Why Does My Head Itch? and No, It's Not Lice...

For the last three or four weeks, my head itches like crazy. I've never had an itchy head in my life. It itches to the point of pain...but I can't figure anything wrong with it. I don't have lice (never have) or dandruff, haven't switched shampoo or mousse or laundry detergent. I wash and condition my hair every day, but I always have. I just don't get it.

Also, it seems to get worse when I go outside. I've also had an itchy neck, and spots on my arms. I don't have eczema or anything else noticeable...what could this be?

And just in case...this is a real question. I saw some goofy questions earlier, but I assure you, this is real (and really, really frustrating.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions!! I'm going to try/research now, so thanks, ladies. :) Also, someone said "Things that make you go hmm" which makes me think of that song...early 90s, was it? Things that make you go mmm....things that make you go mmm mmm mmm....who sang it?

I have hypothyroid and it makes my head itch. Before I was diagnosed, my head itched like crazy. I'd go the the doctor and have them look for lice. I didn't have lice. But when I was diagnosed and got on the right meds, it went away. Now sometimes if my meds need adjusting, my head will itch along with my forehead. I have no idea if that's helpful or if I'm the only one in the world who has that symptom with hypothyroid, but I thought I'd throw that out there. Good luck, I know how miserable it is.

it's this darn heat. perhaps you're sweating more and it's clogging your hair pores? I seem to get an itchier head in the summertime than other times of the year too.

My head gets that way sometimes too when I exercise or if I am outside for a long period of time. My hair is SUPER thick and makes my hair sweat which can cause me to itch which in turn causes it to even make a sore on my head. My hairdresser suggested to make sure you get ALL the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair. Thick hair is really really hard to get all the stuff out. Good luck with the itch!

hhhmmm...you are in a humid place....

it could be the beginnings of dandruff...change in your diet and hormones...

I know this sounds funky - but you could be drying your scalp out by washing it every day - try washing your hair EVERY OTHER day and see if that makes a difference.

I am wondering if you have had an allergic reaction to something.....

things that make you go hmmm...sorry I'm not being more help to you!!

Like Jamie, I have a hypothyroid condition also, and my head itched like crazy before I was diagnosed/ taking meds for it. I had overall dry skin along with several other symptoms. You may want to google hypothyroid symptoms and see if any of the other symptoms also apply to you - if so, it's worth looking into with your doctor.

I hope you find some relief soon!

My Mom has some spots on her neck, arms and they are itchy. They get worse in the sun. She doesnt have an itchy head but it was very aggrivating to her. She went to the dermatologist and he gave her a shot and some cream for her skin. It got alot better. Not sure what exactly it was but it sounds very similar. Moms got to where it was breaking out on her legs too.

I've had this, too. Some suggestions:

1. Consider installing a chlorine filter on your shower

2. Take a fish oil (Omega 3 fatty acid) supplement

3. Drink a lot of water

Just a place to start. If it continues, consider asking your dr about it.

Do you color your hair? I know if I use certain hair color brands my head itches like crazy for weeks. If the coloring gets on my forehead or my neck, it leaves an oily film that causes breakouts on my skin.

I had something like that happen. I had been using a shampoo for ages without problem. Turns out they changed the formula or some ingredients and I was allergic to it from that time on. I had to change shampoos. It's worth a look maybe.

The woman my mom goes to for her hair /cuts/ dye jobs / styling says that the best way to strip your hair is by taking just a little baking powder and mixing it with your normal shampoo...maybe you just have a build up of product or something? My daughter has eczema badly ( even on her scalp) tea tree oil seems to have a very soothing affect on her scalp maybe look for some shampoo that has tea tree oil in it, or by some and mix it in yourself?
I am sorry, itchy scalp is no fun.

Try using a vinegar rinse. Mix about 1/2 cup in a large plastic cup of water. Wet your hair and then pour the vinegar rinse on your head. Massage in and let it sit on your hair for a few minutes. Then wash like normal. It helps when my head is itchy. I figured out I am allergic to some styling products.
