I recently flew to visit my parents, and I did not have to ask for a seat belt extender. I know some of these things seem normal to others, but they were not for me. I am still amazed at the “normal” things I can do now, like fit in a booth at a restaurant. So as I continue my journey to a healthy me, I can say 325 may just have been my lucky number after all!!

Love Being a Loser!
By Erica of Adams Center
Frustrated by my weight after two babies, I decided to get the Lap Band in January of 2011. After completing the pre-surgery requirements, I was finally banded in July of 2011. I have lost sixty pounds, and am loving life! I run daily, and am ready to participate in another 5k next weekend. I was so happy to see my children picking up on my healthy habits on a recent trip to Disney: the kids picked water or milk over soda with every meal. I love being a loser!
