Where Can I Buy Rice Milk for My 1 Year Old Daughter?

Hi Mommas! My 14 month old DD seems to not tolerate cow's milk well. She gets terrible rashes on her bottom as well as runny stools. Our pediatrician suggested giving her rice milk or soy milk. I chose rice milk that is fortified. Where can I buy rice milk? I went to a few grocery stores near me with no luck. I don't know if my DD is lactose intolerant yet or if it's a milk protein allergy. If you can tell me where you buy your rice milk I would appreciate it thanks!

What can I do next?

We have bought rice and soy milk at Meijer and Kroger. I think there's a brand called Rice Dream - it's not in the refrigerated section, maybe near their gluten free items? Look for a box, not a jug or bottle. As for soy, I have seen it in the refrigerated section in Meijer (there's even Meijer brand soy). The Kroger stores by me have the soy milk in their organic / vegetarian section; I would assume the rice milk is there also if they have it. I just remembered that Costco has vanilla soy milk.

Happy hunting!

You can also try Trader Joe's, if there is one near you. They keep plenty in stock, sweetened and unsweetened.

Rice Dreams can be bought in a Walmart Supercenter either in the aseptic packaging at the end of the cereal aisle or in a 1/2 gallon in the refrigerated milk section.

I believe Trader Joe's sells some brand of it. Our Giant Eagle grocery store sells it as well in their natural foods section. Aldi's once had it as a special buy. I don't think it sold well though because I was able to buy a case of it for 99 cents a carton (it has a long shelf life in the aseptic container until it is opened).

I buy rice milk at Fred Meyer, Safeway, Whole Foods. I've seen rice milk at every grocery store I've been in including a small one in a small town at the coast. Have you asked where they've shelved it? I usually find it in the same aisle as powdered and canned milk but not always. Sometimes there are just a few boxes which are easy to over look. It is packaged in an rectangular sani-box. It is not refrigerated.

Whole Foods has a wide selection and most grocery stores around here do too, but you have to look in the health food or natural food section of the store. I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Walmart as well. If neither of those are around, try a health food store or natural foods store.

Okay, I'm noticing not a lot of local people answering you, but I agree with all their answers and thought I'd offer my advice, too. :) LOCALLY (I'm not far from you in Bolingbrook!) I buy our rice milk at Meijer, it's also at Jewel. Refrigerated rice milk is "near" our milk section at Meijer, but closer to all the creams for coffee and such, and there's soy milk there, too. It's also at the BOTTOM of the whole refrigerated section- they really don't make it easy to find! Unrefrigerated boxes of rice milk (costs more!) are with the evaporated milks at Meijer- in the baking aisle, also towards the bottom. Go figure. :)

Jewel also carries rice milk- I think it's in their "healthy/organic" type of section. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are also places to look. You can even get whip cream made with rice milk for the holidays at Whole Foods! (just a fun random tidbit! LOL!)

Also, try cooking/baking with Fleischman's UNSALTED butter (green label on box) since it's made with soy and has no milk in it- it's just another way to reduce the milk intake for your daughter while you figure out what's going on. My son's allergic to milk, so I'm pretty familiar with all this! :) Let me know if you have other questions!

Try the health food section, if you haven't. It is not (usually) with regular milk. Rice milk is good, but I prefer Almond Milk! If allergies aren't a problem, try it. You will not be disappointed! :)

Don't drink soy milk. Soy mimicks estrogen in the body and can cause early puberty - and other problems - in children (girls AND boys)!

Costco has a great price - 12 quarts of organic rice milk for about $16 in my area. We get it there for my 2 year old. It is about half the price of a regular grocery store. It is organic and fortified. I do feel it is lacking in healthy fats, so I try to make sure she gets enough Omega-3 oils from fish and an Omega-3 supplement.

My daughter had similar issues with dairy products so we switched to soy then we had to swtich to rice after about two months on the soy. She had terrible tummy issues for 2 weeks before we realized she had developed a soy allergy.

If your daughter drinks a lot of rice milk, you may need to talk to your doctor about ways to increase her fiber intake. My kid had some issues with that until she got old enough to eat a lot of real food.

Did you ask the employees at your local stores? Not only are some things in odd places (and rice milk is often in the aseptic packaging and so therefore not refrigerated), BUT many stores will special order in things for you. As long as the company carries it, they can just tack it to their order. Not every location has everything, but as long as one of their stores does, it's usually pretty easy to get them to start delivering on a weekly basis.

As someone else mentioned... almond milk (if you don't have nut allergies) is also wonderful. It, too, tends to not be refrigerated.

You can also order it from Amazon.

In Seattle you can often buy rice milk & soy milk in gas stations... and it's in every grocery store (from Kroger/QFC/Safeway/Thriftway/etc to the WholeFoods/PCC/Trader Joes). In Peoria IL, it was much less available, but still in all the big chain stores.

Major chain stores allow you to make special requests if you know the brand and size of the item you want. I once ordered 6 dozen miniature bottles of coke. It can take up to 2 weeks to get in. Now they carry it fulltime.

I buy Rice Dream for my daughter. My two youngest girls are hooked on it and will not drink cows milk. You can buy it at Wal-Mart, in the refridgerator isle in a 1/2 gal. carton, or there is non-refridgerated Rice Dream in snack cookie isle with some juices. We get the vanilla flavored.
