Wisdom Teeth:( - Wyoming,MI

So I looked in all of the other questions asked just to see what people had to say and no one has asked about getting wisdom teeth pulled. Next thursday I am having my two top wisdom teeth pulled just under local anesthesia. The dentist said that it should be quick and easy since they are most of the way through and the roots are straight up and down. I am so nervous. Im not a baby but I still have to take care of my 2 year old so I cant drug myself up. I was just wondering if any of you moms have had yours out and how you felt. Oh and what do you eat afterward. It doesnt seem like you could really eat much. Only soft stuff. Well thanks in advance. N.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW never imagined so many responses. So i should of said yes i do have room for them and have had them for 7 years. The reason i am getting them out is because i have a cavity in one. And since im getting one they are both coming. So i have asked my SIL to take me and my Mom is watching the kids till bedtime. Ive decided just not to think much about it. Thank you so much for the responses.

I had mine out at 17. 2 were impacted, 2 were not. I slept all day on the first day and by the second day I switched over to ibuprofen, went to a job interview (and got the job!), and went to a movie at the theater. My husband on the other hand, had all 4 of his out at 24 and was a baby!!! Granted they were all impacted, but he stayed home from work for 4 days, stayed on vicodin for 2 weeks, ibuprofen for 2 months, and still complained about it 6 months later. I'm so glad I had the babies. :)

When I had mine removed, they came out real easy, however, my daughter had her bottom two removed (they were impacted). She had to eat soft foods for a few days and took Ibuprofen. She said this worked better than the Vicadin the doctor prescribed.

I remember it wasn't real bad but I was drugged up! I would suggest drugs. Can anybody help you with the 2 year old for the day?

Hi N.,

I had all four of mine pulled out at the same time when I was 23 which was 17 years ago. If you've had 3 kids, this will be a piece of cake compared to childbirth:) My experience was that my mouth was sore for a couple of days, so I took Tylenol for the pain. My cheeks swelled up, but that's because my wisdom teeth were bad. I could only eat soft foods like jello, milk shakes, etc. Having the stitches taken out afterwards was uncomfortable, but not painful. The only thing with mine was that the holes in my mouth from the extractions took a whole year to completely heal (bad teeth). Most of my friends who had their wisdom teeth pulled did not take a long time to heal and two of my friends were back at work the very same day they had theirs pulled. It sounds like yours aren't bad, so I wouldn't worry. Plus, I'm sure that the anesthetic that they use now and the pain meds are much better than when I had mine pulled.

I'll say a prayer for you:)

Good Luck,

M.

Hi N.,

Obviously everyones reaction to having wisdom teeth pulled is going to be different. Just like no two prognancies are alike, no two dentist visits are either. I had three of my wisdom teeth pulled when I was in my first trimester of pregnancy. All three had barely broken the surface and I had no problems at all. (One was actually stuck under a filling on the next tooth.) My jaw was a little sore from keeping it open for so long but I didn't have any bruising nor did I need anything for pain. I was fine as soon as the novacain wore off. I think it depends on your doctor and how good of a job they do. The biggest thing is to watch that you don't suck on anything (like through a straw) and try to eat things that don't take a lot of chewing the first couple days. You want to avoid dry sockets if you can. Your 9 yr old should be able to help you some with your 2 yr old when she gets home from school, have a couple heat and serve meals ready, too, that will also help. Above all else, don't worry, things will turn out fine.

Good luck - S.

I agree with some of the suggestions, Try to get some meds before hand and be prepared. I had 8 teeth pulled at once when I was 18. I had it on a saturday morning, and by Monday i was back to work. i could have worked that Sunday, but took the weekend off. I was put under general, so for me that saturday was a day of sleeping, as i was still feeling the effects of the anesthesia. I only took some tylenol for pain one day and that was it. Defiantly have soft foods around. My oral surgeon had recommend ensure. My dad mixed it with ice cream for me, so it was a shake. It helped to numb the gums and had all the stuff I needed.

Defiantly listen to the list of no's. Such as no straws, they can rip out the stitches. My stitches were dis-solvable, so I didn't need to go and get anything out. I would ask them what to expect and ask what dry socket would feel like. If you get it, it is extremely painful, but can be easily remedied, and you will want to know about it, just in case. I want to say mineral oil is what help it. But you should ask.

Good luck. I think you should be just fine.

