My son is three months. He has lots of white spots inside his mouth. I have been taking him to sever pediatritions and they told me to give him nystatin but it didn't help him much, after that I was told to use gentian violet at first it helped but after I stoped using it everything came back and actually got even worse. I'm cleaning his mouth constantly and boiling all his bottles and pesifires after each use for twenty minutes but it doesn't help also. Please help us.

What can I do next?

My first guess is that you are not using the nystatin or gentian violet long enough. Even when the thrush has cleared up, to the naked eye, it is still there. Try one of the remedies again and continue to use it for 3 days after you can no longer see any visual evidence of the thrush.
Also, try to limit how long he is keeping a bottle in his mouth when he is not actually drinking. This just increase the possibility of reinfection. I would also be tempted to throw out all of his pacifiers and start over again, there are just too many little crevices where the bacteria can hid in those!!

I am guessing he has trush. it is a yeast infection. it must be treated with nystatin? you should have him treated before it goes thru his little body and makes his bum red as well. :)

My little guy had this too. Make sure that you clean yourself and put it on your breasts as well as in his mouth (if you're breastfeeding) and you have to use it for 3 weeks (read the instructions on the bottle). It takes a long time but it will eventually go away!! Good luck!

Yes. Definently Thrush. Make sure you are using the prescriptions until they are gone. You might also want to try getting an infant toothbrush and brushing his mouth out after feedings as well. Somehow bacteria is getting inside of his mouth and staying there. If you bleach clean the toys and stuff make sure to rinse them VERY well! Throwing out all old pacifiers and toys r blankets that he chews on is a good idea too. The violet that you used--prob should have kept using it b/c even though it is gone from sight, it isnt out of his system.

Just a quick note - Antibiotics do not cure thrush in fact they can make it worse by killing off 'good bacteria.' Thrush is a yeast, not a bacteria.
When my son had thrush his pediatrician advised us to gently scrub the inside of his mouth with a wash cloth (or q-tip, or clean finger, etc) before applying the medication. Thrush develops a waxy coating that can keep medication from sinking in, this helps to break up that coating allowing the medication to penetrate. You can also ask your pediatrician about getting Diflucan, with is a pill and may be easier to administer. Use all medications as directed and wash/discard any pacifiers, bottle nipples and toys that go in his mouth.

it sounds like thrush. I would take him back to the doctor they should be giving you an antibiotic. you need to either boil all nipples and pacifiers or toss them and get new.

Kristina,

This sounds like thrush as many of the other mamas have already said. We were going through the same thing when my son was 2 mo. The ONLY thing that worked (and we tried everything) was Diflucan (brand name is Fluconazole). This is NOT and antibiotic - it is an antifungal. Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth and yeast is a fungus so you need an antifungal. After we finally tried the Diflucan, it worked in just two doses.

Also, if you are breast feeding, you need treatment also as many of the mamas already suggested. Call your OB for a special cream combo of antifungal and steriod - it is the fastest acting but you must wipe off excess before breast feeding.

For long term I found that grapefruit seed extract pills sold at the health food store worked wonders! I was a total skeptic but it really works. Grapefruit seed (not grape seed be sure that you get grapefruit seed) is a natural antifungal. Take one pill a day for the remainder of breast feeding and it should keep thrush at bay.

Good luck! Let us know how you are doing.

Is he in day care? If he is, and you are using the meds like you should, he could be getting it back from other kids. Make sure you bleach (1part bleach to two parts water) all of his toys. You can also bleach nipples and pacifiers. Rinse them good and let them air dry. My guess it that either it is not fully cleared up when you stop the meds or something is contaminated so that is why he is getting it back. Bleaching is way better than just boiling them. Good luck!

has he been on any antibiotics recently and therefore possibly have a yeast issue going on? might any of your bottles or pacifiers have latex or any other item in them that he might be allergic to? what are you constantly cleaning his mouth with? I would speak to the knowledgeable staff either at Henry's or Wholefoods or research naturapath/homeopathic sites for possible natural remedies....
these are just some of the first thoughts/questions that come to mind...
hope you get to the bottom of what is going on..

Could it be thrush or a staph infection? Because of his delicate age you need to be extremely careful as to what you give him. He may also possibly be having an allergic reaction to something.

It's definitely thrush. Make sure you are using the prescription until it's gone. It may look cleared up, but it's probably not. Also, if he has a blanket or anything else he chews on like toys, all those need to cleaned too. If you can, I'd throw them in a little bit of bleach water and then rinse them really well. I'd also throw out all the bottle nipples and pacifiers. It's like a yeast infection, it will just keep coming back. I'd just use one or two nipples until it's all cleared up. You can also get sterilization bags for the microwave. Wash and sterilize after each use until the thrush is cleared up.

A friend of mine ended up throwing out all her bottle nipples and nuks/pacifiers and got new ones. She used a few for while her child still had it and was on meds (as other moms said use it a few days after the symptoms go away because it may still be lurking before it is completely defeated in the blood stream) THEN she had another whole new clean set that she used after the treatment and symptoms were done. Clean ALL the toys you have at home, that stuff can live longer then you think on toys.

Also if he is in daycare I would talk to the daycare center because it could be just floating around there (and check to see how often they wash them toys).

Hope your little guy can defeat it soon :(

I second the visit to Dr. Gordon and/or using probiotics for a least a few months every day. There are specific formulas just for little ones.
Good luck!

You need to get him on Flucanozole which is an oral antibiotic that works! Nystatin doesn't work!! We had thrush/Candida three times in my son's first 6 months. If you are breastfeeding you need to be treated too! Call your OB for a script for you and get your pedi to give your baby an oral anti iotic. Do Not put the nystatin liquid on your breast as it contains sugar and yeast thrive on sugar! If you stick with the nystatin there is a cream you should be using on yourself.
Thrush sucks and it takes a lot of work to be rid of it completely. Wash everything in hot water (sheets, blankets, clothing, toys...)

This is thrush. Which is an overgrowth of yeast. I'm sure he's also getting bad diaper rashes and some abdominal discomfort which usually comes with having thrush. His system just needs some help with Probiotics. I gave it to my son mixed with his milk. You can buy it at any Whole foods. They have a baby formula. I referred to Dr. Jay Gordon website and my accupuncturist who specializes in pediatric accupuncture. Give him the probiotics for atleast 2-3 weeks. Hang in there he will be well soon.

Thrush thrush thrush. He definitely needs antibiotics. Go to another doctor if your doctor isn't complying. Thrush can get worse and it is contagious. If it gets too bad, it will start to affect his eating and sleeping.

Good luck!
