I want to start potty training my 15 month old but have no idea which potty is the best to buy. There are so many with all sorts of feature...

Has anyone got a recommendation? Or suggestions on what we need & what to avoid would be great.

Thanks,

R.

I agree with the ring on the toilet - I got the standalone one first and my daughter would sit on it, but it's really gross to clean and she does just as well on the rings. Plus, I found a Sesame Street ring so she much prefers that!

Dear R.,

I agree with the other mom. I love the one that is in a ring shape that sits on the toilet. I also have one that just sits on the floor. I run a daycare and most of my kids use the potty ring. My sister went and spent $30 on the potty chair that makes the flushing sound and talks. My nephew won't even sit on it. But when he comes to my house he uses the ring.

Hi!
It is so great you are starting potty training--I have heard 15-17 months is the best time to start!!

I have to say that I love the Fisher Price potty that looks like a Throne! I do home daycare and am starting potty training a 17 month old and she loves that it makes music when she goes potty! It has also helped me know to praise right away as she goes! The only thing I don't like is it sometimes the sensor is too sensitive and it goes off even if she didn't go. I think when they are little like this a stand alone is good b/c they can get on and off easily. My 11 month old is already following her and sitting on it too!! The top part of this one, like many stand alones, converts to a top for your regular toilet later. I also have a First Years potty in my basement bathroom that is OK too and converts to go on top of the toilet later!
Good Luck!!

I agree with the ring on top of the potty, but some are still not very easy to clean, like the Graco cushy top one...too many crevices. Just a basic easy to clean one is what I prefer. For stand alone pottys, I LOVE the Baby Bjorn simple molded plastic one. It's SOO easy to clean, and my 2 year old son loved it! We started training him a month after his 2nd birthday because he was acting interested. At first he was nervous about sitting on the big potty, but he loved the little potty. We have the once upon a potty video and he loves that video and the potty in it looks similar. The potty is only $9.99 at Babies R Us. I'm all about easy to clean and the basic Bjorn potty definitely is. Nice smooth easy clean surface without all the crevices. Best wishes to you.

I started with a very basic, stand-alone potty that I would keep nearby at all times when my son was training. He would sit on it for long periods of time and watch TV and eventually he figured out what it was for. This saved me having to spend hours in the bathroom with him in the beginning. Once he could feel his body's signals and tell me when he needed to go, we transitioned very quickly to the potty ring that everyone is talking about. The huge advantage of the potty ring is that you simply flush everything down after instead of having to constantly clean and sterilize the stand-alone potty, which is gross. Good luck!