You will need some vicodin and penicillon after the procedure. Buy some yogurt ahead of time. Buy the pain meds and antibiotics ahead of time, which means u have to phone the doctors office ahead of time and ask them to phone it into walgreens early so u can pick them up ahead, u won't b in shape to after. get an ice pack. place ice on it after u get home from the procedure. Ask about aspirin, if u can take if after the procedure or not, if u can, get some of that too. get some bob evans mashed potatoes. get some soup ahead of time as well.get some juices as well. it will take a day or two to get better from it.

I am a dental hygienist and I have also had my wisdom teeth extracted so hopefully I can help :) The top teeth are almost always a simple procedure. The most important thing to remember is to take the pain medicine ( either what the dds prescribes or over the counter motrin) BEFORE the numbness wears off. Otherwise you will play catch up all day. Most people are a little sore in the area but not in pain. Also REMEMBER not to drink out of a straw or create any suction in your mouth for the first 24 - 48 hours. Most likely only for a day will you need to eat soft foods such as jello, pudding, mashed potatoes, etc. A lot of people get themselves really stressed out and then realize afterwards it is easier than they thought! You will definitely be able to take care of your 2 year old. Just follow the doc's instructions :) Hope this helps!

N.,
The timing of your question is perfect. I read it this morning before my husband's scheduled wisdom teeth surgery this afternoon. I waited until after to reply.
He had 4 wisdom teeth pulled (one impacted) and only had local anesthesia and nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"). He wore headphones and listened to the radio so he didn't hear as much and the gas made him more relaxed. His oral surgeon also told him top teeth are usually easier than bottom ones. Be prepared to not be able to talk clearly for a couple hours afterward (swelling and mouthful of gauze), and start taking the meds they give you before their numbing wears off. You won't be drugged up in a way that you can't take care of your 2 year old, but you need to limit activity for a couple hours after to help slow the bleeding. Have healthy soft foods, beverages and soups on hand. Plan ahead for after the surgery re: meals for you and your family and variety of ways to keep kids busy so you can rest. I didn't need to but I drove my husband, only for moral support and to pick up the prescriptions (pain killer and antibiotic) on our way home so he didn't have to try to speak. Best wishes for an easy surgery and quick healing!

Hey N.. I have had Many Teeth pulled. lots of oral surgery. its all in your state of mind! Think Tough! its so not painfull, especialy when your teeth are positioned the way they are. Get the Nitrus, and sit back! wear lots Of Chap Stick! your lips will be a wreck after that dryness!
take a white towell with you, liek a wash cloth or bar towell. and hang that outta your mouth. to absorb the blood adn the massive amount of drool you will get. the gauze sucks adn its GROSS too! the little nubbys feel good in the holes left behind, and My opnion this prevents dry socket, which you wanna avoid at all costs. Also I tttttooootally recomend Pure Tea-Tree oil to put directly in your tooth spots so it can heal faster and be a Natural pain releaver. i have a house Full of that stuff, if you want a botle stop by! Im in redford!
Havign your teeth pulled will be a HUGE Blessing for life, so think positive!

I had all four of mine out the same day under local. They wanted to do general, but forgot to pass along that I shouldn't eat anything that morning. It was quite the experience being awake (however my bottom two teeth were impacted - coming in sideways - so it was a struggle to get them out and they had to be broken) through it all. Sounds like yours will be much easier so don't worry because of my experience.

I made the mistake of not getting my meds soon and starting them, so I was in a lot of pain. But the medicine didn't completely knock me out, so don't worry about taking care of your kids, you should be fine. I also used some of those magnet pain blockers (by the second day) and then didn't have to take pain meds once they started to work, so you know the pain wasn't too terrible.

Eat lots of soft foods (soups, mashed potatoes, juice, jello...) and drink lots of fluids. Try the protein water or make some fruit smoothies with peanut butter, yogurt, tofu to get some protein in. Ice cream and milkshakes are good too. ;)

Good luck!

DOn't do it at the regular doctor office! I did that, as they told me mine was going to be an easy extraction as well. It was horrible! They had to keep refreezing my mouth, I could hear everything! Go to an oral surgeant, really! Good luck, A.

You should be fine. You will be sore and probably swollen. The dentist will tell you if you need special treatment, ice versus heat. I had impacted wisdom teeth that had to be cut out, that is different.Son't worry. It will be better after a few days.

Good luck! I didn't find it that bad, and I did have all four done at once.

As for eating, be very careful. My favorites were actually cold, refrigerated baby foods (peaches, bananas, applesauce). They are really healthy, and they don't have 'chunks' in them. Yogurt is good (frozen Go-Gurt would feel soothing). And, it's a great excuse to eat ice cream!

