Mylanta liquid (or any generic liquid antacid)........applied to the rash. Will tone down the acidity of the skin, and take care of lots of rashes on babies bottoms. Worked on my babies.
Help! My little girl is 5 months old and after a dose of antibiotics for an ear infection she now has what her doctor thinks is a yeast infection. The doctor prescribed Econazole Nitrate cream, which I have applied three times so far and the rash seems MUCH worse. I am giving her probiotics but I don't know what else to do and she really seems uncomfortable. Any advice???
Thank you everyone for your help with this. Finally she is getting better!!! We did the yogurt therapy and left the diaper off for days. We also did the baking soda baths and dried her with corn starch. Also the Dr. Smith's was a big help and we still use that. It looks like we may be going to round two as I am sick and she is getting a stuffy nose as well. But at least we are prepared this time with the acidophilus and my sister is coming to help out!!!!
Thanks again-R. and Chloe

Hi my name is M. and I have six children.# boys and then 3 girl. My girls would get yeast infections also when they were put on medications, thier Doctor told me to use a cream called Lotromin AF I believe that how you spell it.It is used for anti-fungus for men's feet.So you can find this in that dept.in the stores. It's awesome.
I actually had this same problem with my son some 15 years ago. I used over the counter yeast infection creams, and it worked like a charm. Good luck.
This might sound crazy. BUt since she can't eat yogurt put some down there. It helps level out the good bacteria. Just scoop some plain yogurt and smear it on. Let it "soak" in and then wash off.
When I was younger I got a really bad infection and the Dr. told me about this. It works and actually has sense as to why..
Good luck!
Try giving her plain yogurt. That is what the doc told me to do when my kids when they were little like that got yeast infections and when they got thrush in there mouth. It cleared it right up.
Hi there, my daughter gets yeast infections periodically and other than yogurt (which if you're not feeding her any baby food yet is out) I apply Aquaphor topically. It has been the only thing I've found to help relieve her symptoms and it seems to work very quickly. I also apply a nice warm rag on her beforehand which seems to comfort her as well. Aquaphor can be found at any local drug store. Good luck!!!
The trick to the yogurt remedies is that you have to look for the live cultures on the label, if the yogurt doesn't contain acidolifus (sp) it isn't really going to be effective. Most yogurts contain live cultures; all of which are probiotic, but look in your "natural" refridgerated food section at the grocery store. You'll find soy yogurts etc., but more specifically "Kefir" does have the probiotic you need. You should also find acidolfus(sp) in glass jar form, plain white yogurt (used in other countries to cook with) I'm not sure what it tastes like, but the Kefir has berries in it, & I don't remember at what age it is okay to introduce strawberries etc. to small children. If your Dr. okays it, and it seems as though he already is believer in probiotics, he'll be able to tell you if she can have Kefir or if you should give her the plain white form. If it were me, I'd stick to the plain one. I hope this helps. I have used the Kefir myself as soon as I feel a yeast infection coming on, and it has worked fine.
I'm Pediatric nurse--The doc's just recommend using Plain Antifungal cream/ Monostat just like mom would use... Apply every diaper change to entire diaper area not inside vagina.. Also, Don't use any diaper wipes--Just use paper towel and water until infection clears.. Also, causes of yeast infection-- Change of Washing powder, Bubbles baths, colored toilet paper..
Hope this helps
I think you should take her back to the doctor as soon as possible. It may be that she is allergic to the medicine or that its too strong of a dose for her. If nothing changes when you take her back to the doctor, please seek a second opinion. Take her to another doctor.
Our son got a yeast infection after a round of antibiotics also. The doctor just told me to use an over the counter medicine that I would use if I had a yeast infection. Worked like a charm AND I did not have to pay an outrageous amount for a prescription ointment. Good Luck!
Feed her yogurt. Yo Yo baby makes a few different flavors and it is for babies. I fed that to my daughter when she was younger, she was on antibiotics a lot and always had thrush and a yeast infection. It always worked and looked better after the first time.
