What Vitamins Should I Give My Kids?

My Dr. does not have a preference for which vitamins I should give my kids. So far, I just find whatever gummy vitamins I think they'll eat, but have heard lately how bad these are for their teeth and I know there are a lot of extra additives to make them gummy that my kids just don't need. Can anyone recommend a healthier alternative that actually tastes good that my kids can chew? And where can I get it. I live in the South Bay, kids are four and two.

What can I do next?

My daughters pediatrians recommends the Flinstones Complete or the My First Flinstones for the younger one and they are the chewable ones. My daughter has been taking them since she was two and loves them. You can get them almost anywhere (Target, Wal Mart, Grocery Store, etc..)

Unfortunately, it's not possible to get all of the nutrients from our diet anymore, so you do need to supplement. I would advise not to buy vitamins over the counter though. Consumerlabs.com is doing ongoing testing of children's vitmains and finding contaminants like lead and mercury in commonly used brands sold OTC. Try one of the moms who sells direct from their company. My company produces the number one rated children's supplement in North America - it contains the optimal levels of vitamins & minerals along with phytonutrients from frutis and berries, with no sugar or artifical sweeteners. I'd be happy to tell you more about it, and I can also send you a comparison chart of the top brands.

Hi Cynthia,
A lot of people (myself included until recently) are not clear about the way our bodies absorb nutrients. Most doctors actually learn very little about nutrition in med. school.

OUR BODIES CANNOT ABSORB 100% OF WHAT IT NEEDS IN ONE GO, SO WE NEED TO BE TAKING OUR VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS TWICE A DAY.

My husband, my kids (ages 1 and 3), and myself all take our vitamins from a wellness company where they have fructose compounding in the vitamins that allows for the nutrients to be absorbed at the cellular level.
We take them TWICE a day (AM and PM- we do breakfast and then after dinner before bed, but as long as you leave at least 6 hours in between, then you are good- so even those of you taking a one a day- until you get higher quality vitamins and supplements in your home, TAKE THEM TWICE A DAY for your body to at least be getting a tiny bit from the money you spent on them).
The vitamins from our wellness company are much higher quality than what you can typically buy in the store, and the price is very affordable.
The time and ease of shopping with this company is awesome (we order our needs on line and it all gets shipped to our front door and they also give us free products every month for being loyal customers of theirs).
Please feel free to let me know if you'd like to learn more about them.
They are a GREEN company and they actually have lots more to offer than just the nutritional line, but it's the top selling line with them because of the research and technology and patented formula's!
:)
My kids LOVE the vitamins and they are chewable.
Hope that helps.
(The reason they don't sell their products in stores is so that they don't have to spend their money on advertising and all the middle men involved with doing business that way. They use that money to research higher quality ingredients and products to give us healthier products AND they operate totally on word of mouth referral so that they CAN give us the best of the best products! They ONLY sell their products to their customers, you can't get these products anywhere else...........it's like an exclusive club! Our very own country club of stores!)
;)

I noticed some parents recommending Flinstone vitamins. Flinstone vitamins contain artificial coloring. Artificial coloring contains lead, mercury and arsenic. Go to www.bluedominoes.com to learn more about lead poisoning. Go to wholefoods nutritional department and speak with them about children's vitamins.

Me pediatrician recommended Flinstone Vitamins. I've been happy giving those to my kids. They come in regular sizes for 4 years and older and they come in toddler size for under 4 years old. Although they're hard, my kids have never had any problems chewing them.

Another question is, do your kids need vitamins? I have gone back and forth on this question and discussed it with my doctor as well. At this point our doctor's opinion is that if our child is eating well (protein, veggies, fruit and complex carbs) then she does not need vitamins. Our child does not eat anything consistently but if I add it all up at the end of the week it combines to be a decent diet. So, we have opted not to go the route of vitamins. Just another thought for you to consider! :)

I give my daughter a chocolate-flavored powdered whole food supplement that we get at (surprise surprise) Whole Foods. She has recently stopped eating vegetables after LOVING them, much to my chagrin, and I had to find something to give her the nutrients she wasn't getting.

From what I understand, whole food supplements are generally better sources of vitamins and minerals than typical "vitamins".

You could try Shaklee's natural chewable multis. Some kids don't care for the sorbitol (which is a natural sweetener), but you could try a bottle and see if they like them. Shaklee also makes really good-tasting chewable C's and calcium/magnesium supplements. Also they're organic protein shakes for kids are delicious. You would buy online and they'd be delivered by UPS and you could ask me any questions at any time.

If your children eat a wide variety of fruits, veggies and proteins - there is no need for anything synthetic.
Natural is always best.

I used to give my kids Juice Plus, these great whole fruit & vegetable gummy vitamins. My rep moved out of town and I will be on the hunt for a new one. I'm sure that one of the Mama Source Moms is a rep.

Hi Everyone - Juice Plus is an awesome vitamin - as it is a whole food supplement (that means..real fruits & veggies) - it is a natural source of nutrition & studies are finding amazing health benefits to children (and adults) who choose it! Check out www.susie4health.com or call ###-###-#### for more info - it is really an awesome way to go & it will help relieve anxiety if you have a little one that is a picky eater - they can get full fruit & veggie servies from the supplements! It's worth a look!!!