I went on my lunch break and had 2 wisdom teeth pulled. A good dentist will make this a painless procedure. I had no problem. He pulled the tooth and I didn't realize it was done. I returned to work afterwards. I came home and told my husband I had my teeth pulled. He wanted me to lie in the bed and get some rest. He thought it was so awful and he thought I was suffering. (When he goes to the dentist it's a major event) :) I obliged him and laid down while he fixed dinner that night. (I was fine, but I didn't let him know; so I just turned on the TV and chilled)

Hi
I am going to be the wrong one to respond to this one! haha
They wanted to remove mine years ago! I had enough room in my mouth to keep them! They never bothered me! I just make sure I brush really good way back.
Do you have enough room in your mouth for them? Are they a bother? To me it`s just another money maker for them...

N., wisdoms are not a big deal. I had mine yanked back in the late 70's, I have 3 sons and each of them needed having theirs yanked. You're fine within a few days. I would make arrangements for the first 24 hours afterwards, just to be on the safe side. You'll be aching and tired.
The dentist will probably advise soft stuff, like yoghurt, ice pops, plenty of water. Call the dentist ahead of time to know for sure, and so you can plan accordingly.

N.; yes if they are up it wont take too long, and the local wont make you feel anything except numbness in your mouth and yes you wont be able to eat much except soft foods, and you wont be able to suck up a straw, for a while, however, most drs take out wisdom teeth as protocal not cause they need to come out, if they are hurting you then, i can see it, most drs take them out cause they get more money, and they say they can be impacted or half in and half out andyou can get food stuck in them, but being a conscientious cleaner can help you , they can be very painful, and can do damage but if they are not hurting you , then its not necessary to get them removed, however you need to do what is best for you , i still have 3 of my wisdom teeth left, one was soo painful i had to get it removed i was popping 4 aspirin almost every three to four hours, a day , that was not good, i had a good dr and he said he only needs to remove the one that bothers me, so do what is best for you , have a good day , and hope it helps, D. s

Get someone to help you with your son Thursday and Friday. You will need to "drug yourself up". As others have mentioned, soft foods.....but rest after surgery is also necessary. I don't remember having much pain or swelling afterwards, but I was numb for about twelve hours after having my impacted teeth out. Yes, yours sounds easier so you may have a mild recovery but be prepared to be totally out of it on Thursday and maybe Friday.

I had 2 of mine cut out at the same time. I had novacain and laughing gas. I went home and took a 4 hour nap and then it was as if nothing had ever happened. My jaw was a little sore from being so wide for so long but it didn't require a special diet and I don't remember taking anything for pain. if yours are most of the way through it will probably be just like getting a regular tooth pulled. like the ohter poster said listen to the don't list. good luck

HI N.,
Although it has been quite a few years since I had mine done. It really was no big deal. Now I had my top ones done one at a time but I felt fine. I didn't even need any pain meds other then Tylenol. I even went out with friends after one of my teeth being pulled. One thing I always did after was to put tea bags over the pulled tooth area. I had heard that this helps to stop the bleeding. You will be fine. Sometimes thinking about things like this is way worse then the actual procedure.

Hi N., I just had one pulled last month. I took motrin for pain, swelling, and discomfort for a few days and that did the trick for me. As for foods... anything soft. It doesn't really matter WHAT you eat as long as you eat. Tuna, eggs, yogurt, soup, pudding, ice cream. As long as you are eating every 1-2 hours to keep a good calorie supply in your system. Your body will need extra calories to burn as it heals your mouth so eat frequently. You will probably experience discomfort or tenderness for about ten days. By then your gums should have healed enough that not everything will irritate them. Be sure to check a few times a day to ensure nothing is lodged in the empty place.
Good luck... E.

I have had two bottom wisdom teeth pulled. One was impacted and I had to go to an oral surgeon. That one was not fun. At the time I had two toddlers and a 10 month old. My mom helped me for a few days with the littles. The other one was done with nitrous oxide and novacane. It was not impacted so that one was alot easier. The dentist did give me some pretty powerful pain pills, but I really didn't need them. It's my understanding that the uppers are easier than the lowers. Since yours aren't impacted it shouldn't be too bad. Be sure you don't use a straw to drink anything afterwards. That can cause a dry socket, whatever that means, which I understand causes alot of problems and is very painful. All in all it should be fine since they are just being pulled and you don't have to have real surgery. All the best to you!

My 18 year old son just had his done a few weeks ago. Stock up on pudding, applesauce, jello and mashed potatoes. You will need help with your son for the first few hours until the drugs wear off. The first day will be the worst and after that you shouldn't have a problem. If you can find a friend or family member to stay with you the day of and help you and your son out you will be glad you did. Good luck.
