We have 5 days available at the end of October. We live in Wisconsin. We don't have a ton of money. What would you do for a short vacation that would interest a 6 year old...and was within driving distance of wisconsin?

You did not say where you are in Wisconsin, but I have friends that live just outside of Madison and often take their kids to Chicago - Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Museum of Science and Industry.

Do you live somewhat close to Minniapolis? You can go to the Mall of America! That place is awesome! It has an indoor roller coaster and other kid rides. Movie theaters, mini golf, etc. It has been years, but I loved it when I was there. I think it is great for a 6 year old.

since you are in WI you could do so many local things. Go to http://www.randmcnally.com and do a search for things to do. You could go up to the UP of MI and see the copper mines, the waterfalls and Bear Country.
Or you could head into MN or down to Chicago area. There is a lot to do in these four states.

Chicago is a good place to come for a 6 yr old but not for the Shedd or Museum of S&I if you are on a tight budget. They can be expensive. But, there are things at the end of October since it is around Halloween. You could check out Daley Plaza downtown for the Halloween thing they have--never got around to taking my kids. Or Millenium park is nice to be out and about in. Then the Children's Museum is free on Thursday afternoons/nights (?). Check out Navy Pier's website for more info. There are lots of things to do without spending a lot. There are also other things to do if you will be driving down. The Botanic Garden is free except for parking and an easy drive-except for construction of course-on the expressway.

I'm not sure how far you want to drive but Mall of America in Minnesota might be fun. There is an aquarium, dinosaur museum & amusement park in the mall in addition to all the usual mall stuff. We haven't been there since 2006 but they have built a hotel with a waterpark near the mall since we were there. Most of the hotels had shuttles to the mall. Have fun!

Timberidge in lake Geneva is a really fun, beautiful and inexpensive place, my kids loved it! There are all 1 or 2 rm suites, a huge indoor waterpark and daily family activities.
