What Were Your Saturday Morning Cartoons?

Saturday mornings are such a drag, honestly. I am tired, it's been a super busy week, and I just want to lay on the couch with a cup of coffee and watch Saturday morning cartoons with my kids. (We don't have cable, btw.)

So what do I find? Transformers. Yu-Gi-Oh (?). Doodlebops. I don't understand any of this stuff. I want something better.

We are in the habit of Netflix and Youtube, but I am tired of watching BusyTown Mysteries, LeapFrog, and LaLaLoopsy (OH MY GOD, WHY WHY WHY did I ever let my toddler watch that one...of course she loved it an now I'm stuck.)

I want to reproduce a Saturday morning from the 80s (with the assistance of YouTube.) Do you remember what you watched? All I can remember is PeeWee's Playhouse, which I'm not totally wild about, and I already tried...no full episodes. ;)

So What Happened?

Love Looney Tunes and Popeye...I think I have every available short on DVD. :) :) I think I enjoy these more than my kids! Also have every season of Flintstones on DVD, love it... :)

And oh yes, I can STILL sing the song...Jem, Jem is excitement...OOOHoohooh Jem, Jem is adventure...I have the cassette tape somewhere, and I still have my Jem doll. They couldn't wear Barbie clothes because they were Amazons.

I haven't tried Pound Puppies yet...I still have a Pound Puppy, but I don't think I ever watched it. Will give it a try!

Bug...LOVE LOVE LOVE Muppet Babies. Was my absolute favorite!! I have wanted for years to buy DVDs, but because of all the clips, it apparently would cost too much in rights payments so they won't do it. ;( I guess there are a few episodes on YouTube, but I wish there were more...I miss the Babies.

I also loved Garfield and Friends after school. ;) We have one of those on DVD, but I did notice they just added it to Netflix. Right now (well, now it's Sunday morning) my kids are watching BusyTown.

OOOOoooh, the Backyardigans...one of the few cartoons I absolutely love from this era. I actually like it so much I bought one of the soundtracks, and have been known to listen to it even when my children are not in the car. Float, flutter, flyyyyy.....

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions, ladies!!! I think I'm going to go check me out some Wacky Racers...forgot all about it. ;)

(And thank you all for being so kind and not making comments about TV. I am not a TV Nazi, as you can probably guess...we like TV, and within reason, I have no problem with marathons.) ;)

I'm definitely older than you, I was already an adult by the time PeeWee's Playhouse came along. Loved it! But as a kid, in the early 60s I remember watching Mighty Mouse, Felix the Cat, Tennesee Tuxedo, Quick Draw McGraw and Wally Gator. Later in the 60s, Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny, Jetsons, Top Cat, Magilla Gorilla and Underdog. They also had some really ghastly live-action stuff back then, like Banana Splits and HR Pufnstuf.

Well, I guess I'm going to be showing my age here but.... The Flintstones, Jetsons, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck - I miss those!!! Then when my Mom got up we'd spend Saturday afternoon together watching Charlie Chan movies!! Those were the good old days!!

I totally get what you're saying about the stuff that's on now. I don't have cable either and Saturday mornings are the pits!!!

And what the heck is "Green Screen Adventures"? That has got to be the worst show I've ever seen! I seriously cannot imagine how that show stays on the air!

Fun question!!

I started watching Sat morning cartoons/shows in the 60's.
Although I can't remember so much what was on Sat morning vs what was on after school.
We lived near Canada, so some of the shows were Canadian.
Captain Kangaroo
Mister Rogers Neighborhood
Sesame Street
I can just barely remember The Friendly Giant
Superman (Steve Reeves)
Batman (Adam West & Burt Ward)
Gilligan's Island
Lost in Space
The Flintstones
The Jetsons
Rocky and Bullwinkle
The Jackson Five (they had a cartoon)
Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids
Puff N Stuff
School House Rock
The Banana Splits Adventure Hour
The Monkees
The Partridge Family
The Brady Bunch
I Dream of Jeannie
Bewitched! (Elizabeth Montgomery)
Scooby Doo
The Archies
The Bugs Bunny Show (Overture, curtains, lights This is it, the night of nights)
Dr Snuggles
Thunder Cats
Garfield and Friends
Eek The Cat
The Tick

Jinkies! - I remember too much tv!
And I can remember a lot of the theme songs.
But I liked it so much better than what has been on the last decade or so.

I hear ya on the Saturday morning TV. We don't have cable or netflix so when I turn on the TV on Saturday morning for my girls it's all blah. It's not like when I was a kid, LOL. I used to LOOVE Smurfs! And the Jetsons, Looney tunes, Chipmunks, Punky Brewster, Sylvester and Tweety, The Roadrunner (I would root for the Coyote and my sister for the roadrunner)! I'm sure there are more, just can't think of them now.

We had a morning cartoon show on which would feature old Merry Melodies, Silly Symphonies kinds of cartoons, Popeye, Warner Brothers (Looney Toons), and more. I still enjoy those.

My generation's Saturday morning cartoons probably don't hold up as well- I remember Superfriends and Pink Panther especially. Strange, live-action shows too like HR Puffenstuff, Isis, some big giant guy who I can't remember, Wonder Woman, Battlestar Galactica and some other strange, strange stuff showed up on Saturday Mornings, if I remember correctly. (Didn't the Bay City Rollers have a kids show too?)

I feel very old now. :)

Nothing surpasses Bugs Bunny and the rest of Loony Tunes.

I unfortunately watched more than that as a kid, but I wouldn't bother with the rest these days.

I also like some PBS ones: Super Why, Grammar Girl and the Zulu Patrol. My daughter also loved Clifford.

I like the live action shows better than cartoons, Muy husband's favorites: Road runner, kinda upset me, poor guy was always hurt, Gilligan drove me nuts. My faves: anyone old enough to remember the boy with the magic flute and witchie poo?? or the boy who made friends with a (kinda cute) sea monster?? Anyone?

Back in the 80's we did this. :) Now no TV Saturday mornings. As an adult I don't watch TV, just no interest. My kids do though during the week after school and after activities, but they've been busy for over 8 hours so I feel it's OK.

Saturday mornings we have tons of activities, sports, dance, etc. that I know is better in the long run.

But I hear you about wanting to just be on the couch. I would love to read a book and put my feet up.

Looney Tunes (which I now own like a 10 disk set of), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the 80s series not the new one), which you can order off amazon for a fair price, and for after school, we LOVED the silly Count Duckula. That is hilarious, and we found that on ebay about 8 years ago...
If you get BOOM on your cable plan, they show all the old old stuff (Smurfs, Popeye, Hong Kong Phooie, etc)
