My 5 year old would rather do them himself - he hates having us do them. He uses a baby nail clipper rather than one for adults and we have to be there to supervise but he does ok.

Hi,

My daughter who is 10 just started doing it herself. It was her choice. My 8 year old daughter still likes me to do it. I think as long as they are shown how to do it without hurting themselves then they should at least be allowed to try.

This would be a great time for him to start doing it on his own. Start by having him clip the opposite of his dominant hand and then Mom can do the dominant hand until he gets better at it.

When he can safely do it - no special age.

I have one that cuts her own and has toe issues because of it since she was 8 but than i have another who is 8 and can't stand no one but pappa to cut them and the other 3 are too small. Most kids are too afraid and rather have an adult she should be proud to be able to do that for her. Instead of wanting he rto do it and have ingrown nails or something else wrong. My oldest is one who has always been a mor mature than the rest. Id say but 15. because buy than she will have started her period and be shaving. and or wearing make up

My 5 year old has done them herself also, but sometimes still asks me to do it. She does really good on her own.

My son is 12 and prefers that I do it for him. He finds the little clippers to be a bit, unwieldy? He will do it if he gets too impatient, but prefers when I do it, as I, obviously having many years of practice, do a neater job. :)

I have a 7 almost 8 year old girl, and the other day I heard clipping coming from the bathroom. I went in to see what she was doing and she was cutting her own toe nails. She did a good job and it didn't bother her. When I clip her nails she cries even if I am not touching her. So it depends on the child.