That cream you are putting on her is probably to strong for her soft sensitive skin. I would go to another pediatrician.
my daughters not that young anymore but shes 3 yrs old when she was to she experanced that i just put monastat on once a day and it went away
I recently took my 13 month old daughter for a check up and inquired about what I thought was a diaper rash. My Ped. informed me that it was a yeast infection. He told me to buy some Lamisil and to apply to the red area twice daily. I've been doing it for about 4 to 5 days and it's gotten much better. Good luck! :)
My son has had a couple of yeast infections and my Dr. had told me just to get the Lotrimin AF (it says on the tube cures most Athlete's foot, but Really Works!!) or at Wal-Mart get the cheap equate brand antifungal cream that seems to work great and I still use it pretty regular if even I think that he's got a little yeast down there.... Hope this helps, maybe just try it to see if I will work....
My daughter has battled yeast infections after antibiotics all of her life. The best thing in the world I have found is CHLORTRIMAZOLE You buy it at Wal-Mart in the pharmacy by the athlete foot cream. Within 2 days, my daughter is completely clear. We have been using this for 7 years and I love it. It's not expensive either, about $3.00 a tube.
I have a salve that work wonders for cuts and irritations.
I works great for diaper rashes and works instantly to soothe.
It is called Turtle Island Shotgun Skin dressing.
You can find it at a health food store or Google it and buy it online.
If you look for it at a health food store you should call around first because it is hard to find.
Hope this works for you.
Try Lotrimin cream.....this is the brand that worked best for our kids as the rest eg. Econazole burned and seemed to make it worse. Keep her without a diaper as much as possible and try not to touch the site with anything other than the Lotrimin. Be sure to call your Pedi. and let them know the Econazole didn't work.
Good luck and I hope your precious daughter is better very soon!

mom to 5
If that didn't work it might not be a yeast infection. I may be a little confused but, if its a diaper rash try vasoline and cornstarch. vasoline first seals it. no wetness to burn. The cornstarch straight from the fridge just sprinkle over the top. that will help the itch. also, the yeast infection cream you buy otc works pretty well also. i had to learn w/ my oldest daughter the prescription ones didn't work. Dr. Smiths works pretty well. I think you have to ask the pharmacist for it though..worth a shot..
Lil girls always get yeast when taking antibotics. My mother always washed my daughter with a cool towel and made sure she stayed dry. If you can let her go without the pamper for a bit. The yeast infection is going to get worse until it run its course then it'll clear up. Keep applying the cream if it don't clear up after 7days she might need a better cream for it.
take your child back to the doctor.
My son got a couple of yeast infections when he was about 2 or 3 and in diapers (yes, boys get them, too) and his pediatrician recommended using over-the-counter Vagisil cream during diaper changes, and frequent changes until it cleared. Within a few days it was completely gone.
Definitely Yogurt on the actual site of yeast, (not necessarily eaten), baking soda baths, and also plain cornstarch from the baking section. I use that--it is a drying agent and works like a charm. Let her lay on a towel with diaper open as long as you can.
My little boy gets them usually after antibiotics. Use Lotrimin...that usually helps! Good Luck.
Feed her some yogurt. The live cultures in the yogurt will regulate and bring her ph level back to normal. Take her off the cream and if what she has is a yeast infection, the yogurt will take care of it.
Okay...this is going to sound weird, but the same thing happened to my daughter when she was a baby. The doctor and the daycare she went to both suggested using Lotrimin AF. It's usually for Athlete's Foot, but since they are both fungal infections it worked!
Apply it sparingly at first.....it worked for us in just a few days. Use it after each diaper change and you should start to see some results.
