Where Can You Go Away for a Few Days with an Infant?

Hi Moms! My husband took off a few days to celebrate my 30th birthday and told me to go ahead and book a mini-vacation. Sounds great but our son is only 14 weeks old and we're new to Georgia. I'm looking for somewhere that is under a 4 hour drive and will be baby-friendly. Any ideas? So far it looks like we are having a "staycation." In case we do stay home, any local ideas?

What can I do next?

I agree with the other mom who said this is the best time to travel.

I would reccommend that you strap on a baby Bjorn so that you dont have to worry about being limited by a stroller(and you can hold hands with your hubby)!!

Helen is a good idea if you include Ruby Falls. Dahlonega has an outdoor rodeo june 26th weekend, so you can even stop there on the way up!

Hello,
Congratulations on your baby boy. I am a mother of 2 girls ages 10 and 7 and expecting my third daughter in August. I live in North Georgia as well and think that this would be a nice gettaway place. Visit http://www.chateauelan.com/ Tell me what you think. Enjoy!

Welcome to Georgia, and congrats on the new baby! We moved here from Michigan about 9 years ago and love it!

Some great places to visit are:
1. Destin or Panama City Florida (about 6-7 hours away) - but beautiful beach towns. You can get great condos for rent on a website called VRBO.com
2. Chattanooga, TN : Would be okay for you now, but even better when your son is a little older. Tons of family friendly stuff to do. Can stay in an actual train car at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. See the aquarium, Childrens museum, Ruby Falls, and visit the park down by the river. And it's only about 3 hours away.
3. Your husband and you may want to check out the new Lodge at Lake Lanier. They have redone it and it is very nice on the inside now. They have a pool, golf and water park. Lake Lanier is only about 30 minutes north of us.
4. Stone Mountain Park has an inn, and is very pretty. There is also plenty of stuff to do there. (45-60 minutes away)
5. I've never been but you could check out Chateau Elan winery/hotel/spa.
6. Savannah
7. Hilton Head

Good luck and enjoy!!

Welcome to the area. We are also from Connecticut and have been here for 19 years. This is home!

Have you checked out Callaway Gardens? Helen is a cute wee town with tons of small shops, some b&b's and nice restaurants with good german food. Dahlonega is another nice area, try the Smith House restaurant if you go there. I hope you have a wonderful birthday.

Panama City! I think it's 5 hrs but so worth the extra hour. Beautiful sandy white beach with a brand new shopping/dining/movie complex called "Pier Park".

Great for families.

Helen and Tybee are both great suggestions.
You also could stay in a hotel downtown and be a tourist. You could go to the aquarium, world of coke, high museum, zoo, hang out in centinneal olympic park. Of course you can drive into downtown if you stay home and still do these things.

Hey J.,

Just north of you up Georgia 400 is Helen Georgia. It is a very quaint little town. They have cabins and such to rent up there, on the river if you like. It is a replica of a german town. You can stroll the river, tube on the river, and just sight see. There is a lovely water fall (Ruby Falls), about a mile walk but worth it. There is also a huge park nearby, and many other things to see and do. We took our little ones and just strolled everywhere. We go every year, especially for Octoberfest

I would suggest Savannah or Tybee Island. Both are about 3 - 4 hours to get too. You can also look at some places in the panhandle but that's probably closer to 5 - 6 hours. I think there is something to be said for relaxing at home especially if the prospect of travelling any distance with an infant stresses you out. You can always plan day outings to Helen and some of the other more interesting places in north Georgia. Happy Birthday!

There is a little town in Southwest Georgia that ha sa TON of history.

It is called Warm Springs Georgia. President Franklin Roosevelt would come and visit this town because of the warm springs. He uses to swim in the pools to help his polio.

There are many things you can do there. You can tour the Little White House, which is still as it was the day FDR died. You can go to the Fish Hatchery and feed the fish. You can tour the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. and see what the people of Georgia came together for during the time of the epidemic of Polio.

It's about an hour and a half drive from Atlanta down 85 South to exit 41 I think, to Route 27 into Warm Springs. 12 miles from Warm Springs is Calaway Gardens. And there is the Roosevelt State Park too.

You can google all these on the Internet.

Hope this helps. :o)

Callaway Gardens in Georgia is only 2 hours away. There is a beautiful man made beach on a lake as well as trails to walk that would be easy to do with a stroller. They have a spa as well and it is a beautiful resort.

Congratulations on your little person :-)! I suggest a short get-a-way to the Georgia Mountains. Visit www.ticacabins.com and check out their great deals. The distance is less than two hours away from where you are. You can pick a mountain or lake view cabin. Many have hot tubs for your pleasure (while baby is sleeping). There are a few shops for light shopping and to pick up some groceries. I would recommend you take another couple to enhance the trip. Most cabins have a game room!

Good luck!

I know it doesn't seem like it right now, but this is the BEST age to travel with your son. They pack up easy, are easy to feed, and they stay where you put them!

We traveled to Boston when our son was 3 months old and thought it was so difficult. We had people tell us what I just told you, and we rolled our eyes. But looking back on it now, 9 years later, they were SO right. This is the best age.

Savannah and Charleston are both easy drives from Atlanta, both have lovely historic areas, and both have some access to a beach.

Have a great trip!
