Has anyone heard of a bug going around that causes sever diarrhea that lasts for over a week in small children? My Granddaughter is 2 and is haveing an awful time. It is green and smells awful and very liquid. The Pedi. doctor said not to worry as she is so active, alert and not dehydrated. BUT THIS is not normal. The parents have tried all the usual things. So I appreciate any advice/information that anyone has so we can help our little angel. One might think as I have raised several children I would be more relaxed about this but she is just so young. Thank You All, Nana G

Yes, there is a very nasty virus going around, I am a midwife and I was taking care of a baby post-partum for a family and the baby got this virus and had diarrhea for 2 weeks, we were all very concerned but it did turn around. All the advice you have gotten here has been good, especially the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). Keep your granddaughter's bottom coated with diaper cream and as clean as possible, also make sure she is hydrated. If she is still breastfeeding that's best, but if not try pedialite or another electrolyte balanced drink or popcicle. Take care and good luck!

Hi Nana G,

I'm sorry to hear that your granddaughter is going through this. Hope she feels better soon.

My son had this a few months back. It went on for more than 2 weeks. His appetite was nearly normal by the end of the first week, but the diarrhea continued. The doctors just asked us to keep him hydrated and on the BRAT diet.

Towards the start of the 3rd week, I started giving him a dose of a probiotic (culturelle...found it at walgreens), as had been recommended, by the doctor once a day. Coincidentally or not, the poop started solidifying soon and by middle of the week, it was close to normal again. I don't know if it was the probiotic that helped or it had just finished its course.

Hope this helps.

Hi D.,

The body is amazing. It is always taking care of itself. Make sure she gets plenty of water. Good water that has been filtered.

There are some natural ways to help her body clean up the bug and get her body healthy and strong.

If you are interested in learning more let me know and I will show you how.

Some viruses can distrupt the intestinal track and it can take several weeks for the body to repair the lining of the track. Sometimes this can cause diarrhea for two weeks. Keep hydrating and give the BRAT diet (bananas rice apples toast) and it should clear up shortly.

It sounds like rhoda (sp?) Virus. My youngest daughter had it twice. It is aweful liquidy dihrrea that can last weeks. Hers lasted three weeks both times and she had the most exruciating diaper rash. She had no other symptoms -- no fever, no loss of appitite, no change in activity level, etc. But is was aweful. I'm sorry you guys are goong through thism

My advise to you would be to keep her hydrated, stick with really basic foods - rice, bread, my pediatrican recommended apple sauce, etc. And try to keep her as dry/diapper free as possible.

Good luck

M

Yes, there is a bug going around. My 2 year old had the same thing for 7 strait days. I was so worried about him, but it finally stopped. The doctor said the same thing to me, as long he's dehydrated don't worry about it. Just keep giving her liquids and she'll get better soon.

Try taking gluten out of her diet for at least 1 week. Some kids are very sensitive to gluten. If the helps talk with the doctor about celiacs.