Good luck! :)
My daughter has had it in the past and just keep using the medicine it works. Also ask you Doctor about vusion onitment. My baby is now 2.5 and potty training and she got one a month ago. So it can still occur in older girls too. Nothing breaks my heart more than this since I know how uncomfortable I am and I can only imagine how uncomfortable she is. Just hang in there and the treatment does work it just takes a few days....as with us.

Hi R.,
My daughter also gets yeart infections just looking at antibiotics or anything else. She's 7 now, and we stand by a few things that help.
Nistatin Oinment - NOT CREAM has been a savior. The cream burns so you have to make sure to tell the doctor OINTMENT - it stays on longer because its more of a vaseline like substance - it is by prescription. If you can't get the doc to write this -Try some corn startch. best 88 cents box money can buy. When Sami was a baby, I not only used corn startch in her diaper but soaked her in it (bathtime). i didn't use any scented talc of any kind - not even Baby Powder - I only used the Cornstarch... The corn startch helps dry up the rash, and to this day she still 'bakes biscuits' in the tub. She loves to play with it and it kills two birds with one stone... now that she's older I also give her ascedophelous (msp) to chew up before her antibiotics, it helps with the stomach upset and lessens the severity of her yeast infection substationally. I also let her go diaperless for a bit to so her privates could get air - instead of being bound up by the diaper / damp + yuck = itch :o)
Hope you are able to give her some relief!
Steffanie
If you or the daddy smoke cigareetes that cuuld be your problome. I know this because my husband was smoking, my daughter had ear problems all the time. After he quit, all the ear problemes whet away. I hope this helps.
The only thing I have heard of to help with that is to give yogurt. I hope your little one feels better soon. (Sorry if you've already gotten this advice. I'm new!)
Have you tried rubbing Monostat Cream directly on the spots that are inflamed?
Best Wishes,
C.
I've discovered that anytime, anyone takes antibiotics they should also take the probiotcs. I keep them on hand all the time. If I feel a yeast infection coming on (even when I'm not taking antibiotics) I start taking the probiotics and it takes care of it within a day.
Now that she already has it, I agree with the person who said let her air out. I remember my Mom telling me that back in the 60's if you were pregnant and had a yeast infevtion there was nothing they could do for you. The doctor had her lie in bed with a fan blowing on her. I know it sounds wierd but she says it worked.
Hi R.,
I have a little boy and he's only 13 month's .He has had 3 yeast infections due to the antibiotics prescribed for him.The yeast is a side effect from the medication and that's very common. At first it starts out like a diaper rash then you start to notice it's a little more serious then a rash. I know it looks bad but she will be fine. I never thought a little boy could get yeast infections. The Econazole Nitrate cream worked really well for my son. It's going to take about a good four days before you see some change. The only advice I can give you is to not wipe your daughter with a wipe and use a warm cloth. Also my son's pediatrician recommended to me if my son were to get an ear infection in the future I should apply the Nitrate cream at the same time I start giving him the medication to avoid him from getting a yeast. I found that really good advice and it works.
FYI: Warm bath's with just a little of baking soda help the itchy feeling for her...
Always,V.
My granddaughter who is 14 months old has had a yeast infection 3 times after antibiotics. Call your Dr. and ask them to change cream and also give her yogurt. This helps a lot. So sorry as my daughter spent a couple of sleepless nights because of the infection. Try the yogurt.
let that little girl air out! I would let her go with out a diaper or cream for a bit and let the air do it's job.
This may sound weird but put buttermilk on the yeast infection. Forget all that fancy stuff. Good luck.
try using Vusion it helped my granddaughter that stuff is awesome we saw improvement in one day.shes twenty-two months and thats all we use
My daughter has had a problem with yeast infections too. I took her to the doctor and she prescribed Vusion....it's great. It started to work right away, the redness started to go away within the next diaper change but you still have to use it for the time recommended for it to get rid of it completely. You should ask your doctor about it. I don't think it's as strong as the stuff you are using now..my friend used that one on her daughter and it got worse and not better then she talked to her doctor and got Vusion and it worked right away.
