My daughter is turning one today and well, She doesnt seem to be doing as much as my 4 year old did at 1. My 4 year old could talk some and even walk. My youngest has no interest in walking and only says uh oh, momma, and dada. is this normal amd I freaking out over nothing? she does crawl, pull up and go up and down the stairs but still not walking. I didnt walk until I was 17 months old because my mother carried me but this is not the case with her lol.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We talked to her doctor and she said because she was born early that could be why she is a bit behind. she said nothing to worry about now tho! She crawls very fast and she said most babys who do that are happy with crawling and dont care to walk so that made me feel better! So we are just supposed to work with her and keep an eye on her. thanks everyone!

I wouldn't worry about it. She sounds like she's on the right track. My son was walking at 9 months and my daughter at 12 months, but my daughter started really talking at 18 months and my son didn't until after he was 2 and now constantly has something to say. They are two totally different children so they will hit their milestones at different times too.

I think your freaking out, and I only say that because I'm doing the same thing! My son is turning 1 and although he is walking he is not really talking the way my 3 year old did. He only says mama, dada and nana! I feel exactly the same way you do. Suddenly Im whipping out all the baby books and comparing! The best advice I can give you is what someone just told me- Relax and enjoy it, babyhood goes by way to quickly to worry over the little things. No two are alike so there is no point in comparing. It sounds like she is doing just fine for her age

Relax. I have four children and they all progressed at different rates. When my second child was one year old his older brother was 3 years old. He didn't have to talk. My 3 year old did all the talking for him. The other thing that happens is that you are a better parent now. He doesn't have to talk because you already know what he needs. Some children are 18 months old before they walk. My children that grew up to be good athletes did all the large motor skill activities earlier.

First children tend to progress more rapidly than second children. At your one year old well child check up ask the doctor to give you a chart with the age that children start doing each new developmental activity. That should help ease your worries. Enjoy your little ones!

Hey E.!
I dont think you have anything to worry about.I am a speech therapist and in my experience, most children have one big developmental focus at a time at that stage. It sounds like gross motor skills are your daughter's primary focus currently and speech will begin to improve with her improved walking skills. Some physical therapists that I have worked with in the past say that it can be considered normal for a child not to walk until they are b/t 15 and 18 months. Watch the 4yr old and make sure they are not talking "for" your little one. :)
Hope this eases your mind. Feel free to check out some developmental milestone links at my personal website and good luck!

My doctor told me that 2-4 words was normal for 1 year. My son did not start walking until 13 months. A friend of ours has a daughter the same age and she showed no interest in walking until long after 1 year. Babies develop differently and it sounds like your daughter is developing on a normal schedule.

If your ped isnt overly concerned i wouldnt be eihter. Some kids take a lil more time then others. Just work with her ont he walking. My son who is now 6 and incredibly smart didnt start saying more then momma and dada til he was almost 2. So i wouldnt too much about that either. But if your still worried talk to your ped to see what they think. For now just enjoy her. and encourage her im sure shell take off in no time.

my daughter who is now almost five, was not carried around. she still did not walk until almost eighteen months. she was fine in every other way. her doctor said that it was just because she was a very fast crawler, and did not have any trouble getting places without walking. this made her less ready to put in the effort to walk. my son is almost 10 months and has no words other than mommy and daddy. so i think that your daughter is probably fine, and right on track. remember that all kids are different, and comparing your oldest and youngest will only make you a nervous and worried mess.

I think this is all normal. Babies all progress at different rates and it sounds like her next step is walking. My son was walking at 11 mos, but really didn't start talking much until 17 mos old. Now, I can't shut him up! lol

E., DON'T WORRY!! My son who is the first just turned one and is walking, but will not even say Mama on a regular bases. I think maybe one a week!!! When we went for his one year when they were asking about "milestone" they asked if he was saying about 4 words that at least I could understand. To be honest he would rather walk and say "moo" than anything else!! :) I am sure you daughter is just fine!

sounds like your daughter is right on track. if she wasn't saying anything and not mobile at all, then there would be cause for concern. is she a large baby...bigger babies take longer to walk becasue they are top heavy and thier legs take a little longer to get used to holding up the weight. also i've heard that 2nd children take longer to talk because alot of times, the older child will speak for them.
