Hi friends. My husband and I just celebrated our 10 year anniversary. We had planned to go to Jamaica w/o kids (first time to do that) but just found out we are pregnant! This is hugely ironic b/c we have dealt w/ infertility for 9 years, adopted 2 beautiful kids, and are shocked!! We postponed planning the Jamaica trip but still want to take an in-country trip of some sort. I really want to go further away than Missouri (although I know there are great opportunities there, I feel we can do that anytime). We are talking about the Northeast (Vermont, Maine, Boston, etc) but are open to any suggestions. We are wanting to go at the end of Sept. or early Oct. I want something low-key, relaxing, focus on the 2 of us, a lot of R & R. Anybody out there have any great secrets to share about great places to visit? I really want to come back feelling rejuvinated. In the last year we have moved, started a new job, had a car accident, bought and sold a house, adopted one kid (well he's 18 months now), celebrate anniversary #10, and now found out we are pregnant. I feel I need/deserve this trip so I want it to be great. Thanks for all your help!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I know this is long overdue, but I wanted to let everyone know that we had the best time on our vacation to New Hampshire/Maine. We opted out of going to Boston, too busy, but loved seeing all the fall foliage in northern New Hampshire, the old, quaint towns with pumpkins everywhere, and the beautiful coastal region of southern Maine. Thank you for all of your help and if you ever get the chance to see the fall foliage of New England, take advantage! It was just the kind of vacation we were looking for--kidless ;) relaxing, and just gorgeous.

I am a huge advocate of cruising. You depart from the US, unpack once, are totally pampered while on the ship, and you get to stop at various ports. There is a doctor on board the ship if you're worrying about traveling & being pregnant. Spas, entertainment, lots of delicious foods and plenty of activity or none at all...you choose. You will never get more for your vacation dollar than with a cruise! I have been actively traveling all my life (I'm 51) and we take at least one cruise a year. Royal Caribbean, NCL, Princess, Holland America are all preferable lines to Carnival...I would steer clear of Carnival on a US/Carib cruise.

Whatever you decide, happy anniversary! We are also celebrating #10 in Oct (with a cruise, of course) and are taking our 15 month old adopted daughter with us. This will be her second cruise. Adoption, as you know, has been such a wonderful gift in our lives.

Congrats...that is so exciting! I didn't go there on vacation, it was more of a business trip but Portland, Maine is fantastic! I'm sure there were lots of little bed and breakfasts near the area but everyone was so friendly and nice! The best part was that all the restaurants and shops are owned locally and the food was awesome!!!!! It was relaxing and the scenery was beautiful, I recommend there!

Congrats on the pregnancy! That happened to a friend of mine except they were just confirmed on the adoption when she found out she was pregnant so her 2 kids are like 2 months apart!

These are my 2 favorite places to go on the east coast, but like you would LOVE to be in the northest sometime in the fall.

The Sanctuary on Kiawa Island South Carolina or the Greenbrier in West Virginia, which would be beautiful in the fall.
Both are outstanding hotels/resorts with renowned spas and golf courses, if you golf. And both kinda pricey depeding on the room and what you do.
The Sanctuary is right on the ocean so very relaxing to me.
The ONLY downside in my opinion to the Greenbrier is that they have a very strict dress code for dinner in the dining room.

Have fun.

My husband and I are from the NE, and we know of a bunch of great spot. If you are looking for relaxing, check out Juniper Hill Inn in Windsor, VT. http://www.juniperhillinn.com/

We stayed there for our honeymoon and the owners are the nicest people, I have a number of allergies and the wife tailored the menu for me. We treated ourselves and stayed in room 20, which is in a separate wing from most of the other rooms, and it has a huge claw foot tub that was wonderful to relax in, esp. if you are pregnant. It is near a couple of interesting places, and if you go in late Sept. early Oct. You should be near or at the fall colors.

Wherever you go, tell them about your situation - we told the hotel we stayed at in St. Louis about it being our first 'couple' trip away from the kid and they upgrade us to the presidential suite for two nights. If you want more suggestions for the NE, Pm me, I know of tons of places.

You might try the Newport Rhode Island Area. We flew into Boston, and drove. It is about an hour from air port to Rhode Island, Everything in the area is fairly close in comparison to Kansas. Anyway, there are numerous things to do in Boston, Providence, Newport ( tour the mansions). Just an idea.

That time of year is beautiful at Shakertown at Pleasant Hill in Kentucky. It's a restored Shaker living history village with a beautiful inn with fabulous meals. My husband and I honeymooned there in early September 27 years ago. If you like history there's lots of it in the area which is near Lexington and Frankfort. Mammoth Cave isn't far either, nor Louisville. Southern Indiana is nice, too. It's about a 10 hour drive to that part of Kentucky from the Kansas City area.