I've seen advertisements for a prescription medication called Vusion which treats a diaper rash & yeast infection. Here is a link to their site. http://www.vusionointment.com/
You should ask your pediatrician to see what he/she thinks.
Good luck!
Feed your little girl yogurt daily, unsweetened, for the friendly bacteria needed to fight the yeast. Sugar encourages the yeast to grow, so no sugar. Also, a minimal dose of a fourth to a half a teaspoon of liquid cod liver oil daily, which comes in flavors.
The yogurt fights the yeast and the vitamin A in the cod liver oil helps keep ear infections away. Old time doctors always recommended cod liver oil for babies. It still holds true even though doctors now days never give it a thought. Antibiotics lowers the vit A in the system, which is essential to prevent ear infections ... sort of like a "Catch 22", right?
Also, find a cream with Vit A to rub on her rash.
I've been in the health food business for nearly 30 years and the above is what customers over the years have used for your baby's problem. They have found it to be quite helpful.
Good luck, CBG
My son also gets yeast infections. Our doc prescribed Vusion ointment and that really helps him. I am also switching to chlorine free diapers to see if that cuts down on his yeast infections.
my preemie got a terrible yeast infection after two rounds of antibiotics. We were using Terconazol 4 times a day and diaper cream (Dr. Smith's) with every other change. Nothing seemed to help. So, one evening I put a towel on the floor and let her play with out a diaper. The next day we were on our way to a clear hiney! Good Luck!
The Econazole Nitrate cream they prescribed is just Monestat cream, so it my not help, I know that it doesn't work for me. When my daughter had a yeast infection they gave her the Nitrosole ointment and that worked wonders. I also think that they make diflucan in a liquid form and that always helps with mine. Hope this helps.
She may be allergic to the medicine. Ask your doctor for a different type of cream.Continue probiotocs. Do not make your child suffer. J. K.
You may have already tried this, but I'll say it anyway! Yeast love dark, damp places (like diapers!) Try letting your baby go without one for as long as possible by laying her on a towel and maybe put a fan to blow on her to help the air circulate better. Also, a friend of mine said try to just rinse her off in the sink when she has a dirty or wet diaper instead of using wipies. This seemed to help my daughter when she had a yeast infection. It may take a few days. Hang in there!
I have a friend who's daughter got a yeast infection from antibiotics for ear infections also. A couple of moms from our mom's group suggested to her to use athlete's foot cream. She did and it took the yeast infection/diaper rash away. You might seek a doctor's advice on this.
Yeast is fed by sugars and starches...so I would recommend cutting those out of the diet as much as possible. Change her regularly...don't even let her get damp...you might even want to air her out daily for a few days. Be sure to dry her very well when you've bathed her too. If you live near a good natural food store, you might go and ask someone there what they recommend. Garlic can be used in a bath for fighting yeast, but I'm not exactly sure how that is done. Also, there are great naturalpaths and homeopaths that could help. Possibly even a lactation cunsultant could point you in the right direction.
As an adult I found out I was allergic to monstat (sp?) so your daughter may also be allergic to that cream. I would stop using the cream if it is getting worse and call the doc for something else. I've used lotrimin on my girls and it seems to do the job. Also, make sure you get some probiotics in her tummy so counter the yeast. Good luck! Yeast infections are the worst!
My daughter had what her pediatrician said looked like what yeast will do to the diaper area (small red bumps...very small)
she just had me put on clotrimazole- it's an athlete's foot medication. I bought clotriamzole AF and it worked for her...took a few days, maybe a week (she's 2 now, this was when she was maybe 7 or 8 mos. old).
