T.K.
I bought a couch and loveseat set that look like black leather from Conns. Came with a 5 yr warranty and I love it. They have held up well, wipe clean. Look nice.
I have a 3 yr old and cats (danged cats!) and need a sofa that won't bust the budget, but I must be able to put that sticky tape on it at least for a while to deter the cats. I also need to be able to spot clean because, well, kids. I'd like a couch that lasts more than a couple of years but less than $700. Am I dreaming?

I got my beautiful lazyboy couch of craigs lists last year, for the grand total of $100, It has two reclining ends, and the middle seat folds into a table. It was like new, I am not kidding. There are so many couches on craigs list
Nebraska Furniture but not sure where they are near you or if they are and they deliver but not sure what it would cost. I would look for a used one if you can find a good one...craigslist or somewhere like that. We have leather and non leather and our big dog won't touch the leather and just seemed to 'know' but I doubt cats would do that.
Harlem Furniture: We got both our microfiber couches from Harlem Furniture. They both are easy to spot clean and have held up well. I cannot believe how well the one in our living room as held up considering I had a family daycare up until 2 years ago. A little pricey but worth the money.
We got ours on sale at Macy's.
We've gotten all of our furniture there, actually. Great warranty, typically lasts awhile (we have cats, too), and I've always liked the delivery and selection.
La-z-boy.
And I DON'T recommend them. ;)
My couch and chairs were given to me by my mama. They were purchased when I was a year old and are 25 years old now. They are certainly *worn*, but considering their age they have held up amazingly (through six moves, two countries, three states, two sets of small children, myriad pets...you get the jist ;-)
Anyway.
I'd suggest looking for a leather couch on craigslist. Before we had our current furniture (leather) we went through a few fabric couches. We are *rough* on our stuff, so I buy things used but well made. I'd rather have a kitchen table that comes to us with memories, dings, and scuffs (they are going to get those things regardless), than a shinny new one that will last half the time for twice the price. I figure, if it's already lasted through many a decade, it will probably last us another few. Also, I just like the aesthetic and comfortably of much loved/worn furniture.
Big Lots is pretty afforable. But for us, we have MOR Furniture. Leather is best for our kiddos and cats
We bought our micro fiber couch from Ashley Furniture about three years ago. It's held up VERY well to our two kids who love to jump on it, roll on it, eat on it, etc. The covers (on the part you sit on) come off and we have washed them several times. I love how easy microfiber is to clean. it's a medium brown and was less than $700 I believe (don't remember exactly how much). It is a 2 piece sectional.
We've gotten good furniture from Value City Furniture in the past. Wish we would have gone there this last time, but instead we were swayed by the sale at Harlem furniture and it turned out to be not-so-great quality (our couch is totally sunken and deflated after only 2 years). Hopefully you can get a salesperson who will be honest with you about the quality and not just hungry for commission. Be direct, ask for exactly what you want and need. The fabric on the top is important for being able to clean it, but you also need to consider the strength of the frame so you know the couch can stand up to a preschooler for a few years. While our current couch is not the greatest for strength, the microfiber fabric is sturdy and super easy to just wipe clean. We have a dog that sheds, and at first it was a nightmare, but I found a squeegee thing at Bed Bath and Beyond called Pet Hair Magnet and it works like magic to get the embedded hair off.
Our family room sofa is from Ashley furniture. They make really good stuff & are very good with customer service & stand behind their products.
Our living room sofa is Pottery Barn, which, back when I was working for them, I was able to get for around your $700 budget due to their employee discount.
If I had cats AND a 3 yr old, I'd probably get one from Craigslist, and then buy a nice slipcover or 2 to get the most bang for the buck.
I picked mine up off the side of the road.
Another Craigslist vote. We have furnished our whole house that way in fact. It takes patience and time but we have gotten great deals. We bought a brand new Bassett couch and large chair with an 11' x 16' hand-woven wool rug for $500 since the lady was redecorating her home.
I do suggest leather but you will probably have to go used unless you find a great sale somewhere.
We have 3 sets.. 1 Natuzzi sofa $900, 1 set of Natuzzi sofa, loveseat, chair, 2 ottomans $3000, 1 custom made set from Leather Sofa Company with sofa and loveseat $5000.
We did get the $3000 set at Dilliards about 11 yrs ago and it has held up very well. It is our daily use set with 3 dogs.
Try Craigslist
This set is from Macy's and it's leather.
Leather has served us well.
I've been told leather is great for dogs. Cats? Not so much.
I know we had no trouble with leather and dogs.
Good leather is expensive though and I don't think you'd find a couch (new) for $700......
With a 3 year old and deranged cats? I'd probably go to the cheapest furniture store around, then I wouldn't feel "married to it", when I replace it in 3 or 4 years, kwim? We got some tables (they're long gone now) from Value City Furniture and they held up VERY well through the baby/toddler years.
Got a beautiful couch at Restore for $40. in like new condition and matches my living room perfectly. check it out before buying new. sometimes all they have is old stuff but sometimes you get lucky.
We found our couch from craigslist. Very nice, about $400. We did have to look through a whole slew of ugly couches (some were at least amusingly hideous) but it was worth it.
We got a used microsuede (sp?) couch set (Couch, loveseat, and chair with ottoman) for $550 on Craigslist. It's easy to clean with our steam cleaner.
I bought brand new couch and loveseat at the flea market for $700! But I'm in California.
