Hi Moms,

My son has has a yeast rash for about a month and a half. We have tried the oral antibiotics, the anti-fungal cream and other basic remedies but nothing seems to help. I am sure it is yeast by the way it responds to sugar etc... The rash is all around his groin area and is starting to spread up his back. I am at my wits end.

Does anyone have any suggestions of treatments that have worked for you. Also, how long did it take for them to work, am I being too impatient, I know these types of rashes can take some time to clear.

Thanks in advance for all the great mama advice.

What can I do next?

Go back to the doctor. It could be an allergic reaction to either something he's ate or a soap... either body or laundry soap. It could be eczema as well.

My daughters had some issues with yeast rashes and the only thing that ever worked for them was prescription Nystatin cream from the pediatrician.

We use good old fashioned Monistat, but then put Desitin over the top of it. Otherwise, he just pee's it off. We make sure to put cream on him with every diaper change.

If that's not working, I would definitely get to the pediatrician to see if it's something else.

Try soaking him in a bath with some apple cider vinegar. You also need to get him on a good probiotic. Pharmax has a good one for kids. Antibiotics cause yeast infections. I would also take him to see a naturopath doctor for other ideas. Good luck.

Antiobiotics can cause yeast infections so that could be one of the causes of it.

Have you switched detergents or soaps? If not, you may want to to ensure it's not that.

Cut out dairy for a few days to see if that makes a difference.

Put diaper cream on the areas you can to minimize the discomfort/pain.

Antibiotics make yeast rash worse by killing off all bacteria and everything else the body uses to defend itself. Yeast is not affected by antibiotic.
When you bathe your son put a half a cup of vinegar in his bath water. Use
a cup of vinegar in the rinse water when you wash his clothes.
Take him off all sugar. It takes about three to four weeks for the vinegar to become effective.
The alternative is to take him to a homeopath. Yeast is an imbalance in the system.

go back to the doctor. the creams should work and antibiotics aren't necessarily a good idea if it is yeast.

also consider a good probiotic

You have to keep the cream on them at least four times a day and make sure that even when it looks cleared up, keep it on for a few more days.
A little girl that I used to babysit looked like she had the same thing, but after 2 months of it, I urged her mother to take her to the doctor. Turns out it had turned into a staph infection. You might call your pedi to make sure it isn't something worse.

My daughter had a few bouts with yeast infections when she went through a phase of hating to bathe. Don't know if there was a connection but since I've gotten her to sit in a tub more regularly again we haven't had a problem. Anyway - I first tried putting vinegar rinse, yogurt, probiotic paste on the rash with lots of diaper free time... but what ended up working for us when that alone didn't was Monistat cream applied with every diaper change and regular diaper creme over it. Plus giving her probiotics orally, usually added to baby yogurt. And as much diaper free time as possible. I also had the suggestion of Gentian Violet but had a hard time finding it. Call around to pharmacies to see who has it before you go looking.

Have you had a culture done of the rash? It doesn't sound like yeast if it is on drier areas such as his back.

Is he still in diapers at all and what brand are you using?

I think you should take him to a dermatologist for a second opinion.

My baby had a bad rash recently. We used equal parts of Desitin, Lotrimin AF (anti-fungal) and Cortaid (anti-itching). You can mix it on a piece of paper or on your own fingers. It started getting better after 2 days, and a week later it was almost gone. But we gave him lots of diaper-free time, changed diaper brands and made sure his bottom was dry with each change. Even using a hair-dryer (cool air) to dry it.

Best cure of all is to keep it dry and give fresh air time. He may be allergic to something as well, so you need to find that out too. Good luck! I know what that's like!

Oh, and don't put cornstarch on it. If that's a yeast infection, it would make it worse.

My daughter had thrush when she was around two years old and then a rash around her vaginal area, a week or so later that would not go away. Read online on the Dr. Sears website about probiotics and it's effectiveness in curing yeast. I also saw the doctor and he said I could try the probiotic first and then if it didn't work, come back for the real medicine. He did say, however, that the probiotic usually does work. So, I bought culturelle, you can find this at target or rite aid. It's around $18 for a box of 30,I think. I broke open the capsule and mixed the powder in her food once a day. I also took a capsule, as I was breastfeeding. It worked!!! Her yeast infection was gone after 3 or 4 days, if I remember correctly. Since you have already done antibiotics, it's a good idea to give your child probiotics at this time to make up for he good bacteria that has been killed.
off, anyways. I remember her yeast infection, or rash, around her vaginal area was not the normal looking diaper rash. Her bumps were raised, with a peak, and no cream would work. You can also make a paste from the probiotic and apply it directly to the area. Good luck!!!

