I have an awesome new wool rug, which I got for a steal of a deal garage-sailing; BUT:::

How do you keep the shedding of fibers down?

AND

How and/or with what do I do to pre-treat it against stains?

By stains I mean 6 long haired chihuahuas and 2 young teen boys....wow!

THANKS!!! I LOVE THIS SITE!!

What can I do next?

If it were my wool rug, I'd call the company that will clean it when it gets dirty. I'd ask them both about the shedding and the pre-treatments. By the way, I use Nature's Miracle for pet mistakes and I'm very happy with that product!

Shedding will lessen over time, and wool repels dirt better than other fibers. Unless it's a really light color, I wouldn't worry about dirt and I wouldn't try to treat it with anything. You can wash a wool rug with Woolite. I take it outside on a really hot day, and scrub it and rinse with hose really well.

If it's a shag rug, on the other hand, you'll have to get it dry cleaned. And I've also used Nature's Miracle for pet messes on my wool rugs.

Frequent vacuuming and regular carpet cleaning. I have a carpet guy that comes every 4 months to do my rugs (including wool) and the carpet on my stairs. I have 3 kids, no animals.

Had O. luxurious wool rug in my family room....was very happy when it was time to replace.
It does get "less sheddy" over time.
I vacuumed constantly.

Mine just shedded less over time....seems to be how it works??? Just my experience. I vacuum everyday...one is an entry rug and I do home daycare...lots of foot traffic....the other in my (family only) living room. We have two cats that shed white...a short hair and long hair. Both rugs are darker colored (one is magenta...one is a gray and black geometric pattern...cat hair shows up alot on both!)

I vacuum a lot. I know, but, the shedding can be really bad.
