I was just wondering at what age you started a sippy cup with your baby? And which cups are the best?

Thanks everyone!

I started my son when he was 6 months using the Avent sippy/bottle trainer cup. I took the "plug" out and let him realize the formula was in there. He barely got anything because I held it for him and only let a tad bit come out. Then I put the "plug" back in and he started sucking on it like a bottle. Plus it's soft like a nipple. You can use the trainer cup as a sippy or a bottle too and it has the double handles. I also trained my nephew and taught my friend this same trick for her son. Both of them had the same result I did. At 12 months he went off the bottle with no problems at all!! Hope that helps some.

I tried my daughter around 9 months and she wouldn't even attempt to use it so I waited and tried again at 12 months and it went much better. My favorite that I used with my 8 year old son and now my daughter are playtex. I have never had leaking problems and they make a wonderful starter cup with handles on both sides making it easy for your baby to hold and then you buy the next step and they don't have the handles.

My daughter was/is excl. breastfed. I began to try and wean her to a bottle at 6months and she would not hear of it. So I gave up. At 7.5 months I threw all the bottles out and tried a sippy, the Nuby brand with the flexible 'spout'. She just chewed on them. So at about 8 months I was drinking out of a straw and saw she was very interested, I offered it to her and she took to it immediately. She only takes the sippy cups with the pop-up straws, Nuby makes them and Wal-mart makes an off brand of them. Like $6 for 2 insulated leak-proof cups. So she is now 8.5 months old and LOVES her sippy with the pop-up straw. You will just have to try and see what works best for you and your baby. Good Luck.

C.,

Hi I introduced the cup to my son at 6 months. He was off the bottle by 10 months. I suggest the nuby brand at first because they are soft like a bottle nipple.

I introduced both my boys to a sippy between 5-6 months. They were both bf'ed so the sippy cup was only for water or breastmilk, and later, juice. We used the soft-tip Nuby cups and they caught on to those pretty quickly. Around 9-10 months we switched them to straw cups (as soon as they figured out how to use a straw). Neither of my boys ever used a bottle though.

Hi C.,

I started the sippy cup with both boys around 6 months. It took several months for them to catch on.

Good luck! C.

Hi C.,

I introduced the sippy cup to my daughter when she was between 6 and 8 months old. She didn;t catch on at first but at least she got familiar with it. When she turned one and was done with formula, she went to a sippy cup full time. She had started using one for juices and water when she was about 9 months old.

I prefer the Gerber Spill-Proof cups, they change colors with the liquids inside. When we trained her with the sippy cup, we used the Playtex ones with handles.

Good luck! He'll catch on in plenty of time, no rush! :-)

In my opinion, skip the sippy cup!!!

I started my daughter directly on a straw and its been a life saver! Yes you'll have to supervise her drinking and I still do but all in all its been so much better! I don't have to take a cup with me anywhere anymore! We use them from time to time don't get me wrong, but she's learned so much better with a straw. And if it matters it helps wake their mouth up. If they have speach issues or you'd like to get a jump start on that, you can put shakes, yogart or even make them work really hard and put peanutbutter in it so they have to really use their little mouths. It serves so many purposes and makes life much easier!

Litterally when we leave the house, I take a diaper wipes and a snot rag and that's it! I have the smallest diaper bag out there and everyone wonders how. I don't have to carry a cup. I just pick her up something on the road if I need to or stick a bottle water in there for the both of us.

Its grose at first what they put back into the drink but they get better at that too... You may consider it! She's also learned that it is completely open and not like a sippy cup so she can't put it just anywhere and she can't tip it over. I still have to hold it for her 90% of the time but I'm tellin' ya its been a life saver so many times! Don't have to keep up with tops or lids or keep washing them because you'll never have enough... Try it and see what happens. I think its even better for their teeth/mouth too but I'm not positive on that so don't quote me... :o)

Its never too early either, just let them try it out and once you can get off the bottle even better! Its more like the bottle and having to suck to get it out anyways. the sippy cup is only like the bottle in that it has to be upside down. The sippy cup when you bite it it just falls out anyways... This way they learn not to tip their cup which is an ageless struggle with kiddos...

Just some thoughts, best of luck!!! ~T.~

I tried to introduce her to a sippy cup at 6 months although she would NOT HAVE IT! She wouldnt even hold her bottle...

So I gave up on the cup until she could hold her own bottle which was at 12 months. Now it is not that she couldnt hold the bottle it is that she wouldnt...she figured why hold it when Mama does such a good job.

At 12 months when she figured out how to hold the bottle. I tried many kinds of cups but we found out that the handles and the hard sippy nub was our prob. So after 12 cups later we found that Nubby's work the best. The soft nipple like texture was most like the bottle and the cup its self is more like a bottle so it has helped with the transition. Took one day for her to make the adjustment. The only thing is she hasnt figured out how to lift the cup for the milk so I just lean her back in her high chair or lay her on the ground.

Good luck.

I started giving it to her at 6 months. She had no clue what to do with it. She hated it for the next 6 months. On her 1st bd I threw out all the bottles and gave nothing but a cup. She had no problem with it when a bottle was not an option. Looking back, 6 months was probaby a little early to give it to her. She could not sit up alone yet.