Poor thing! He sounds miserable.

Antibiotics for Yeast Infection? Fire your doctor. Antibiotics CAUSE yeast - they DO NOT HEAL IT!

If I were you first, I would find a good Naturopath. They can find out if a food allergy is causing the yeast problems. Food allergies can also cause the yeast, as easily as sugar can. By the way, excema is usually caused by food allergies as well.

Also, cut out ALL sugar, and all high-glycemic foods (including white wheat, cut out dairy too if you can) and find a powerful probiotic. The ones I recommend (EOS by NOW and Dr. Ohira's Probiotics) are a little hard for children to get down - you can mix it into his food or drink - but he needs a powerful probiotic.

I also discovered, that when you feed a child fermented things (such as salad made with natural vinegar) sauerkraut, pickles, olives - this ups the good bacteria as well!

My son has eczema that looks like a yeast infection. Cortisone ointment does the trick as does cleaning and drying his creases in the morning (after a night time diaper). When it's really bad it will take about five days for the ointment to clear it up, if we're diligent about cleaning and drying every morning we can prevent relapses or only need to use a very little bit of cream when he starts to look red.

If your son is still in diapers or pull-ups all day then some diaper free time is definitely recommended regardless of if the infection is yeast or an allergic reaction. Probiotics are also good; you can give a child this age Activia yogurt or lactobacillus.

As pointed out by others though, any time that a rash lingers for a month it is time to get the doctor to look at it again, especially if what you're doing is not making it better.

I am very familiar with yeast as I have had it almost all my life. I am 60 years old. You need to have a balance of good bacteria and the best way is to get a really good probiotic. One that releases the good buggies in the colon. These good buggies are very fragile and eating them (like in yogurt) or taking RX they have to go through the stomach (acid) and most get killed. Shaklee has one that is guaranteed to go to the colon and get released there. It is triple encapsulated so it does get to the colon. Also the little kids products have the optiflora in them. Go to http://nutritionproducts.myshaklee.com to view about Optiflora and/or the baby - kid food supplements. The optiflora comes in a little pearl and little kids can usually take it with applesauce or peanut butter.

The other thing is that I have always had a hard time getting rid of the yeast especially if I eat sugar or an imbalance in my diet. Dr. Sandra Bevacqua has learned that almost 99% of her patients have heavy metal toxicity along with the yeast and if you get rid of the heavy metal toxicity (lead, aluminum, mercury, etc.) then the yeast can be treated and it will eventually get better and your son should not get yeast infections any more. I, myself, am extremely high in lead and aluminum and this heavy metal toxicity is probably why I have had such a hard time getting rid of the yeast infection. This heavy metal toxicity can be chelated out. There are chelation suppositories as well as capsules or tablets. Dr. Sandra has just recently learned about the toxicity levels - about a year or so ago - and passed it on to us.

The best thing you can do if you can get pills down him (they may need to be crushed into applesauce) but do a Urine Toxic Test to determine if your son as any toxic metals in him system. The cost is less than $100 - or at least that is what I pay.

Someone did a test on new born babies (just out of the womb) and found out they had toxins in their bodies from their moms, the environment, etc.

I wish you well, if you need any further information or would like an excellent doctor to help you please let me know.

See Dr. Palmeri at portlandfamilyhomeopathy.com, she took care of our son's rash & it didn't come back. It may not be a yeast rash so the antibiotics may not work. good luck.

Slather it with plain yogurt every night til it's gone. The cold of the yogurt will sooth the itch and the yogurt will get the yeast. If you mix it with diaper rash creme it works even better..keeps it from soaking completely into the skin and cures the rash faster I've found. My daughter suffered from these for quite awhile because of antibiotics I had to take when she was born. I think after a week of the yogurt and rash creme she was fine. Then we got it when it started after that so treatment didn't take long.)

My son had a rash that went on for a couple of months and every time I took him to the dr. they would give me a cream and tell me it would go away with time. After the third time of receiving the same medicine and advice I asked around and was told about gentian (sp?) violet. A friend gave me some and although you have to be careful as it will dye anything it gets on purple. It worked in a matter of a few days. I am told you can get it at the natural health section in Fred Meyer so I am sure you can get it other places. You just paint it onto the rash and it clears it up. Good luck.
