I was watching tv today and I turned to a chanel that said your baby can read I was thinking about buying it. Before I bought it I wanted to know if their was anyone who has bought it and was it worth the price. I have a 5 month old girl and a 5 yr old son that I was thinking about getting it for them. My son is learning to read in school but is having a hard time with learning his ABC's and Learning words to. Growing up I had and still do have this problem and I don't want my kids going throught it like I did and still do. I know it takes alot of work and time I just wanted to see if it had really helped little ones learn to read.

What can I do next?

I have the big package. We have three girls: 6,4, & 2 years old. My six year old reads already and my four year just began. This series is definately great for my two year old. (Which will be perfect for your 5 month old. Your five year old will definately learn something, so it won't be a waste...just more exposure to reading). My daughter asks me to but her "bideo on" everyday. She grabs the flash cards and books 2, sometimes 3 times, per day. We have been on the program for 1 1/2 months and she's learned all the animals, colors, and many of the words. She tends, however, to get distracted at times when the videos are on. I find that if I sit with her to watch them, she's more inclined to watch. The first is her favorite (I believe because it was her first exposure, she's attached). You must show each video for one month and her transition to the 2nd video is a challenge. If I would have know about this program earlier, I would have purchased it. I do believe in "phonetic" teaching, and this is a mixture of both at the end of the day. BUY IT (I wish I could get a referral fee!!!)

As far as the comment from the other Mom about your spelling and mistakes...it happens! You probably only had "so much time" to type before the 5 month old and the 5 year old pulled at you for attention. The content of your question is most important! You will waste your money if you don't use the program, but you'll be estatic if you do use it! There are all sorts of wonderful ways out there to teach our kids, and this program is another "interactive" program with parent and child. Definately consider all offers and make your decision.

rBottomline: this program will be BEST for your 5 month old, and advantageous for your 5 year old. If you break down the cost between both children, it may be worth it. You can also keep the program for any future children you may have, sell it to someone having a baby, or gift it when you are done.

Your 5 yr. old son should be learning to read in kindergarten. In addition to reading, he will learn to add and spell simple words.

Hi, J. - My advice is don't buy that book because it's not the thing your children really need. Instead, walk with your children to the library and pick out five picture books and children's story books, and make the library visit a weekly event. AND, every night at bedtime, curl up with your children and read them one of the books. Start with simple books that have lots of pictures and not much writing. Your children will love the close time, they will love the attention from you, and they will grow up loving to read because of this special time they enjoyed with their mommy. I just did a search on Amazon.com for children's books and found 'The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury: Picture Books and Stories to Read Aloud'. It is very highly rated by parents of all ages and is loaded with children's stories. The list price is high but if you look in the 'used and new' section you'll find it available for around $10, including shipping. That would be a great start to a library for you and your children! Very soon, the 5 yr old will start bringing books home from school and you can help him read them, and enjoy having him read them to you and his sister. God bless you and your little family!

Hi J.-

I have never heard of this before, but a quick search on Amazon showed that it is getting mostly positive reviews. If you have the time to watch a DVD twice a day (on the way to and from school, maybe?) and if you have $60 to burn, then it might be worth a shot. OR you could consider some other reading system. I've been looking at the Leapster TAG and it has also had some very positive reviews. Even better- it is interactive, so the child controls it, and it looks like a toy, so they'll be excited to get it for Xmas.

Whatever you decide, don't forget to read to him yourself. And make sure he has plenty of books to choose from.

I have a tape of theirs and found it a little creepy. You sit your kid in front of the tv while they put flash cards up in front of them over and over and over. Okay, I know there really is more to it than that... but that what it seemed like to me. I could do that myself. AND the amount of time to sit them in front of it and watch it is not going to be healthy for them. Just wait until they get a little older and then let them watch the Leap movies (all about letters) when they can enjoy it and actually process the info. The video is not going to get your child ahead. Studies have shown that those who start reading earlier blend back in with other students by the third grade. And those who don't would have been ahead anyway.... so my opinion- just wait. The 5 year old would do well with the leap movies and some books that you two can work on together. I bought the Dick and Jane books for my kids because the repetition in there is great for learning the words and both the 5 and 4 year old are doing great from those things alone! Good luck!

I've never tried this program, but I checked out the website. It looks like it is just teaching children to memorize words rather than truly learning to read. I would encourage you to reconsider pushing your children to learn to read. There are so many other things that young children need to be learning. If there time is spent learning to read when it is not age appropriate they may miss out on learning in other areas and actually end up behind. Research shows that children DO NOT do better in school just because they memorize a bunch of words at an early age. Instead spend your time instilling a love of reading in your children by reading to them. That is so much more important and a much better way to spend your time.
