Where to Donate Hair

June 29 is the big day to cut off my famously long locks (give me encouragement not to chicken out!!!) I have been growing it out for 3 long, hot years; it is down to my rear. I want to donate to a area charity, but I’ve heard many “charge” their clients for the wigs? Any suggestions on who to donate to? Thanks

PS I am not telling anyone (except all my mamma friends,) including my children. I want to surprise everyone (especially my co-workers) as they say I would never do this!!!

What can I do next?

This is too cool. I am actually planning on doing the same thing on that day as well. I contacted a family friend that did this a few months back and she sent me the link to Locks of Love
I am so nervous but I know its for a good cause and hair grows back so why not right
Congrats on doing this and rock the short do

I've donated mine twice to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. My salon didn't handle it though - I had to mail it myself. No big deal - they'll give you directions on what to do on their website. Enjoy your "new do" - you'll feel so much lighter!!

I agree that Locks of Love is one of the best and most reputable.

I don't think you can blame anyone for charging for wigs - there is a lot of labor and expense involved in making one. What they are doing is collecting real hair that is donated, rather than paying people to donate hair (a lot of hair in other countries is collected this way). I would seem to me that getting the hair for free would keep the costs down.

Many charities have programs that assist in keeping costs down for those who cannot afford the wigs. Maybe some insurance plans help. But "real hair" wigs look a lot better than synthetic ones, so you are helping nonetheless.

My nephew just went (2 days ago, my sister is still sad about it) to our local 'Fantastic Sam's' and cut off his long hair, well it is long when it is wet otherwise it is SO curly that it shrinks up and was just shoulder length but it was beautiful none the less :)

Anyway...he cut it off and they took 5 different pony-tails off his head to be donated to 'Locks of Love'.

If I were you I would just call around and ask?

~Don't be nervous! It's just hair...you can always grow it back ;)

I did locks of love and don't regret it. There's also wigs for kids. I recognize that my hair may have been sold vs used and as long as it all goes toward someone's wig in some way, I didn't care.

Locks of love, or pantene. I've done it twice, and may consider doing it again. Just be sure not to dole out too much shampoo when you wash your newly short hair-do.

Call some reputable salons in your area about Locks of Love. L.O.L website might also list salons?

My daughter did this when she was younger. Donated 14 inches and still had hair at her shoulder blades! Its a great thing to do!

I just donated to Wigs for Kids, which is a Michigan-based nonprofit organization that provides wigs for children suffering hair loss from chemotherapy, burns, etc. I had donated to Locks of Love in the past, but I liked the idea that I could help out Michigan kids. I even got a discount on my haircut for donating! Good luck!

I donated mine to Locks of Love but I don't know exactly what they do with the hair on the other end or if they charge their clients. I hadn't thought about that actually. I just went to Great Clips and they took care of the rest. They gave me my cut free since I donated.

What a sweet thing you are doing- my brother battled cancer and although he is a boy and wasn't bothered much by his baldness, I would see some of those bald little girls and that bit of dignity that is hair that we take for granted every day means so much to them. Their families are burdened so much financially with doctor bills that they can't afford the fancy wigs. :( So I'm so glad that people like you improve the quality of life for those people who have SO much on their plates already. :)

Quite a few salons will donate to Locks of Love, which supplies wigs for children. Check the place where you intend to get your hair cut - they may take care of the donation for you.

I just did this in January. The place I went to didn't do locks of love, but I called ahead and made arrangements and let everyone know that I wanted to keep the hair to send in.
I sent my hair in following their guidelines and 2 weeks after sending it in, I got an email saying the received it and my little certificate. Here is their website incase your salon doesn't participate.

p.s. Isn't it a great feeling to do something so wonderful and simple for some one else? I plan on doing this every 2-4 years (my hair grows FAST)

Locks of Love is who I donate to, I rubber band it and then take it to a salon ... they typically handle the rest.
