Would You Be Concerned

We have been fighting constipation issues for at least two years now and we went to a GI doctor yesterday. While at that appointment we discovered that our daughter has lost one pound since November, but has grown in her height. She is now back to the weight percentile that she was when she was 3 which is 10%, but she is in the 50th percentile for her height. That is the highest she has ever been for height! She is now four and a half years old and I'm concerned that she has grown in height but has lost weight. Would you be concerned or am I crazy??

What can I do next?

Please don't freak out!!! Kids grow and lose weight and then gain weight. Over the summer - expect her to stay even if not lose or gain some - as most kids are VERY active in the summer.

I wouldn't worry about one pound. And if the Doctor's not worried - why should you?

Focus on her diet and getting her regular so that her bowels don't get messed up....I know how hard it is to "fix" the bowels once they get swollen from constipation....can you talk to a nutritionist to see what would be best for her and her body? Is it possible she has Crones or Celiac Disease and that is what is causing her constipation?

It's okay mama - breathe!! You are a good mama for paying attention!!! Don't freak. She'll be fine!!

If the doctor is not concerned then I wouldn't worry. My daughter has growth spurts twice a year one where she gets taller and then in winter a little heavier.

Try some probiotics for the constipation she can take them with foods and medications.

one pound does not sound concerning to me. Kids fluctuate quite a bit the first 5 years. Don't panic but do introduce lots of fiber and fresh fruits and veggies and lotsa water and exercise into your current diet.

Don't worry. I don't think docs should tell people about whatever percentile they consider the child to be in. Every child is an individual as as individuals we are all different.

If your child is healthy, is eating a well-balanced diet and getting plenty of sleep and exercise, don't worry about it. If you start trying to pack on weight, next thing you know she'll be overweight which is much worse than being slim.

As children get taller they thin out, If the doctor is not concerned, i wouldn't worry, give her pastas, macaronni and cheese things like that and see if it makes a difference. good Luck J.

It really sounds quite normal, children gain weight and grow in height at different times is all. And she's of the age when children are losing any baby fat/chubbiness/excess body fat so if her doctor isn't concerned I wouldn't be either.

You are not crazy! My daughter hits these terrible growth spurts and then looks SOOO skinny! Usually after a little time, she fills out again. If the docs arent too worried, then I wouldnt be either. Now, if the trend continues, that is another story.

In my experience, kids grow "out,' first, then they grow UP....it's not unusual at all for a child to gain weight then have a growth spurt.

I remember MANY times, where I would be getting my son dressed and think "whoa...pants/shorts getting REALLY tight around the waist!" only to have them fit way more loosely in 4 weeks! Then I'd think "Yay...no pants shopping!"

maybe try a probiotic with her :) then a light laxative (little tummies) once a day or prune juice.
