Hi moms! I have a 5 year old who can not figure out which shoe goes on which foot. I've tried teaching him by looking for the longest toe and which shoe will fit that toe. I'm just baffled as to how to teach him. His twin brother picked it up so quick and easy. So, I need your expert advice, please... Thank you

I had one who had trouble picking up on which shoe, which foot. We just put dots on the inside of the shoes and told her that the dots go together. Never had trouble after that!

Hi L.,
I have my son place both shoes side by side on the floor and see how they look. "Do they look right?"

When the shoes aren't lined up correctly (left on left side, right on right side) they just look "wrong."

My girlfriend also did the "dots" on the inside of shoe. Each time you put on shoes, you have to make sure the dots are "kissing". Works like a charm!

My little guy is only 2, but I think this is the method we're going to try too!!

I like the idea of putting an "L" in the left shoe. If your son knows his letters, teach him to make an "L" with his left hand. It will match the "L" in his shoe and it might help him get his shoes on the correct feet. good luck!

A variation of other suggestions.

ok shoes are on his feet, put two little stars or marks of some sort on the sides of the shoes so that the marks kiss when his feet are together.

If he really needs some thing jazzy to help him remember you might be able to find little charm like things that go on the shoe laces, i would just put on thing on his right shoe. You could even make a little shape out of some felt or something and put slits in it so that the lace can pull through. little dinosaur, or basketball.

Have you tried different colored laces? For example, the left shoe could have white laces and the right show red laces. Or, if you prefer, what about labeling one shoe with an "L" for left and the other shoe "R" for right? That worked for a friend of mine.

When my kids are/were at the age where they want to do it themselves but are still getting the shoe on the wrong foot, I bought them character shoes and then told (and constantly reminded for a while) them that the characters go on the outside because they want to see what's going on! They can't see much if they're always looking at themselves on the other shoe :)

It could be that this is his way to get just a llittle more attention from Mom at a busy time of the day. If he goes to school with them on the wrong feet someone will let him know. It might take getting teased to get him to figure it out. I have a pair of shoes that, because of the way they are made, look like they are on the wrong feet and I have gotten comments.

I love the sticker cut in half idea someone already gave. I saw a kid at the park who simply had an "I" (for inside, she explained) on the inside of the arch of each shoe.

With my son I just taught him to put his food on top of each shoe (like standing on them). If it fits, it's the correct foot. If he stood on the wrong shoe, his big toes hung off

Hope this helps.

<laughing> my own son "preferred" the wrong shoe whenever we got new shoes because "they fit BETTER this way". So he may be doing it on purpose.

We had strap shoes, so we just had him think about which way the straps SHOULD pull.

have him put the shoes on the floor show him the bottom of the shoes, with the correct way they fit, them show him his hands fingers up and thumbs out with the right hand on the right shoe and the left hand on the left shoe, the thumb is the inside of the shoe on each side. it may help worth a try anyway.

What worked for me was telling my kids to look at their feet and to notice that the outer part of their feet is straight while the inner part curves. It's the same with shoes. I told them to line them up with their feet if they had trouble telling which shoe went where. Hope this helps!

We let our son pick out character shoes. Then reminded him that he picked out the character, so he should show it off by making sure it was on the outside. The only downside to this is some of the shoes now have the character on both sides!

Does he understand right and left? Maybe mark the inside of the right shoe with a red dot (red is for right)?

i just cut a dinosaur (or whatever) sticker in half and put half inside each shoe. when they are side by side the right way it makes a picture, so simple.

put a "L" in the left shoe with a marker and when he looks at the shoe the "L" is for left!!

why don't you put a sticker in one of the shoes that way he will remember that shoe goes on the left foot or right foot whichever shoe you put the sticker in.

Or you could put a big X with a sharpie or something like that in just one shoe.

I had the same problem with my 4 year old until my mom told me a trick she used to do. I put a dot on the inside edge of each shoe. He now puts on his shoes to make the dots touch.
