I teach **childbirth education classes** that pull from many great resources such as Dr. Robert Bradley, the Lamaze Institute for Normal Birth, author Sheila Kitzinger and midwife Ina May Gaskin. We focus on breathing techniques and many different comfort techniques that I have learned from my experience attending births as a doula, both in the hospital setting and the home setting. GROUP classes are offered mostly in the evenings 6:30pm-9pm on the north side of Colorado Springs. The next GROUP class starts on THUR 7/9/09. Classes include multi-dimensional instruction, a ten chapter student notebook, and unlimited phone / email support. PRIVATE and ACCELERATED classes are also available. For a class outline, please feel free to visit my website at www.westsidebirthconnection.com .
I also provide **doula services** for your labor, birth and postpartum period. This unique service includes 2-3 prenatal visits, attendance at your birth, and 1-2 postpartum visits. For a combination of both childbirth education and doula services there is a discount of $100. I also give discounts for active military families and those on public assistance, such as Medicaid, food stamps, etc. Doula services will also include:
-A discussion of your preferences for labor support, pain control and interventions.
-I will assist you in researching and writing a birth plan.
-Hand-outs covering labor and birth positions, breastfeeding information, and postpartum care for mom and baby
-Professional referrals and resources will be available to you at any time.
-Access to my lending library (books, videos, tapes).
-Emotional, physical and informational support during labor, birth and postpartum.
-Use of my labor support tools such as hot/cold rice packs, birth ball, aromatherapy oils, massage oils, music, my caring hands, my reassuring voice.
-Help initiating breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth.
I believe that KNOWLEDGE and SUPPORT are the keys to a positive birth! I acknowledge that each labor and birth is an unique experience and there is no ONE right way to have a baby. My background includes my love for natural medicine, a B.A. in Biology, a Childbirth Education Certification through the Birth Connection, Labor / Birth Doula Certification through CAPPA, Neonatal Resuscitation Certificate through NRP, CPR & First Aid Certified, and my experience working with Dr. Robert Wolfson, a perinatolotgist. I currently shadow a homebirth midwife, as her assistant, and I am looking forward to becoming a midwife myself someday, when my own two children are older.
The childbirth education classes from the Westside Birth Connection were so much better than anything we could have experienced from the hospital sponsored classes. Candace helped us to learn all of the benefits, risks, and alternatives to every medical intervention during the birth process. Once we had all of this information, we were able to plan our son's birth according to our preferences.
We also used Candace as our doula. She was wonderful! She was always available for phone consultations on the days leading up to our son's birth. Then at the birth, she radiated peace and calmness. She helped me to focus and relax during the difficult transition period rather than panic. She helped to meet all of my physical needs (drinks, compresses, warm blankets, etc) so that my husband could stay by my side for the entire birth. She stayed after the birth to help me with breastfeeding. And she called and stopped by our house to check on us after we were home from the hospital.
Candace truly loves being a childbirth educator and a doula, and she gives 100% of herself to help you achieve the kind of birth experience that you desire.
Candace was our doula for the birth of our first and only child (so far). My husband and I had already taken childbirth preparation classes through Memorial by the time we discovered Candace, but we wish we had taken her classes so as to be better and more realistically prepared. She was an amazing person to help us, has a very calm and reassuring demeanor, and stayed with us - present and alert - through our entire 45 hour labor. She handled all the weird scenarios that came to us with thoughtfulness and candor. (such as doctors suddenly thinking maybe my water didn't break after nearly a full day of labor with not much dilation - despite what we told them and all the tests the nurses had done to confirm that my water had broken, and one awful nurse). I didn't feel judged when I decided to go ahead with an epidural even though I was disappointed myself. Candace was hands on, held me in position for pushing since I could not move my legs, and provided every kind of support she could to get us through that lengthy ordeal. My husband and I could not have done it without her and I credit Candace with fostering our ability to deliver a healthy baby girl without a C-Section. A++++ for Westside Birth Connection
I had never even heard of a doula when I became pregnant. I met Candace at my Bradley class and quickly became aware that a doula could be just the extra thing I needed to give me the confidence in having a natural child birth. I labored at home as long as possible and Candace helped in so many amazing ways! She was in the background letting my husband coach me through each contraction, but she jumped in when she was needed and spoke to me in a very soothing voice encouraging me each step of the way. Not to mention, she knows this amazing hip squeeze thing that really took the edge off when I was having a contraction. When I got to the hospital I was dilated to 9! I can happily say that I had the exact childbirth I wanted and I know Westside Birth Connection had a big part in it. I would recommend a doula to any pregnant family!
Candace was my birth doula for my 3rd pregnancy and what an amazing experience it was. She was able to give me more comfort than I received in previous medicated births, as well as a number of resources, new information, and unlimited support.
Candace brings her bubbly personality, compassion, wisdom, and strength and is adored by every client, or provider I have talked to. I feel that with Candace's experience, wisdom, and professionalism I was able to have the perfect birth. If only every woman could be blessed enough to have the support of someone like her.
Candace is a wonderful doula! I highly, highly recommend her. I could not have gone through natural childbirth without her support. Her presence is so calming and supportive.
I had a fantastic experience with Candace as my labor doula. She was very informative and caring as we got to know each other before the birth and she was a great grounding influence during the birth of my first son. I felt confident in her ability to answer my question in an unbiased manner and simply add her energy and positive presence to my birthing place.
My husband was uncertain about hiring a doula because he is very attentive and felt a doula might make him less significant. He has ever since told everyone he can about how wonderful it was to have Candace at our birth because she gave him the space and confidence he needed to know he was doing everything right and she gave him the ability to take bathroom breaks, eat, and breath every now and then without leaving me alone. Candace made sure my husband had food and water too, so he didn't even have to think about his own needs.
I was so positively affected by my doula experience, that afterwards I chose to become a doula myself and ask Candace to be my mentor. I have never regretted hiring Candace or befriending her. My birth experience changed my life in so many wonderful ways, many of which are from choosing to surround myself with informative, positive support people like Candace McCollett.
My husband and I made the best decision asking Candace to be our Doula. My husband travels a lot and making sure we had someone there in case he was traveling was important. Candace was very knowledgeable and helpfull when it came to making decisions for our birth plan. She helped us every step of the way. When it came to our big day Candace made sure everyone had a copy of the birth plan and helped to keep me centered and calm. Most importantly she played an active role during labor and delivery. Whenever a decision was to be made she was there to help us understand our options. I don't know what we would have done without her. She was amazing. I dont know why anyone would go without a phenominal doula like Candace.
