Wine Tasting - Pump & Dump?

My husband and I are going out on our first date since our youngest was born (3 months!) and we're going to a wine tasting before dinner. We've been there before, this place is NOT one where you just taste it & spit it back out. This will be around 6pm, then we'll eat dinner & come home. I have some pumped milk in the fridge for the babysitter, but if we get home around 8 or 9 will that be enough time for the wine to get out of my system? Or should I pump & dump a few times? I've heard of those kits that can test for alcohol in breast milk but none of the stores nearby sell them. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I wasn't planning on drinking much because it's been about 2 years since I've had any alcohol. Over the course of the evening I probably only had the equivalent of 2 glasses of wine, and I felt fine by the time we got home. My baby slept really well last night, so maybe she got just a touch of it anyway!

My doctor told me that a glass or two did not matter but if I wanted to be extra careful, wait about 2 hrs to nurse after having the glass of wine. So if your sipping a glass worths of wine at 6 you should be fine by time time you get home after 8.

I wouldn't pump and dump. Alcohol doesn't hang around in breast milk forever. It clears at about the rate it would take to clear your blood. Honestly, if you are sober enough to drive by the time you get home, you'll be fine to nurse. You are not going to want to go crazy drinking anyway. After not drinking for a year your alcohol tolerance is probably way down and you'll get buzzed pretty easily. Make sure you drink plenty of water before and with dinner so you're hydrated.

I always went by if you're sober enough to drive, it's ok to nurse guideline. But if you tend to feel a bit paranoid about these things, here's a chart to help you:

Hope that helps! I hope you have a very wonderful evening out!!!!!

Unless you are totally drunk, your milk is fine. :) I wouldn't drink and feed the baby at the same time, but if you have some wine and feed the baby or pump a few hours later, your milk won't be tainted. :) No need to pump and dump.

if you feel the alcohol then it is still in your system...depending on how much you have you might be fine by that time...or if you didnt need to pump/feed right away when you get home you could wait an extra hour or so...you only need to dump if you are feeling the effects of the alcohol & you only pump & dump to keep your supply...

Truthfully, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Imbibe lightly and be choosy about what you taste. A taste doesn't mean a glass. You can taste and pour out the extra wine in the glass. I used to work in the wine industry and we have a wine-related business. Spitting or pouring out extra is very acceptable.

I don't drink but I do breastfeed. Could you just take a couple sips and mostly eat cheese? If you don't find your answer, you can always pump and dump to be on the safe side. Just have extra milk on hand just in case. Good luck and have fun on your date!! =D

Milk Screen. Its a strip that you squeeze some milk onto and it tells you your alcohol level in your milk. They used to sell it at babies r us. not sure if they still do. but i used them a few times while still nursing. enjoy the time with your hubby

Just on the Pump and Dump: Totally unnecessary and ineffective. If your BAC is 0% your breast milk alcohol content will be as well.

Pumping and Dumping does not work. If there is alcohol in your system it is in your breastmilk. I went online when I was breastfeeding and found a site that showed how many drinks you could consume per body weight and how long before it was safe to say that it was out of your system and for me I was 120 lbs and I had to wait 2 1/2 hrs per drink to be safe to breastfeed without passing any alcohol on. Hope this helps and have a great evening out.