This will sound ridiculous, but it works: Garlic kills yeast. You can buy fresh garlic pods, peel and chop a couple cloves. Boil for a couple of mins in about a cup of water which extracts the garlic oil. Strain, cool and soak cotton balls in the garlic water. I used that solution to clean off diaper area with each diaper change. (A homeopath told me to douche with it when I had a bad yeast infection. So I can personally attest that it DOES NOT burn.) Keep a fistful of cotton balls soaking in an airtight container. You should see same day results. I also used a probiotic and started giving it to the child as soon as they required an antibiotic. Make a fresh batch of garlic water each day. Let the diaper area air dry. In later years I learned you could buy garlic oil. If it requires more than garlic, the prescriptions work too. No, the baby won't stink from the garlic wash. I used this solution with great results on my own 4 kids as well as in a day care. =) Good luck! C.
Have her eat some yogurt. Preferably plain or vanilla, add something to it she really likes to eat. hopefully it will be a fruit but what ever works. Granola cereal is good, or raisens, or apples with cinamon. The reason she got the yeast infection is that the antibotics killed off the good bacteria with the bad. Yogurt will aid the replenishment of the good bacteria from the inside out. As an adult I have had this problem. If I take antiboitics for any reason I immediately start eating yogurt and continue until after the prescribtion has been fully taken.
eat yogurt. it can also be applied to the outter body . it truely helps. I was so grateful to find this out. yogurt has saved me from many a yeast infection as well as quickened the recovery from them. M.
At 5 months, she may be allergic to the cream. My OBGYN said never put anything in any orifice of your body what you would not put in your mouth. Natural unflavored yogurt works to eat it as well as to apply it as a cream where it is needed. It worked for me, and I always opted to try to use natural remedies with my 4 babies. All the best !
My teenage son ended up with a system wide yeast infection that made him so continually sick that I thought he had Lyme Disease. The doctors couldn't figure it out. He had YEARS of antibiotics for ear infections. I read everything I could find and gave him something so simple to cure it. Achidophilus pills. I don't know if a 5 month old can take this,(liquid form available?) but please ask the doctor or ask-a-nurse. It's a natural(good) bacteria found in the gut that gets rid of yeast. She is probably too young for yogart- not sure. Good luck! S.
Hi R.
What I've done with my three girls since birth, and it seems to have help fighting yeast infections is to put a little baking soda in every bath. It also helps by killing the germs that we don't like to think about. It has pretty much completly cut all yeast infections.
In the future: (because you should wait until after the age of 1), but anytime unless it states not to when giving her antibiotics feed her a gogurt, yogurt, or something containing a probiotic
The same thing happened to my daughter at that age. My doctor said to put Lotrimin, like for athlete's foot, on her 2 to 3 times a day. Any time I changed a diaper and didn't use the Lotrimin, I was told to put Dr. Smith's (specifically that brand) on her. They also said to bath her with baking soda in her water. It cleared after 4 or 5 days. I'm all for probiotics too, but they weren't enough to prevent or clear the yeast infection on that round of antibiotics for us. Good Luck!
Hi R. M,
My name is M. D. I am 38 and have two beautiful daughters 11 and 13. I experienced the same things when they were infants. The doctors suggested then to let them "air out" so to speak, as much as possible. So, I would let them go for short periods (about 30 minutes, a few times daily) without their pampers/diapers. The fresh air seemed to help. Or at least not having anything rubbing the area helped. So, you may want to give that a try. Hope this helps! Good Luck.
