Why does my breastfed baby have green poop?

My daughter is 2 months old and is exclusively breastfed. For the last 24 hours or so her poops have been green! Neither of my sons ever had green poo, and I am wondering if this is normal? Is it something I ate? The consistency of the poo is the same as always (seedy - soft), the color is usually yellow, not green.

We have her 2 month appointment tomorrow, but was curious what you other breastfeeding mom's have experienced. I BF my two boys for over a year each and never saw green before!

Thanks,

Jessica

Summary

"Green stools and gassiness in an otherwise healthy breastfed baby are often caused by a foremilk/hind milk imbalance. To help remedy this situation, allow your baby to control the feed. When nursing, let your little one come off the first breast on his own, relaxed and satisfied. If problem persists, contact your health professional.

So What Happened?

We had our appointment this a.m. She assured me that it was fine. Thanks everyone.

My friends baby did that too. She googled it and found that it can come from mothers who over produce milk. Her little guy was getting too much of the foremilk and not enough of the hind milk. So she switched to just feeding him from one side at a time and his poo went back to the seedy color. You could google it too and read about it. Isn't it funny how when you have kids how much you talk about poo! :)

I echo the "totally normal". My son's alternated between yellow, green, and lovely mix of the two! ;-)

My daughter's poop was also green at times. She was exclusively breastfed also and the doctor said it was normal.

I had a similar experience w/my second, and was also very surprised! Sometimes baby diarrhea is green, if they have a cold it can be green and mucousy, if they are sensitive to something you have eaten it can be green. But the color is not the defining symptom of any of these things. (Diarrhea is frequency, cold - well, that's obvious, and food sensitivity will bring serious gas and discomfort, possibly rashes.) My pediatrician said "you'll see a whole rainbow in your baby's diapers in the first few months." The only colors of poop they worry about are black, white and red. Any other shade is considered normal.

The same thing happened to my son at 4 months. He ended up being allergic to dairy. So I had to completely cut dairy out of my diet since I was breastfeeding. Keep in mind that dairy is in so many things so you really have to be careful if that is the issue.
That could be what is going on, but I would contact your doctor just to confirm.
