My daughter was born Sept 16th. Will she be able to start kindergarten right before she turns 4 (for the new 4 year old kindergarten) or does she have to wait until she is almost 5????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you!!! I was just wondering. My DD is pretty big as it is. She is already wearing size 4 tops and 8 1/2 shoe and she is only 2 1/2. I guess I have a year to wait and see how she is doing before I need to worry.

Thanks for responding!!

I have a daughter that was born September 10th, we had to wait til she was almost 6 before she could enter kindergarten. My son will go through the same thing when it's his turn. It may help or it sometimes makes it hard for the kids. They maybe feel they know more than the other chidren cause they are older. My daughter likes to remind most people that she's older than most of her classmates. Well she did get a young classmate that skipped up to first grade in her class. Well, I hope my info helps you.

My daughter (dob 9/12) started 4 year old kindergarten this past fall...when she was only 3. She had to get tested to get in. You would have to call school district to get your child tested. She is having the test for K5 next week so she can start kindergarten in this fall right before she turns 5. I think the decision really depends on the child in question. If this were my son I wouldn't send him early.

I'm pretty sure she would have to wait because of cutoff. My son is also the same way. I started him in Head Start this year because he wasn't able to start kindergarten. Our Head Start program is available for children ages 3-5, so your daughter would be eligible.

I highly recommend waiting. I'm a first grade teacher and it makes a difference when kids are older and more mature. Keep in mind that when they test to get in early, they're looking for maturity, social skills, etc. For a few kids, it might not work to wait, but for the vast majority, I would go later rather than trying to go earlier.

My daughter's b-day is Sep. 5th and she had to wait (I think the 1st is the cut off). You can have them tested to go at 3 (almost 4), but I am sooooo happy that I waited! She is having the easiest time with school ( and yet not bored) and it's so fun to watch her learn because she isn't struggling with it, she's excited about it. She is also more comparable size wise so it isn't like if she gets bumped into on the playground she'll get knocked over because she's a peanut (does that make any sense?). I hope this helps!
