Yep. Felt something on the back of my leg at the kitchen sink 2 weeks ago and brushed at it (felt like one my hairs and it was annoying me--I have long hair, so I have hair all over me at any given time, lol). Anyway.. I brushed at it expecting to come away with a long strand of hair that had gotten caught on my clothing and was touching me periodically as I moved-- nope. I looked and found a tick on the floor trying to crawl away to hide under the rug. (tile floors)
The next day, my son found one crawling on the floor in his bedroom.
We live in a very woodsy area... and we have a dog. So they do sometimes hitch rides inside on her and fall off and eventually climb on someone if we don't find them first. It's just that time of year, it WAS a mild winter, and the area we live in. I just saw an article in the newspaper this week that there are something like 43 different types of ticks that live in our state. Fun! :-/
I usually put them in a ziploc baggie for a week or so, (if they were on one of us or attached to the dog) in case symptoms develop. So that the actual tick could be tested if need be. They do carry diseases. But they spread them by (sorry if it's TMI) regurgitating their stomach contents after they have embedded their head/mouth parts. So squeezing them with tweezers to pull them out can cause them to spread their diseases--whatever they might be carrying. And they might not be carrying anything. It depends on if they have fed on other animals that were carrying something already.
They can live years without a blood meal. Sooo.....
Frontline Plus is what we keep on our dog. Usually, I only find dead ticks. Where they got on her, started feeding (start ballooning up) and then the frontline got them and they drop off on the floor somewhere.
