Hi there...my son has just started walking and I want to get him fitted for his first pair of walking shoes. Can anyone recommend a good place to go in the South Bay or Los Angeles/Long Beach area? I'll even go to Orange County. The only place I know of is Stride Rite in Del Amo Mall in Torrance. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the great advice. I decided to go to Stride Rite for the first time to have the shoes fitted properly. They were very good at showing how to check to see if the shoes fit correctly. Now that I have his first pair of sneakers and a good case of sticker-shock, I'll be going to more affordable places for everyday shoes. (Even my Pedi said don't spend a lot on shoes as it doesn't make any difference at this age in their growth and development.)Thanks for your good advice Mamas!

Hi K.,
I do love Target; however, I recommend that, for the first fitting, you go to Stride Rite or Nordstrom and have him fitted by someone who knows what they are doing. Shoes are such an important part of a child's development and are often overlooked; however they affect posture and ability, so....it's worth the extra bucks. Once you get a good feel for his size, you can start shopping Target, etc.
Hope that helps and congrats!
L.

The best shoes for beginning walkers are soft soled ones. Robeez and Pedipeds have the best ones, in my opinion. They're readily available everywhere, especially Robeez. I think you can even get them at Stride Rite, but also at Nordstrom and Babystyle, to name a couple of places.

He shouldn't be walking around a lot in regular sneakers or other stiff soled shoes until later - they're not good for his feet right now.

I've been buying my daughter's shoes at Target. The Circo sneakers are $10. The shoes at Stride Rite are around $40.

She didn't have any problems learning how to walk in the Target shoes - she was fine after 2-3 days.
