Sensory Issues & Music Class

HI, our 6 year old son has an IEP and various accommodations at school. He has some learning issues and behavioral issue--we've requested a behavioral assessment. He struggles with overstimulation and impulsivity--He also struggles with anxiety. Here's my question--How would you handle the following? My son goes to art and music on Wednesdays, which is different than the other days of the week. He really struggles in music class. He gets in trouble quite a bit in that class because it's hard for him to focus for an hour without moving,...

Affording Dance Lessons for My Daughter

A friend of mine has a daughter who takes dance lessons twice a week. She asked me if my daughter (8) would like to join a class with her daughter. The girls have known each other since preschool. They haven't really bonded, I think because my daughter is very introverted. But the mom and I are friends, so I have just accepted that. Anyway, I thought tap dancing or jazz might help my daughter come out of her shell and would be a fun way to exercise. We went to one free Contemporary dance class. I wasn't impressed. Guitar or Piano Lesson?

I have a 7 year old boy who wants to take some kind of music lessons. He really wants to take guitar lessons but I am concerned about the blisters that you get from playing. I am afraid he may get discouraged and not want to have any more lessons if it hurts his fingers. He is also willing to take piano. So, I thought piano now and guitar later, when he would be a little older and better able to deal with the sore fingers. Any thoughts or ideas or experience on this subject? Also, I need to find a good music teacher! I am near Cedar Park...

Piano Lesson Battle with 7 Year Old

My daughter just turned 7 and has been taking piano for about 9 months. She has been doing amazingly well, learning much faster than I ever remember learning at her age. She is a very auditory learner, so she can pick up a song after hearing it only once. This is great, but it means she NEVER looks at the page. Whenever she has to do any kind of practice or exercise reading the page, she HATES it. We are literally in tears after each practice. I say we, because since she can't read the notes, I have to sit with her. Recently I had...
