My 20 month old son has an odd rash. It is only on the groin area (actually the 'pubic' area). There is nothing on his bottom just there. I think it probably itches him as well, he is constantly rubbing it with a washcloth during bathtime. I have been keeping the area as dry as possible. I have also been using a yeast cream 2x a day ... aquaphor and buttpaste the other times. It just doesn't seem to be going away. He is never in a wet diaper. It actually looks pretty good in the mornings when I change him, but worsens during the day. I am stumped. Any ideas?
I have taken him to the pediatrician. That's who gave me the yeast cream. It's just not getting much better. (Like I expected)
Thanks all for the advice. I have taken him to the pediatrician .. they prescribed him some Nystatin, but I thought it would've gone away by now. It's been about a week since I started using the cream. Maybe it just needs some more time. I take him tomorrow to get his Hep vaccine, I'll just have her take a look.
Thanks again.

I hadn't thought of this until now, but I gave my 2 year old grandaughter some orange juice and she broke out in much the way you describe. She would also cry when she went to the potty. She was potty trained, so the rash was definately from the acid. My daughter confirmed when she saw the rash, that Cheyenne couldn't handle orange juice.

Hi Amy,
I just went through this with my son except I let it go too long and it was breaking his skin open because it was flaky and cracking. Come to find out he is allergic to the diapers. Even though I used the same diapers since birth and never had a problem until a few months ago. His skin got really red in that area and would break open and itch really bad. I thought maybe it was the bile in his poop being to acidic but he was allergic to pampers diapers. We went and bought him the white cloud brand at walmart because it is hypoallergenic and it cleared right up. You could tell the difference over night. So you might just want to buy a small pack and try that to see if that is what it is before you take him to the doctor. They perscribed a cream that was like $200.00 to try to help this rash and all it took was a pack of $9.00 diapers. So my advice is to try the diapers first and see if that helps. It is not that uncommon that babies are allergic to the diapers. If I only knew that before all the trips to the doctor and all the creams!
Good luck!
J.
By the way, If it is not around the anus then it is probably not a yeast infection. The cream mentioned above is what they would perscribe for a yeast infection.
Hope this helps!

Hi Amy
I think instead of guessing you should take him to the doctor this is why they go to school for many years. All the things that you are trying could be making it worst. Just my opinion.
Good Luck

I haven't had that problem, but someone I work with had bad problems with diaper rash that would do just like you are describing and never go away. She was told to go to MedCap pharmacy and buy some probiotic (over the counter) and rub some on there. She said it was like a miracle and cleared up very quickly. Prior to that, she had tried EVERYTHING and that was all that worked, so you may want to try it...

ALL my kids did this. i had to stop all fruit, fruit juices, fruit flavored anything until they were potty trained. Some kids can't handle the acid on their skin. only bananas and give him a yogurt everyday.

Go to your pediatrician, or a dermatologist. That's what they're there for.

Hi Amy,
Put some baking soda in his bath- that helps my little one. And I have to agree with the other mom here on the Flanders Ointment. By far the best, hands-down. Here in Raleigh, you can only get it at Kerr Drugs.
It could be a fungal infection (jock itch). If it is something like jock itch, it is mildly contagious. Make sure you use a new towel with him everyday until it clears up!

Believe it or not, some babies are allergic to dye used in disposables. You may want to try changing your diapers. I know Pampers use a lot of dye, but other brands don't use so much. Consider a generic brand like Walgreen's or CVS that seem to use fewer dyes. Other things to consider are allergies that he is consuming. Most common examples being wheat or dairy. Although he may not have a severe reaction (hives, breathing, vomiting) this maybe his body's way of saying something is upsetting his insides.

I went through this with both both of my girls a month ago. Probably is a yeast, atleast it sounds like it. This is what the DR told me. If he likes the bath trying put baking soda in and letting him sit for 20 mintutes. If you can do this a couple times a day it works better. Also keep bubbles and such out of his tub. That can add to irritation. If he likes to play in tub let him have play time and then get him out as soon as you wash so he isn't sitting in the water. Not sure what in the soap can make the irritation worse. It has worked for us.

Dear Amy
It sounds like he might be reacting to the diaper in that area.
I feel these new diapers they have on the market cause a dryness. And he might be getting to hot there. Try keeping him cool there. let him wear a loose diaper there. It might be too tight there and the air is not getting in to cool him off.
I hope I gave you some idea.

Is it small dots? It sounds like yeast. I would keep up with the yeast cream and you may find you need something stronger.

Hi A.,
My name is M.. I have 3 daughters: twins aged 24 y.o and my youngest is 15. I also have a 2 y.o. granddaughter who happend to hae to very same ailment when she was about 18 months. It is probably a yeast infection. My oldest twin had it when she was an infant and needless to say I did all of the wrong things at first. You should confirm it first with your pediatrician, but you should stop IMMEDIATELY with the buttpaste. Nystatin cream is what you should use, but I think you need a prescription for it. It does itch like crazy! Poor baby :o(. I hope this helps. Good Luck and God Bless!!

Amy - My son struggled with a rash as well. Despite all the creams, etc., we could not get rid of it. When my daughter was a baby, she had a really bad yeast infection, even prescription meds did not work. My pediatrician recommended something called Genetian Violet. You can buy it over the counter, and it comes in a small bottle similar to iodine. I purchased mine at our pharmacy. Just apply it to the rash with the applicator provided or a q-tip. But, be VERY careful, it is violet just like the name and will stain anything it touches. His skin will be purple for several days, but don't worry, it will go away. Hope this helps!

Amy,
Go get some hydrocortizone 1/2% cream. That will help with the itching and should help it to go away. You can put this on 3-4 times a day and if it is eczema or a heat rash, it should go away in a day or two. If not, get to the doctor.

Hey Amy!
I am not familiar with yeast rashes, but if it really is just diaper rash, try desitin overnight cream. It really works wonders, but it has to be the overnight one which is thicker than the regular one. Hope it gets better soon!

It may be a yeast rash, and you then would need Lotriman (sp?) or similar cream. Check with the pediatrician.

Try Desitin ointment. It has always been the best cure-all for every rash I've seen "down-there" on young & old alike, unless it is a true yeast or bacterial infection.

It could be a heat rash, or eczema or even from a food allergy. Try letting him go in just diaper with no pants some to keep him cool, don't over dress at night, and take cooler baths not hot to see if heat rash. If it isn't better I would ask a doctor.

My children had sensitive skin and got diaper rash easily. Try soaking him in the bathtub or sink when you change his diaper. Then put on a diaper rash cream. I preferred Flanders Buttocks Ointment. My sister in law who worked in neonatal intensive care at Vandy suggested that one and it seemed to work the best. If the diaper rash creams and soaking in the tub are not working it is time to take your little one to the pediatrician.

I would try the baby formula of Gold Bond powder. If you can't get to the store right away, try using a mixture of baking soda and cornstarch.

I'd see the pediatrician. My son had a terrible yeast infection and no over-the-counter diaper cream worked (although Weldela has been the best I've found for normal diaper rash). The pediatrician prescribed yeast infection ointment (prescription) and we had to keep using it for quite some time before the infection entirely went away (I mean like a month...every diaper change + change diapers whenever there's any moisture at all). She told us that would be the case. Keep applying the cream even if you can barely see the rash, otherwise it will come back in force. (I made this mistake and had to use the cream extra long.)
