Strange Problem with 8 Year Old

this is odd and embarrassing to me but I have an 8 year old son who somewhat recently starting pooping his pants. I say somewhat recently because I realized something was wrong some time ago but I thought he just didnt wipe well after using the bathroom and kept on him about that but lately its gotten worse and after speaking with him he claims he doesnt know when he has to go and basically he goes in his pants.
