I have not been working since my child was born 5 years ago, now my child goes to school full day and I am starting to look for a part time job but there are just not that many out there?
Where do you start? I have tried career builder website and Chicago Tribune and no success, most of the jobs are full time.

So What Happened?

Thank you for everyone for giving me ideas, I will check the craiglist and also check on the possibility of working at my son's school.

I have an only child and when she started K I was lost. I was at her school volunteering so much that the principal asked me to get qualified to substitute teach. I have a degree...she said..you are here so much and the children love you..you might as well get paid for it.

So I have been a substitute teacher at the 1 elementary school since 2000. I work when I want to, most of my jobs are preplanned. I have scaled back this year to focus on our family business but I love going to teach....it is my mental break day when I get to be with the children.

School is a great idea, often they are looking for classroom help, though if you are public school the timing on that isn't great. Check out craigslist under ETC and Part Time. Consider starting your own part time gig, if you do babysitting, mystery shopping, pet sitting, house cleaning on your own you can set your schedule to be available for school activities, etc.

Best of luck!

Susan,
I had a tough time finding something worthwhile and PT when my son was younger. I decided that I wanted flexible hours to work around my family's schedule, as well as to be able to pick when I wanted to work. For me, starting my own business was the right thing because I had this kind of control. It also meant that I was responsible for my own success, but I like knowing that I am working for my family, and in charge of my own destiny, if you will. I sell children's books and do local French Markets, book fairs, teacher's conferences and expo's- very part time. It was a good choice for us, and I am thankful it's been successful for me. I'm about to have our 2nd child, and I like that I can take some time off, then come back to it when I am ready. If you would like more information (I'm just over in Westchester), let me know. You can also visit my website at www.ReadandGrow.com. Barefoot Books is an amazing company- started by two moms who know what it's like to have children to take care of, and that they come first. I'd love to talk to you more about it, if it's something that interests you. :)

Good luck in your search,
T.

I work with a company hiring moms part time to work at home. You can request information at WorkAtHomeUnited.com/JOBS We have an A rating with the BBB and I have been with them for over 5 years now. I love the flexibility to be home with my 2 children and earn reliable income.

Try looking for part-time jobs at her school. Many Moms do that.
Talk to the office staff.. and see what there is. They don't always publicize it.

good luck,
Susan
