I need to know how to make a 10 year old wooden fence look "new" again. I remember reading that you could spray bleach or something on it and it would look fresh again. Does anyone know for sure?

Bleach works just as well as products advertised for fence cleaning, and it's A LOT cheaper. Put it in a garden sprayer mixed with water (about 50/50) and spray the fence. After you've sprayed the entire fence, go back and rinse with the garden hose. If you use a stain or water sealer afterward, it will not gray as fast.

Years ago I used a fence cleaner that sprayed on and basically bleached the fence. Then I did a spray on stain. Got both products at Lowes and had great results.

You can buy a sprayer, similar to the ones you can buy for pesticides (about $30), at Home Depot or Lowes. Fill it with stain, and spray the fence. Don't forget to check the Oops paint section for the chance that they might have what you need for alot less money!

I had a company come in and do mine. They had some kind of pretreater that worked wonders. I actually thought they had restained it just from that treatment. Then I also had them stain it. It looked like new. www.fence-rx.com

My father always used a sprayer, like the ones you pump up by hand and put oxyclean detergent in it and sprayed the fence. Then you have to come behing it again and spray it with just water to rinse the soap off. It works really well, then you can stain it to help protect it.

I'm actually doing my fence this week. I'm using a power washer to clean and then a sprayer to re-stain it. It's a miracle how much better they look when you do this.

This is also a great time to fix any popped screws and replace any bad boards.

We have a 10 year old wooden fence that had never been stained or taken care of when we moved into our home. The professionals did use bleach water on the fence to take off the old mildew, etc. that was on the fence and it really restored it back to the original wood, then we had them stain it to protect it from future damage. Several of our neighbors did the same thing and these old fences now look new again. We used Superior Wood Care. The number is: 972-423-WOOD.

Best of luck!

I know someone that used to spray his wooden fence with bleach and yes it did definitely make a difference in the appearance. He had a riding lawn mower with a little trailer behind it with a sprayer on it, and would just drive along sparying it from top to bottom and it did work. Good Luck

I had someone pressure wash my fense about two years ago and it needs it again. They put a light stain on it to protect it but I think they did not spray a lot on it. It looked new for awhile and could not believe the gray turned to honey by doing it. G. W

Well, this is repeat advice but a pressure washer works wonders. It is amazing the difference you will see. Be sure to apply a stain or sealer after so that the "new" look will last longer.

My husband owns a fence staining and restoration company. You would be surprised how effective a good clean and stain are on aging wood. His website is www.fencepolice.com. There is information on the website about his 2-step process, as well as his contact information. He could provide you with additional details.

My husband just rented a power washer and powerwashed our fence - it looks BRAND NEW!! We didn't use anything but water. We were thinking we might have to replace the whole thing (we inherited it with the house), but we thought that power washing was worth a shot. I'm telling you, it looks amazing! We did replace the "cap" that runs along the top of the fence, and you can barely tell that the cap is newer than the rest of the fence. I am absolutely thrilled with my "new" fence!
