Why Is My Hair Stringy?

I am 40 years old and have thin, basically straight hair. There is some natural wave to it, but not much. My hair can look nice after a shower and blow dry, but by the afternoon it looks horrible. It's kinda of gathers into groups and looks stringy. If you look at the back of my head, a group of hair will get together, then there is a space, and another group will get together and so on. It makes it look like I don't comb my hair at all.

Can someone direct me to a product or reason why my hair does this? Is it the dry air or something? It feels like it's almost clinging to my neck by the time I get home.

What can I do next?

I'm a stylist. Sounds like your natural wave pattern in the back is grouping your very loose curls together as the day progresses, could be caused by sweat, oil production, or like Janelle suggested too heavy of a conditioner or not fully getting it rinsed out.

I would use a very lightweight volumizing shampoo/conditioner and mouse since your hair is so fine. Body Double by Sebastien works wonders, it's expensive but very concentrated so you only need to use a little bit at a time.

I've never used, but heard good things about kms Flatout for smoothing fine and thin hair:

You can velcro roller your hair to get some volume and I always bring a comb or soft bristled brush when I go out to touch up my hair (mine tends to twist and get tangly too!). An amazing brush that really is good for smoothing and high shine is called a denman. But most natural brist;e brushes will have a similar effect.

i think either too much conditioner, not rinsing it out enough, or wrong conditioner. or are you using other products that cause build up, a vinegar/ water rinse removes build up, as does beer lol, and makes your hair soft and shiny.

My hair is jacked up too. Who out there knows the best brush and comb to use for fine hair? Seems like mine just rips my hair out most of the time while blow drying. I've used every product under the sun and my hair is still crazy. It is what it is. I like winter so I can wear knit hats of different sorts ;)
Fine hair is very hard to manage. Mine looks good for about an hour and then it's all downhill from there.... so I know how ya feel.

I have fine, slightly wavy/straight hair. When my hair gets too long, it gets really stringy. I try to keep it shoulder length at the longest- anything longer and it's all over the place and unmanageable.
Also, I like the Pantene Fine hair volumizer/root lifter gel. If you blow out your hair, then you have to try it - but don't overdo it!! It's the only thing I have found lately that will keep some volume at the roots. And only condition the ends of your hair with about a quarter size of conditioner. Conditioning the scalp causes my hair to fly away and look like you mentioned. Hope this helps.

Maybe you are using too much conditioner. try a lightweight leave in liquid conditioner like infusium. Your hair may just be the kind of hair you need to brush several times a day too!

It could be the shampoo/cond, styling producst, too much oil production, age and hormones.. could also be the winter and the dry air and static. I have fine hair and the static is just terrible in the winter.Could also be the way your hair is cut, maybe a new style would also help. I would switch up your shampoo/cond and styling products. If that doesnt help, I would talk to your dr if you are concerned!!
Ps.. I am a licensed cosmetologist. Check out AVEDA products, they are the best!!!!
