I think my daughter started grabbing the spoon out of my hand when she was like 8 months old! haha She would grab it from me and would insist on trying to feed herself. So I just helped her the best I could and let her start learning.

Has your daughter tried taking the spoon from you or shown any interest in wanting to use the spoon herself? If she does, let her try it out! She will make a mess, but that's how they learn! :)

My daughter is very independent. When she shows interest in wanting to do something herself, I let her go for it! I think that's the best way to know when they are ready for things.

We always offered the utencils but never persuaded him to use them. He's 2 now and is quit good with a spoon because he watches us and wants to be like us. If he goes for the apple sauce with his fingers we don't say anything. As long as he's using utencils by 1st grade he's find.

I gave my kids the "kiddy" utencils as soon as they could hold them. They will teach them selfs how to do it by watching you eat with them!!

i've been letting my daughter "practice" with a spoon since she was about 4 months old. she is 17 months now and still hasn't completely mastered it yet. she can get a fork or spoon into to her mouth, but still has a hard time scooping any food with it. if i put the food on it for her and then hand it to her, she does really well. if she tries to scoop it up her self she just kind of pusehes it around. i think it takes till they are near 3 before they really get the hang of it.

This is work in progress. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she does well with a fork and/or spoon but still has little work to do. We offered her a fork/spoon w/ all her meals around one yr. We encouraged her to use the utensil to feed herself. She quickly pick it up. Good luck. Isn't it amazing to see your wonderful tiny baby take all these small steps towards independents. Have a great day.

Hi A.!
My daughter is 17 months old and still hasn't fully mastered the use of spoons or forks. She'll dig in the food and has a general idea of what to do but has a little while before I think she'll have it down pat. Just keep letting your little one play with little plastic spoons or forks even while you use one to feed them with. Giving them as much interaction with them as much as possible will help very much.
