T.,
I know you're feeling all too well as it has been my goal to take advantage of this market as well. I'm a single mom of two, and I put the brakes on actually doing it myself because of job stability right now. However, I want to let you know that Redford has really nice homes that are usually ranch and some bungalows. The school district is recommendable and the service is as well (as far as police, recreation centers, snow removal and so forth). My best friend and her husband has lived in Redford for about 7 years and I honestly don't think she'll ever move.
At least then you can keep your money in Wayne County as you specified. I was a Detroiter too (DIE HARD) to the bone until my house was broken into and dispatch told me "what you want me to do?" when I called for them to send out the police. I walked in and they were still there! So that was the icing on the cake for me! I never lived in that house or Detroit again! I'd love to go back but it needs to get better. Though it can happen anywhere, (if you look at the news you see it happening everywhere) I wouldn't mind coming back when it's better. But check Redford out, and if you're looking to go across into Oakland county Oak Park has what you're looking for and Southfield does as well. I don't know the distance you're willing to go, but I also have a good friend that purchased a house in Canton. Beautiful house with a great neighborhood surrounding with all of the services you specified. Look around, if you need assistance Diane Kiellian is a great realtor & her number is ###-###-####. I'm still getting things from her even though I'm waiting, and she'll inform you of grants and everything.
Best of luck!
A
