When Is It Too Early to Give Infants Jarred Food?

I have a 4 month old daughter and I started her on cereal. She does very well with it and doesn't seem to have any problems eating it. Is it too early for me to give her jarred food? I have read about the possibility of food allergies and upset stomachs, but if she is taking cereal okay, shouldn't she take other food okay too? Also, if I can start her on it, when do I do it and how much do I start with.

I would say as soon as she is regularly eating cereal 3 times a day, then I would introduce baby food 1 fruit or veggie at a time.Let her try a new one every 3-4 days so you can tell if she has an allergy to anything. Start out with stage one for a couple weeks until she masters it. Good Luck!

Honestly she shouldn't be eating cereal yet. It's reccomended to wait until 6months of age to start solid food and solids aren't for nourishment as much as they are for fun in the first year of life. 90% of babies nutrients should come from breastmilk or formula, that doesn't leave much room for food.

Hi B.,
I am a R.N and a mom of 2. You should start food after cereal at about 4 months. You can start w/ either fruit or veggie. But stay on one for 3 feedings ( so it will depend how often you give it) to make sure there are no allergies. Have fun!

Solids shouldn't be started until around 6 months. But if you feel the need to give her cereal, buy organic. The other brands do not have any nutrients. They were lost during processing.

I started my children on cereal at 4-months and 1st stage fruits and veggies at 5 to 6-months. If you or your husband or family has any allergies, especially food, you should probably wait until your baby is older to be extra safe.

When I started other foods, I started with what I thought was the least palettable food - green beans - and then after a week of having that without a reaction, would try another veggie, slowing making our way through the veggies from more bitter to sweet (like carrots and sweet potatoes). Then we did the same with fruits. I know some people say it doesn't matter if you start with fruits or veggies or a combo, but I always wanted my kids to be happy with veggies before moving onto sweeter fruits. And to this day, my kids will gobble up their veggies before anything else on their plate.

i would start with a veggie and stay on one for a few day then add another one for a few days try to make it thur a few veggie before adding a fruit

Go for it, just start one thing at a time. My Dr. had me start with veggies, and give one for an entire week before starting another one. That way if there is a food allergy, you'll know what it is. They say to do fruit last so that they will eat veggies.

Yes, I'd say she is ready. I started my kids at that age on cereal, and soon after for food. I made my own food, but the jar food is fine too.

Start on veggies, sometimes if they taste the sweet stuff they won't want the veggies. Try one new food at a time, therefore if she has any reaction you will know what it is because that is all she's had. Also, add it to the cereal, because this is something she is fmiliar with. About 1/2 small jar or less. They have stages labeled on the jars, so begin with stage one. She'll let you know if she is ready for more
