When to Start BC After Having a Baby

Hi everyone-
I have been on pelvic rest since my 12th week of pregnancy. Prior to that I was so sick with morning, noon, and night sickness that there wasn't much going on. My husband has been super patient and kind during all of it. However, once I get my 6 week post delivery go ahead for sexual activity I am assuming he will be ready. I hate to start the pill then because doesn't it take a few weeks to start working. I know this is a doctor question and I will make sure to ask at my next appointment in a few weeks. However, what did you do? I would kind of like the pill to be in my system and ready to go by the 6 week mark. At least for his sake!!! Just looking for personal experiences.

What can I do next?

I had the iud put in at about 8 weeks post delivery. I have a lot of random bleeding which is annoying, but other than that it is a great method. Most women don't bleed either, so more than likely you would be ok with it. We waited until then as I was too nervous to get pregnant again.

I would recommend the mirena. If you are breastfeeding it does not effect your milk and it lasts for 5 years. You don't have to remember anything and you can have it removed at any time. It starts working immediately, my doctor suggested using a backup method until he checked it the next week to make sure it was in the proper position still. Other then that I loved having mine, I had it removed to have our 2nd child but once I have the baby I am going back with the mirena for sure.

If you are planning to breastfeed you will need to be careful what kind of BC you choose, most kinds will dry you up right away. I had a c/s so at my 12 wk c/u I was put on a pill that would still allow me to nurse.

I got a mirena inserted at my post partum appointment. Love it (3 years now) and it didn't interfere with breastfeeding.

You need to use BC right away if your have sex, you can get pregnant, even 6 weeks post partum and exclusively breastfeeding, even if you have not yet had a period yet.
Good luck!

Don't have to wait until your next appointment in a few weeks... just call your Doctor... and ask.

The Doctor, will recommend a B/C pill... that you can use.... and while breastfeeding if you are breastfeeding.

You just had a baby... go by your Doctor's recommendation about sex.
Your Husband will just need to wait.
You don't want any infections... to occur....

Ask your Doctor about the B/C pills... and how long to wait for effectiveness to kick in....

I believe -- though do not quote me -- that the ring is effective after 1 week instead of having to wait a month like the pill. Just a suggestion to try that. Please know that if you are breastfeeding, you have to do progesterin only pills (the mini-pill) and other progesterin only BC -- not those with estrogen. Things to think about. There are always condoms (oh fun) until something else kicks in.

Best wishes and congrats on your new baby!

My siser just had her first baby last week and with her discharge scripts from the hospital was a 90 day supply if bc pills to start at two weeks post partum. I had never heard if this. And she did not request them because her husband just deployed and won't be back for another 12 months. So I would ask your OB at your next appt about your options

I started back on the pill at weeks 6 but we used protection for the first month to make sure we were in the clear.
