Ok Tuesday night my middle child was coughing and I went to check on him and I gave him some cough medicine. He was scratchng his back/stomach like crazy turned light on and he was covered pretty head to toe in hives/rash its raised. Put itch on him and gave him Bendryl. The next morn I took him to the PED. NIce dr but not really any help. The dr recommended a allergist. Left message for allegist. Ok now its 48 hrs later from his severe rash. I go in his room again because he is coughing and again I look at his body and he is covered in a rash. Its more severe on his stomach I am holding him on my lap to prevent him from scratching it.
I don't think its my laudry detergent but tomorow going to store to get different laundry detergent.
I know I just wrote this on Tuesday evening but any suggestions. Thanks.

What can I do next?

sounds like you need to go to the er. allergies induce asthma and one sign of asthma is coughing. get something until you can get into allergist. you don't want to mess around if its asthma. the rash I think is allergies too. probably a food allergy.

Has he been sick lately? Has he eaten anything different lately? I ask because there is different types of hives.

Some that are raised and thick are often thought to be contact. They aren't always and it matters. I would call the allergist AGAIN. They can at least rule out allergies before he has a reaction.

Why is he coughing? Is he sick or has he been sick? My close friend is an allergist, she tells me that there are MULTIPLE symptoms for allergies, and there is a type of hive you can have at the end of a virus.

Did you change ANY detergent, etc.? Have you taken him to the dry cleaner?

You can take him to the ER and they will give him an epi shot and will check his ears and the rash. Take a picture of the rash!!! Sometimes when it is a food allergy, the ears itching can be the beginning warning to anaphalactic (sp) shock.

I have contact allergies...I don't handle anything with formaldehyde well. Which rules out just about ALL cleansers.

My child had a viral rash for a period of 3 months every time her temp was elevated. We even w.nt as far a s a skin biopsy to confirm. I would ask your doc about this. Unfortunately you can treat the fever but sometimes as in our case the rash didn't respond to medication. Hang in there!

I really am not the type to overreact to health concerns with my child, but I know too many friends and family members who have children with food allergies. If the hives are gone, then try to schedule an appointment with an allergist. I would start keeping a journal of exactly what your child is eating and then note if and when he has any reaction (coughing, itching, hives). My nephew had an allergic reaction to something he ate and my sister rushed him to the ER with coughing that just didn't seem to stop and then a body rash. He needed epinephrine immediately and she was lucky she got him there when she did. I'm not trying to freak you out, I just wouldn't mess around if it happens again. Good luck!!

You can try giving zyrtec for a few days and use benedryl also when it flares up. Call and try to get an appt with the allergist again just keep in mind that if he is going to be tested he cannot take any allergy medicine for at least 48 hrs before our allergist has us take the boys off for a full week because they take it year round.

The fact that the rash started after you gave him cough medicine makes me wonder if it's an allergic reaction to the medication. Stop giving him that medication and see if it improves (it will take several days to get better). If it is an allergic you don't want to keep giving him the meds because repeated exposure can make the reaction worse. It could also be related to his illness like some other people suggested, but just to be safe I would avoid the medication for a while.

It sounds like hives which can be caused by a virus. I wouldn't bother with the allergist. My daughter got them very badly once and they never did find out what caused them. The best thing we found was zyrtec which is OTC now. They have a children's version. It works so much better than benedryl.

Absolutly agree with Childrens Zyrtec. LOVED IT. I do not like Benedryl.
My kids got hives too like that......never could figure it out as to why they got them. It stayed off and on for a week and then gone.

I would recommend taking a picture of this rash so when he does finally get an appt with the allergiest they can see exactly what the rash looked like. Chances are the rash is just a reaction to him being sick. My son gets this from time to time and it usually lasts for about 3 days or so each time. Never any fever, either. Our allergist recommended Zyrtec also, which seems to work much better than benadryl. In the mean time use hydrcortisone cream to help with immediate itching.

how old is your son? it sounds like it may be a food allergy if it's off and on (that's what happened to my son). is there anything that he ate both days that may be the issue? def see an allergist. they will be able to test and see.

Sounds to me like "prickly heat" or "heat rash". I don't know if there is a real name for it, but its what my mom & I call it. My body doesn't seem to sweat as easily as other peoples. If I get hot quickly & I'm in clothing that doesn't breathe well, then I break out into a very itchy rash. It goes away in a few hours. Taking a shower (not too hot) also helps. I've never used benedryll for it b/c its not an allergy. I'm not sure whether it would be useful or not. This also happens to me when I'm outside in the cold & doing an activity.
Since its happening at night I would guess that he is over dressed for bedtime. The footed pjs are the worst. Most are made of 100% polyester, which doesn't breathe. Switch him to 100% cotton pjs. If his feet are cold, put socks on him. (I highly recommend wool socks. Smartwool makes socks for kids. Wool is much more breathable than cotton & smartwool doesn't itch.) If possible buy him a down comforter, a really good, light to medium weight down comforter can be used year round. Down is very good at helping to regulate temperature. Last year I bought a twin size down comforter from kohls for about $30 (on sale).
I have never bothered going to a doctor for this b/c most of the time I can manage it. I know how to dress to avoid it most of the time. So, all advice I am giving is from personal experience. I have no idea if there is anything a doctor could do to help.
