Have you explored food allergies or possibly acid reflux?
Dear moms:
I have a 19 month old who has vomitted at night since he was a baby. I don't know what causes this or how to make it stop. I've discussed it with his pediatrician and have even gotten a second opinion but the doctors don't seem too preoccupied with it because he is developing normally and is steadily gaining/growing.
He doesn't vomit after every meal, and it doesn't happen every day - but it does happen at least once a week. It mostly happens at night while he's about to fall asleep or when he's already in a deep sleep. For example, last night he woke up practically choking. His vomit was coming up into his throat and I heard him gagging, then he proceeded to vomit. Usually we get a warning, he will start coughing first then he will vomit, but last night it just came out with no warning.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?? Please give me a clue as to what is going on and if I should be more vocal when I speak with my son's pediatrician.

Good idea Amy. I brought up allergies and drainage because I have that and someone flagged me. TMI I suppose but it is certainly worth checking out along with the reflux.

sounds like reflux, which is more like spit-up (food comes back up the esophagus). Of course, I don't know, but if it is reflux it can be treated. You may want to consult with an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist. I highly recommend Dr. Tim Trone at Medical City or his partner Dr. Hung. They work with children that have reflux all the time. You can try a few things, such as making sure he burps well, keeping him upright for at least 20 minutes after each meal. Since it happens a lot at night, try limiting his intake for a period of time before bedtime (experiment with different amounts of time). It could be a food allergy, although the fact it happens mostly at night sounds more like reflux. Reflux can be treated with meds, diet change, etc.
Since someone already mentioned acid reflux (which they can prescribe medications to help treat that - I'm surprised the pediatrician hasn't explored this already) ....
Does your son have a coughing fit and then it's followed with vomit? If there are coughing fits -- also explore if he might have allergies. My son has seasonal allergies - which we take Allegra 2x a day for .... sometimes the allergen in the air is so high (Cedar/Elm) that nothing helps and he still comes down with a coughing fit mostly at night because that's when the phelgm pools in this throat and nasal cavity -- and he might vomit up the mucous. But that only happens once in a blue moon. His allergy medicine keeps him healthy --- but if I forget a dosage or 2 --- his eyes start getting irritated and red; and he keeps rubbing them.
Definitely bring this issue up by calling your doctor's nurse first -- they might be able to help you over the phone -- and they might have you come in after that or just call in a Rx for you.