NISTATION IS THE BEST FOR THAT PROBLEM, MY DUGHTER ALWAYS GOT YEAST INFESTIONS WITH ANY ANTIBOTICS. ANTHOR THING YOU CAN DO IS LET THE SKIN AIR IT IS MESSY,BUT IT HELPS. aLOS WHEN THE YEAST STARTS TO CLEAR UP HERE IS A SURE FIRE REMEDY FOR DIAPER RASHES. 1 PART CORN STARCH, TO EVEN AMOUNT BALMAX AND THEN ADD 2-3 TABLESPOONS FULL OF AN ANTI ACID, NOT A PRODUCT THAT IS BOTH FOR GAS AND ANTI ACID! MIX IT IS THICK, APPLY TO AREA A FEW TIMES A DAY AND ALMOST ANY RASH IS CLEARED UP. MY DAUGHTER WITH HER YEAST INFECTION WOULD GET DIAPER RASH ONTOP OF IT AND I LIKE YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD NEVER GO AWAY AND WITH THE REMEMDY IT CLEARED HER UP. HOPE THAT HELPS,
Try getting her to eat yogert. At least 2 containers a day and if you have some tea tree oil put a 1/2 teaspoon in a cup of water and bathe her bottom in it. You can pour it on if you want to. It may slightly burn for a few seconds but you can rinse it off with cool water pretty quickly. Or just put her in the tub with a teaspoon or two and let her bathe. Tea tree oil is a natural infection fighter and anti-fungus oil. Try it and see if it works for you. I have used it for years when I get a yeast infection.
Peg
Hi R., Yeast infections and thrush commonly seen in infants can be solved with Pre and Probiotics. Probiotics for yeast are very necessary for yeast infection treatment and the restoration of immune and digestive system health. It is the destruction of good bacteria within the digestive tract that allowed the yeast to mutate and spread through out the body in the first place. So replacing these bacteria is very necessary for the healing, long-term prevention of a relapse, and for immune system health.
I am quoting from Dr. Wootan who has a great book on children's health listed below.
"A rash caused by yest is charaterized by small red dots that seem to grow into one another. While most common in the diaper area, this type of rash can also occur in the folds under the baby's chin or arms, in the groin area,,,, or in any area that is not exposed to the air and tends to stay warm and moist. The rash appears very raw and looks painful but in generaly does not cause any discomfort. In order for yeast to grow on the sin in quanitities sufficient to cause a rash, it requires warmth, moisture and an alkaline pH. To alter the pH. to alter the pH so that the skin is no longer a hospitable medium to the yeast, wash the affected area with a vinegar solution of 1/4 to 1/2 c of vinegar in one qt. of water several tmes per day. If the rash is in the diaper area, leve the diaper off as much as possible to keep the skin cool and dry."
He continues if a baby has thrush this can leave the yeast on the mother's breast when she nurses, causing the nipples to become sore and cracked...to treat breaast expose them air as much as possible and keep them dry and treat breast with vinegar solution (be sure to rinse before nursing.
As far as treating the infant...you can use the prebiotice it is a powder and put into a little water or eyedropper to administer..If a child is eating then I would put the little pro biotic into a spoon full of food or cereal
Many people mention yogurt but yogurt simply does not have sufficient amounts of friendly bacteria. In a study done by the University of Washington in 1990 they found that "Most of the lactobacillus containing products currently available either do not contain the Lactobacillus species and/or contain other bacteria of questionable benefit"
Most friendly bacteria products do not contain the proper live friendly bacteria when it arrives on the store shelf or when it is taken the stomach acid destroys the good bacteria. In order to get results you will need a product like Shaklee's Optiflora that has a triple encapsulation. The triple encapsulated probiotic by passes the stomach acid and arrives in the lower colon safely where the good bacteria needs to be deposited. It is a tiny size tablet the size of a b-b and easy to swallow. There is prebiotic powder that goes with this system....it is called FOS. This is what multiplies the friendly bacteria in the lower colon. The directions say take 1 t. I would start you little girl on 1/4 to 1/2 t. to start.
You can read more about the Optifora by reading this link
http://www.shaklee.net/SmartHealthChoices/product/80638
I have also recommended optiflora to moms who children with ear infections as well.
Here is another article posted on a website that explains how the friendly bacteria works for our health.

I hope this helps. This was invaluable to for my children. Another good book to have on hand is by a friend of mine. Dr. Georg Wootan, Take George of Your Child's Health. He provides a great guide for common childhood ailments and how to treat them.
