Where to Get Ears Pierced

Hello fellow Mothers..
I am starting to look into where to get my daughter's ears pierced. I know that I can go to the mall but I don't feel comfortable with a teenager at Claire's piercing my baby's ears. Does anyone have any other suggestions? When I was a baby our pediatrician pierced my ears. I plan on asking our MD on the next visit but I thought I would ask the Mommies too.

What can I do next?

The Mall shops do not require certification classes for ear piercing, which is why you hear about a lot of trouble with infections after going there. Also they only offer two types of metal, and if there is a problem after they are not going to know how to properly resolve the issue. Piercing parlors, while a little creepy going into, should have their piercers getting these certifications, and are forced by law to provide a more sterile professional environment. They have a lot of metals to choose from and can give educated information on which metals to use to avoid infection. If infection results they also guarantee their work and will work with you to resolve the issue. Also studies have in fact shown that a piercing gun while faster is more painful than a needle. If the pediatrition can't do it in his office I'd personally take her to a professional piercer at a parlor where they also perform body piercings etc....

V., my mom and I looked for alternatives to get her ears re-pierced (trying to avoid Claire's for the reason you stated), but I found out that Claire's has high expectations of their training for ear piercing. I would go to your local Claire's and ask who does the piercing there, how much training she's had...you may be surprised. My mom and I were. In the end we had her ears done there, and she was really happy.

Our pediatrician said he could do it, but he recommended just going to the mall. He said Claire's used the same equipment, but had the benefit of doing them both at the same time. When we went in, we asked for the manager to do it, and she pulled one of the older looking girls to help her. We've had no problems at all with her piercings. She's almost 20 months, and we got them around 9 or 10 months.

I just read an article in Parents magazine about this. They say the best place to get ears pierced is at the pediatrician's office or a dermatologist's office. Or, if you do go to the mall, ask the piercer where they were trained, how long ago and how many piercings they do a day. You should aim for one who has done 3-5 piercings for at least a year.

Hope that helps! It's the latest issue of you want to check it out.

Hi V., I have 2 daughters and they both had their ears pierced at 6 months of age. The pediatrician did it. I forgot what the office charge was, since it is not a medical visit. I want to say it was around $30.00. I don't blame you for not wanting to take them just anywhere. Good luck. She'll look great! C

The people at Clarie's in my opinion are more trained than the ones at the doctors office, simply beacuse they pierce more ears a day. I took my daughter there when she was 4 months and she is now almost 3 and we had no problems. The manager did it and another person so they could do it at the same time. I have an almost 4 month old daughter and I will be getting hers done there as well. We go to the Claire's at the HIP.

I got my ears pierced as a child at the pediatrician's office. never had a problem with infections, but they are uneven. I took my daughter to Claire's (my OB/Gyn recommended it) at 3 1/2 months. The manager did the piercing, and they came out great. I gave her some Tylenol beforehand, and used Orajel to numb her earlobes a little right before they did it. She cried more because I was holding her so tightly-it wasn't bad at all. Just make sure she's already had her tetanus shot.

I would suggest waiting to get them done by the pediatrician. Years ago, I took my little sisters to get them both done at the mall when they were just a few months old, but later on I learned that they don't get properly trained to do piercings.

I have a 3 month old who I will be getting pierced by the doctor during her next appt at 4 months old. I was hoping to get it done earlier, but didn't know that my doctor was going to do it at 2 months until after her appointment. I've been getting a little impatient about taking her to get pierced and have been so tempted to go to the mall, but I have to remind myself that I'd rather have her get it done properly.

Likely the peds office or the dermatologist's. Although Claire's is a professional place, the gun is not sterile so you still have the risk of hepatitis. The doctors office uses a sterile needle each time...unless this has changed at Claire's

Wow I am shoked to see how many people take the babies to get their ears peirced. i can't believe some do it at such a young age. i have heard several nightmares about babies getting horrible infection after getting their ears pierced. My cousins baby was 5 1/2 months old when she took her to her ped's office to get her ears pierced, long, long, long story short, she went through months of infections, and pains, and finally decided to let the holes close on there own. The baby was put on many antibiotics to cure the infections. I find it hard enought to take them to get there shots, I could not imaging doing the ear piercing. I probably feel strong about this just because of thehorrible experience with my cousin, and a couple of other people I know. Really be sure this is what you want to do at this young of an age! Good luck to you.
