Wierd blisters/Breakout in Diaper Area

Good Morning all,

My 17 month old never had any type of diaper rash and all of a sudden (say the last weeks or so) she has these breakouts. They look like small blisters to me, just not normal. The seem to come up after she goes #2 and if you dont get it off her the second, i mean the second she is done she breaks out in the front?? So i said ok, started using the diaper rash creams and thought about what is new that we introduced.

1) We started giving her a bath in her own bathroom now and not showering with mommy. So i thought it was what we used to clean the tub, so i made sure not to use anything and just give it a good cleaning with the regular soapy washcloth. Then i thought maybe it was the washcloths, because that bathroom has a separate set from the master and thought maybe it was the detergent they were washed in, because i could not remember when i washed them last, since no one uses that bath to shower or anything. So i re washed everything.
2) We started drinking a lil Almond milk, so i stopped that even though i think she only had it 2 or 3 times. Then i realized DUH i need to stop drinking it too since i am BF'ing. So we cut that out, even though she never showed signs of reactions to nuts before ( she has eaten Peanut butter and loves Nutella)
3) Maybe it is the diaper, So i switched a few days from the huggies lil movers to the old ones she used to use, the walmart brand and still break outs.
4) Not enough water?? She drinks like 3 sippy cups of milk a day and maybe 2 of just water and maybe a sippy or 2 of a light extremely watered down juice. So i increased her water.

Not sure what is causing this, She has a dr visit on the 26ths of April and i am like can this wait that long. It gets better but then all of a sudden it is there again and i just cant figure it out!

Have you any suggestions?
I am thinking of doing away with all the diapers and going the cloth route or maybe the cloth training pants!!

What can I do next?

Mylanta helps to heal diaper rash. It is an old wives' tale, but I learned about it through a pediatrician who used it on her own child.

It sounds like what our kids have dealt with several times.

Sometimes, depending on the foods they eat, being sick, etc. the pH of their stools changes and affects their bottoms when they poop. That's the easiest way to say it.

Our kids have both had diaper rash so bad that they blistered and bled.

You should call your pediatrician and get their advice - don't wait until the appointment. They should have a nurse's triage line and several emergency appointments available each day to deal with acute situations such as this.

If it's fungal (which it may be from what you're saying), it will require a different treatment than if it's bacterial.

In the end, we had to have a diaper ointment (Rx) compounded by the pharmacy that included an antibacterial component, an antifungal component, antihistamine component and an anti-inflammatory component.

Worked like a charm. Well worth the copay!

Good luck!

J.,
I am not sure about the cause, but I think I know what would help.
Shaklee makes an organic diaper rash ointment. You can find it at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife
Moms who have used it have said it worked when all else failed.
Their nontoxic laundry products may also help.

Hi J.,
I don't know what is causing it, but I wouldn't wait to take her to the doctor. Because they are blisters, they can become open sores. In the diaper area, these can become infected very easily. Just take her to be on the safe side! Hope it gets better soon!

My daughter got something similar once and her grandmother who is an RN advised me it could be from exposure to the urea in her urine. I made sure to change her wet diapers as quickly as possible and washed her with a wet wascloth and a hypoallergenic wet wipe. I used aveeno diaper crea
during the day and powder at night and it cleared up in about three days. I also noticed that her backside and front turn red almost instantly any time she had oranges, pineapple, or lemon as fruit or in juices-even watered down, or if I ate/drank a lot of it. We eliminated that from our diet and she has not had any redness or a blister since. Hopefully some of this will help but you should see your doctor anyway if it gets worse and doesn't begin to clear in a day or so. You don't want it to get infected. Hope your sweetie feels better soon :)

Could be yeast. Depending on where at on her body it is growing, it could also be staph. We've dealt with both :( Yeast tends to grow in the creases...the folds between the "hoo hoo" and her legs, the inner folds of the vulva area, the butt crack. Staph is usually isolated to the outer, more exposed areas. Yeast has red and raised bumps that almost look like a small case of acne. Staph is just red and raw and very irritated, and possibly a bit raised. Either on needs to be treated with Rx medication. Check with your pediatrician. Many will just call something in.

If it's yeast Lotrimin will help pretty quickly so I would try that first. Giving her culturelle or similar will help bring the Ph of her poop in line so that if it is acidic it won't irritate so much. Don't make dramatic changes to diapers and diet etc. until you have checked out the quick fixes.

I would not wait, go and see your ped right away. The little boy I babysit for had some issues like that, Little pimple like bumps, that were hot to the touch, He had had them off an on since he was born. turned out one got infected, and he ended up with a staff infection, and had to have surgery. I would just get it checked asap. Not trying to scare you, Just have your ped look at it.

Google hand, foot, & mouth disease. Then ask dr to fit your child in before April 26. There is nothing the dr can do about it bc it is a viral illness that must run its course. But if I remember correctly, it is contagious & needs to be properly diagnosed.

Good luck.

I was going to tell you it maybe was a yeast infection. I just went through trying to figure out what my two babies had. Normally the diaper cream I use cleans up a rash in two days, but it wasn't helping with the rash they got. I changed to chlorine free diapers thinking my kids were allergic to the regular diapers, I stopped giving them certain foods and nothing helped. Well another woman on her had a rash she couldn't get rid of on her baby and some mother's told her it could be a yeast infection. They gave several different remedies and creams to try on the baby. I got an anti-fungal cream and sure enough it started clearing up their diaper rash and I was so happy. Thank God for the ladies on here and their good advice !
