I'm a Better Mom on Coffee

A letter to my girls:

Dear Girlies,

I’m just going to say it: You guys wear me out. That said, I’ve discovered the wonders of caffeine in recent weeks. I lived 34 years without drinking coffee, but one day, around 4 o’clock—my usual low-point—I had the not-so-novel idea that some caffeine may help me get through the hours before dinner. After only one cup, I thought, “This stuff is legal?!” I realized, since drinking the stuff, that I am probably a better mom on coffee. That is to say, when I have energy. Thus began my reflection on how I hope you might one day look back on our days together when you were little.

I hope you remember that we went for lots of hikes in the Valley so you could smell the fresh air and get in touch with nature, and not just the times I hoped you’d watch “Olivia” a little longer so I could sit still for a minute.

I hope you remember home-cooked meals and lots of fresh veggies and fruits, and not just the times I served chicken nuggets again because I was too exhausted to think about dinner.

I hope you remember that I talked to you patiently and calmly when you were having a rough day, and not just the times I said something like, “Because I said so.” Ugh.

I hope you remember that I listened to you and engaged in conversations with you, and not just the times I absentmindedly responded, “Mm-hmm” to something you were trying to tell me.

I hope you remember that I answered most of your questions thoughtfully, and not just the times I stopped responding because I was too tired to think of one more answer.

I hope you remember that I let you get messy in the sandbox, the flowerbeds, and in mud puddles, and not just the times I said, “Not today,” because I didn’t want to clean up the mess.

I hope you remember that I sat on the floor with you for lots of hours of reading and playing, and not just the times I asked you to entertain yourself so I could fold laundry or empty the dishwasher because I didn’t want to be doing those tasks at 10 o’clock.

I hope you remember that we ran through the sprinkler, played in the snow, and jumped in the leaves, and not just the times I said, “We don’t have time.”

I hope you remember that we spent hours reading together, making crafts, coloring, baking, imagining, exploring, and just being goofy. Mostly, I hope you remember me loving every minute of it. With or without coffee.

Love, Mama

Thanks, I use coffee often to keep on trudging through the day when I am on empty. Coffee helps! I can certainly relate to this article as well being a Mom and a full time day care provider.
God Bless.

Wow!That cup of coffee looks fantastic! I love your inspiring words too.lol.

My day is not complete without coffee and my life is not complete without my children.

I'm tearing up reading this at work. What a wonderful note for your kids. I couldn't agree more!

I agree with NotJustAnotherJennifer (which is funny since I am also a Jennifer).

I'm not only tearing up reading this, but I'm full on sobbing. I need to print this out as a constant reminder of what is important.

I also went about the same number of years without discovering coffee. Then one day when I my husband was away for work and I was trying to care for two young girls and maintain a big house and big yard, I felt like I needed something to help get me through my day. Like you, I was completely buzzed on my first cup of coffee and felt like I was Wonder Woman. I had so much energy and accomplished so much...

I really wish that coffee would give me that little pick-up. I don't drink it, but I've tried it (and espresso, and pop, and vivarin...) and I feel nothing.

I'd love to have the energy for even one of those activities.

What lucky girls to have a mom like you!

I have chronic pain, so it's kind of like walking through mud everyday. And it's absolutely true with me -- the difference in my parenting when I'm feeling "better" is like night and day ("Sure we can get out the paint and make a giant mural in the living room -- why not?" vs. "What do you mean you need a pen?"). But I think I'd lose my mind without, as my husband calls it, "the nectar of the gods" in the morning. It's that small pleasure that makes waking up tolerable...

unfortunately for me coffee really doesn't do much..i work out a lot..and i love this drink called Pump N.O...1/2 a bottle of that and whamo...i buy them at the Vitamin Store on Lake in Pasadena..that will put a little zip in your step :)

Very sweet. You are a great mom!

That was beautifully written. It is what we all know is important and strive for everyday. Trying to complete our chores before the kids get home to give them as much attention as they need. Sometimes with three boys I need a lot of coffee to get me through the day and sometimes just a little. I am a much happier, energic mom on coffee especially if i get a cup in before they are up in the morning. Like now!

Like any drug the first time you use it you will feel great, but over time this stimulant will cause a negative effect on your life and mood. I avoid all caffeinated beverages. They don't give your body what it really needs, like rest, exercise and good nutrition. It's like whipping a horse. Yes, the horse will continue to move, but it is not provided with what it really needs and in the long run might do harm. I admire your desire to be active with your children...

enoyed the read....very nice!!!!!!1

I just got done telling my kids that coffe makes me a nicer mom.... As we once again went thru the drive through at Caribou Coffee!

Such a pleasure to read this when I woke up this morning (while drinking my coffee waiting for my 5 year old to get out of bed!). Such truth. I often think many of these things on a daily basis. Have a great week:)
