I would definitely post your yard sale on craigs list!
I am having a garage sale on Friday and Saturday and need to find an inexpensive way to advertise it. I called the Allen American and for I believe a 4 line add was $32.00! Needless to say I thanked the nice man for his time. What are some frugal ways to say hey, please come shop and get some of these wonderful things out of my house, we are moving in 6 weeks and we don't need this stuff.
Thank you all for the advice on this! I was all gung ho for the yard sale, but I do have some high quality items and where as I am happy to donate them, this is not what I am attempting to accomplish--if that makes sense.
I have some great maternity clothes from Motherhood and Expressiva as well as JCPenny and even Target. Also, baby stuff that's Carters, Osh Kosh, etc. An queen sized iron sleigh bed (gorgeous, but now I have king sized bed), a queen bed, etc. You get the idea. I do have some inexpensive items, that would be perfect for a garage sale, but the stuff that's worth something think I'm going to stick to craigslist and ebay. And possibly try the consignment store. A yard sale, where as it'd be nice to unload things, I just don't want to see thousands of dollars worth of items go for next to nothing, unless I donate it, which makes me feel good too, and of course the tax deduction is nice too.
Thank you! If anyone has anything else to add to this, please feel free! I'm listening.
Oh and books, cd's, music, etc, I am going to haul to Half Price Books :)
Update on the Update :)
We had the garage sale Saturday morning and it went really well. I did not put out all my "expensive" stuff just some of it and did pretty good. Some items sold without question and if someone haggled over something that was brand new/expensive I just said no. It worked out. We did end up with approx $120 profit, not counting a bed & frame we sold for $250.
It turned out okay. Even the weather cooperated nicely. I think we may try one more time and organize things better, price somethings a little lower, but comfortable with donating it to the ACO ultimately.
I would definitely post your yard sale on craigs list!
You can put up a couple of signs as well. I see signs a lot. I think you have to have a permit (free to my knowledge).
Just be ready though for people to want your stuff for nothinig. I have found that garage sales are a waste of my time because everyone wants something for nothing. I do better donating to the women's shelter and salvation army and taking the tax benefit.
Good luck to you!

I have done Craigslist in the past and the bright signs. We do not live in a very busy street, so I barely had any people come, it was late and my total profit for the day was only $20 and that was including furniture and clothes, it was pretty sad. I gave up and advertised on Craigslist, "Yard Sale, Everything is Free" All of the sudden everyone showed up! Go figure. If you have very expensive stuff, I think it is worth it to advertise on the newspaper, if not than go for the other options and cross your fingers. If you don't sell all, donate it to charity and get a tax deduction. I have a neighbor that did that and she said her tax deduction was a whole lot more than any yard sale she ever had. That's what I plan on doing this year.
I am having a garage sale this weekend too and was just asking this same question (when I got this email) to some ladies on a mommy forum I'm on. LOL The only other thing I could think of was Craigslist! I'm going to wait until Thurs. night or even Fri. morning to post, though, I think. Was hoping you had more responses. LOL
I had good luck advertising on craigslist.com and it's FREE! :) Just be sure you give very clear, specific directions!
CRAIGSLIST.com is the best way to advertise almost anything.
Also, I am all for donating but in todays economy I know my one income family of 5 needs all the extra money we can get with gas prices as they are... dont let anyone pressure you into donating, if you need the money then you have a sale and get as much as you can! we had a sale a couple of week ago and made nearly $200.00 for about 4 hours so it was worth it and we gave the left overs to the womens shelter. But the 200.00 was much needed to get us through the month.

I always look for garage sales on craigslist but I find most of mine just driving around. A big tip...just make simple bright signs with arrows on them leading them to your sale. There is nothing worse than a garage sale sign that has the address written in ity bity print that can't be read as you drive by without creating an accident and once you read it you have no way of knowing how to get to that address. Just my two cents worth.... Good luck with your garage sale.
