Will My Stroller Fit Through the X-ray???

I've read all the responses about getting a stroller onto the plane, but is everyone talking about those little umbrella strollers? Because I have one of those Graco strollers that fits the carseat on it (I think they're called travel systems?). We no longer use that carseat, but we love the stroller, & don't want to buy a new one. But, even folded up, it's pretty big, and I'm concerned it won't fit through an X-Ray machine. I don't want to be stuck disassembling it, or worse, not being able to take it at all. Any advice???

What can I do next?

Believe it or not, it fits! We jsut downgraded to an umnbrella b/c DS is a toddler now and we wanted something more compact, but we took 4 trips on planes when we were still using the Graco Metrolite (that the carseat clips into) and folded up flat it actually did fit through the x-ray machine on the conveyor belt. Every time I was certain it woudl get stuck, but it never did. Bon voyage!

I have traveled with my graco travel system and have also traveled with a double stroller. No worries...they both fit through the x-ray machine.

We just took our 1 year old daughter to Florida and had the same situation...our travel system stroller is large too, we decided not to bring it as even if if did make it through the x-ray machine (I don't think it would have)they would have made us "check" it and we did strictly carry on so luckily my dad was able to borrow a stroller for us to use while we were down there. I would say an umbrella stroller is your best bet for air travel.

When my stroller did not fit through the x-ray they did a very thorough hand check.

I never had trouble fitting my Graco stroller through the X-Ray machine when it was folded up. It was always a close fit, but it made it. I think (?) they can use the wand and explosives detector thing on it if it won't fit though.

I don't know what your travel plans are, but I have traveled with my kids a lot and find a stroller to be kind of a pain in the butt. I usually check it with my luggage if I take one at all. If you have a sling or Baby Bjorn or something similar those are much easier to use up to the gate. It saves the hassle of having to gate check the stroller, and if you're in the gate area for more than a few minutes the baby will probably want to get out of the stroller anyway. Just my opinion that you didn't really ask for ;) Happy travels!

september 2005, we took my then 7 month old and my 3 year old on a plane. The kids have to be taken out of the stroller and the stroller has to actually go through the xray machiene. Before you board the plane we had to get some tag for our stroller. You then leave the stroller right outside the plane and when you come off the plane it's there waiting for you.

Hope this helps.

I think you'll just push it through the metal detector and they will probably search it on the other side. If it doesn't fit through the x-ray machine, they won't make you disasemble it. If you have concerning questions you can always call the airport for information.

Don't worry, it will fit through the x-ray. I had one of those strollers and never had a problem.

Our travel system fit, with some help from the people working there... It never fully recovered, though! If you can, I would check the stroller and take the baby to the terminal in some sort of carrier (Baby Bjorn, sling, something like that). Have fun!

DaVinci,

I brought my stroller on my trip. The airlines will make you take the baby out and fold it up. I also had the Graco Travel system and it fit through the x-ray machine. It's just a little bit of a hassel because you have to take the baby out of that and the car seat part of it. I flew Southwest Airlines if that helps at all.
Godd Luck

I am a former flight attendant and I will tell you that your travel systen WILL fit through the X-ray. However, it will not fit on the plane, so it will be checked as you walk onto the aircraft. However, at your destination, it will be brought back to the aircraft door for you as you exit. In all my years of flying I have never seen a stroller come back damaged or lost when it was "gate checked" so you can be confident in this system and not have to worry about it!
Happy Flying!

they ARE big, but they FIT! i have one of the biggest Graco strollers (same one: has the infant carrier/car seat that can go in it) and while it is a pain to get on the X-ray Machine, it DOES fit....
THE KEY TO THIS IS TO TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN SO THAT THE WHEELS ARE FACING UP!
Otherwise it will not fit...good luck!

Our family just got back from Puerto Vallarta yesterday. While the stroller (Graco travel system without the infant seat) fit in the xray machines at the airports at O'Hare and Puerta Vallarta, it did not fit in the xray machine in Dallas where we had a connecting flight. (We had to go through security again there because of Immigration and Customs but you wouldn't have to do so for a connecting flight if all flights are domestic.) We had the same result with the regular size car seat. It's the luck of the draw in the size of xray machine you'll get, but it didn't matter for us. When it didn't fit, they manually looked it over with a wand, etc. The security in all of the airports were really nice to us (because of the baby, I think :) I just recommend giving yourself enough time before your flight to get through security because of these instances.

I have a big Graco stroller and we ALWAYS bring it to the airport. You will have to fold it and it should fit in the X-ray machine. Then when you get to the gate, tell them that you need a stroller pass. They will put a tag on the stroller and you can put your child in the stroller all the way through the tunnel and up to the plane. Then you fold it again and they will put it with the luggage. By the time you get off the plane, it will be waiting for you right outside the plane. I hope that helps. Happy travels!

As a former airline employee, I can tell you that they will lift the templates for strollers so don't worry about it!

I have taken my stroller (also a big travel system) all the way to the gate. I can't remember for sure but I think it does fit when you close it. Either way I KNOW I had mine so we got it through somehow without disassembling it. You will be just fine. Take it and don't even worry about it...it'll work.

Like other posters said, it will fit through the x-ray machine. Watch out for the airlines damaging your stroller, though. We gate checked ours on our way home from a trip and when we got it back at O'Hare, the wheels were broken. Thankfully we were at the end of our trip, but it has never been able to be repaired. I was able to get a $50 voucher from United on a future trip, but they make you sign a waiver when you gate-check anything and it does NOT cover damage to wheels.

We took our daughter to CA last year (while she was still in the carrier). We had the Graco Travel System at the time. I honestly don't remember if we had to put it on the conveyor thing or if they just wanded it, but at any rate, it made it through security just fine! Have a great trip!
