Would It Be Ok to Start My Baby on Enfamil Gentlease/Prosobee from the Start?

With my first son, we gave him Enfamil Formula. After a couple of months, he got real colicky and we ended up having to change the formula to the Enfamil Prosobee for less gas.

Now our second baby is due at the end of this month and I was wondering if it would be ok to start him on the Enfamil Gentlease/Prosobee from the start? I don't see a problem, but just wanted some other Mom'sj/Dad's advice on what they think, or have been told by their Pediatrician. I will also ask my pediatrician as well, but just want to get some heads up first.

Thanks a bunch! Have a great day!

So What Happened?

Some of you are being very judgmental. I don't really appreciate that. You don't know me, and you don't know my body and what it will or will not do.
My first born was on Enfamil formula the whole 12 month period. He has had only ONE ear infection, and he's four now!!!!! So, that is a myth that formula fed babies can increase the chance for more ear infections. It has to do with ones body. Each individual is different. Breast milk is always best...I am well aware of that. But...this is my choice, and Enfamil is a great brand of formula and I trust it.

As far as FDA approved, well there are plenty of meds out there that are FDA approved and do significant damage to our bodies. Breast milk isn't FDA approved. LOL So, even though Enfamily may not be FDA approved, doesn't mean that it cannot provide the nutrition a baby needs in order to grow healthy.

Formula doesn't cause FAT kids/adults. Parents have a hand in that and so does the individual. For kids, it's up to the parent to RESTRICT certain foods in order to help them maintain a healthy weight...and be examples themselves!!! People are way too quick to blame something else, when the problem is the home environment.

Thank you to those who actually answered my question about formula and gave me a positive and kind answer. To the others...I know you mean well, but it appears to me that you are being judgmental towards me because I choose to formula feed. I am well aware the difference between formula and breast milk...but some people, like me; breast feeding isn't an option for reasons that I do not have to explain or defend to anyone.

it's great that you are so concerned about your baby's health. even though you wouldn't believe it from all the advertising, the best thing for your baby is to breastfeed. study after study shows that babies who are breastfed are more intelligent, have less chance of becoming obese, are healthier, have less ear infections...and the bonding with baby is great!

right after giving birth, insist that the baby goes to the breast and keep him there! (if they tell you you don't make enough milk, it is untrue! think about it - for a million years we as a species have been breastfeeding our babies. for only 100 years have we been using artificial formula. if we as women did not have enough milk, then we wouldn't be such a prolific species!)

for breastfeeding it is a supply and a demand thing. so the more your baby nurses, the better your supply will be. also, make sure the hospital doesn't give him any bottles or pacifiers.

a great resource for breastfeeding is at www.mothering.com. go to their "community" section and you will find about four forums dedicated just to breastfeeding!

congratulations.

edited to add:
we are all judgmental. we are humans. you are judgmental too. if you think enfamil is a great formula then at least read the ingrediants. after all, it is what your baby will be surviving on SOLELY for the first six months.

I gave you some great breastfeeding resources because there is so little support for breastfeeding in our society. too many times we are told that we can't breastfeed when in reality we CAN. we are made to. it not only benefits our babies, but ourselves (lower rates of such things as breast cancer...).

As a teacher of newborn care I would strongly suggest that yo do research on the formulas. Yes, babies do live and grow on formula. BUT, did you know that NO formula's in the U.S. are approved by the FDA? The first time a formula is tested on an infant is the first time a new can is opened and given to a baby. (would you want to be the first mom who said to the FDA "yes, you can use my baby for trial formulas?"
They are now tracing infertility and reflux to formula along with a number of other abnormalties. The study of formula's is scary. More and more is coming out.
I am so sorry your little one had issues and I know as a parent you will do anything to prevent them. Please talk to your Ped. and hopefully he will be able to direct you in the correct path. Most Peds. say what they think you want to hear.
I apologise if this sounded hard. I am an advocate for newborns,I deal with them everyday and see these types of issues all the time. Parents want the best for their children but want it the fastest/easiest way possible. Most of the time the best way is the most work.
Good luck. One more thing. Don't expect this new baby to be like your first baby. Each child is different.

My son had all sorts of issues with formula and we finally got to Enfamil ProSobee after 6 months. After we switched him he did much better. When our daughter was born we decided to put her on ProSobee from the start and she is nine months now and had zero issues with gas and was not colicky at all. In addition whe is growing faster and is much happier all around then our son was. Whatever anyone says I would put your second child on ProSobee right away. Probably will make your world a lot easier!

ok... in response to all the pro-breastfeeding responses from earlier..... do whatever you feel comfortable with. I have 3 sons and I breastfed my middle one for 2 weeks and my youngest one for a couple days. My oldest never was breastfed. My sons range in age from 19 to almost 4 and they have all been extremely healthy.

anyway....I'm not sure about that specific type of Enfamil. I think we just used a basic one. BUT.... We did use Dr. Brown's bottles & have heard from several people who used them to stop colicky babies. We used them from the beginning and never had any issues with that.

Of course. Our first child had a milk allergy, but didn't find out till she was over 1. So she was on milk based formula. We were so afraid with our second that we gave him the soy based right after I was done nursing.
Now with our 3rd, he was on milk based after nursing, but it seems he too has issues, so he's now on soy. but there is no issue with starting with soy from the beginning. It's just a different type of protein, one is no better than the other.
